Should the Sky Fall : A Hurt/Comfort Second Chance MM Romance (Who We Are Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 901 ratings

After a terrible accident, most people would spend day and night at their husband's side, praying for him to pull through. To wake up.

Dawson isn't most people. Then again, it's not unreasonable to want to be rid of the man who's made your life a living hell for the past six years.

Except when Cal wakes up, he's nothing like the man who'd put bruise after bruise on Dawson's body and shattered his soul. Cal has no memory of any of that. He remembers nothing, including his own name.

Dawson should walk away. Cal might not remember, but Dawson does. He remembers everything. By all rights, he should run and never look back.

What he absolutely
should not do is start falling for him, for this man who wears his husband's face but feels like home, not like someone Dawson should fear.

It might make him the most horrible person on the planet, but if Dawson had one wish, he'd wish for Cal's memories to never come back.

132k words/450 pages

Tropes: paranormal themes, reaper in love, hurt/comfort, second chance, body takeover, there's a dog, sappy moments

trigger warnings, please refer to the book sample or the author's website at https://amithiaraine.com/should-the-sky-fall. They're quite a few and I felt that they needed a bit of explaining.

I don't even know what to say about this book.
I guess I'll start with, please heed the trigger warnings. There is a scene of SA of an MC (NOT between the MCs) in chapter 2. It's on-page, and while more about the reaction than the mechanics of it, you can skim or skip this part and still enjoy the story. The beginning features domestic abuse, both verbal and physical. Please read with care. This book is in no way condoning such behavior.

All of that aside, this is an a-ma-zing story of hurt/comfort, and the power of trust. The faith it takes to just be vulnerable in any relationship, knowing the other person could hurt you, versus knowing they have, is incredible.
Dawson is so sweet and giving. He's finally ready to take his power back, just in time for his world to flip. Now his decisions are even harder, and suddenly the loving life he always wanted seems possible. The people in his life who care about him don't understand, how could they, but ultimately it is HIS life and he must choose for himself.
"Cal" our beloved protector, wants nothing so much as to keep the light of Dawson's soul bright. He's not allowed to interfere before the time is right (according to whom?), and can only watch in helpless horror as Dawson struggles. While he hopes the transference will work, he does not anticipate a loss of both Caledon's memories (a good thing, to be sure) and his own.
Together, Dawson and Cal discover the power of love and trust, and loving someone for exactly who they are.
This is a slow burn, and everything that occurs between Dawson and Cal 2.0 is fully consensual.
Also, while it does not feature prominently outside of the beginning and end, there are supernatural/paranormal elements to this world. Perhaps this will be expanded upon in the next book, Ellis and Gabe!! (And hopefully Ash, down the road).
I highly, highly recommend this book. This is all the feels and more. ❤ Can't wait for more from this author, and especially in this world.

This was a very interesting read and pulled at my emotions from multiple directions.

On one hand you feel for Dawson, who has gone through Hell and back and suffered through things that no person should ever have to endure. Then his ‘husband’ suffers an accident and wakes up a completely different person and he thinks he’s falling in love with the same person. What an absolute mind game. Stepping outside the morality of this issue in real life here, the emotional strength this signifies from Dawson to me is immense.

On the other side is Cal who we know is not that slimeball Caledon yet has to jump through the hurdles because he’s wearing his meat suit. And he does eventually win everyone over. But the entire time I was screaming in my head ‘it wasn’t you!’ Or ‘it wasn’t him!’ When the truth is finally revealed it’s no wonder Dawson takes it badly, that’s hard to explain at family reunions.

This is an extremely fascinating paranormal (lite?) take on soulmates and start to this series. I appreciated (however frustrating it became) that the author took everything as slowly as it was, because not only were these two people basically strangers, but again Dawson thought he was falling in love with his physically and sexually abusive husband and had to come to terms with that on top of teaching this new man how to handle the world and get to know him. This was not going to be a quick read.

Absolutely fantastic. Cannot wait to read about Ellis being ‘definitely straight’ and meeting Gabe!

    💙🖤 Book Review 🖤💙

    Title: Should the Sky Fall
    Author: Amithia Raine
    Pages: 451

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    ~
Dawson is just about ready to leave his broken marriage and the abuse he's been living with the last six years... When he gets the call.

The call that his husband was in a car accident.

And when Cal wakes up a completely different person to who he used to be... Well Dawson doesn't know what to do.
    ~

Guys! This book was addictive! Once I started it, I literally couldn't put it down. Dawson and Cal's story, that mixes contemporary romance with paranormal elements, drew me in and I was on the edge of my seat hoping for their happily ever after.

Dawson is so strong in his kindness and so brave in his honestly. I loved him from the first page and surprisingly until the very end. His type of character can sometimes border on annoying and yet he never did. I loved that he was willing to give their love a different path than what they were on.

Cal... Oh my goodness (and please don't judge, read the book and you'll understand) I loved the new him. He was golden retriever and cinnamon roll all in one. Focused on one thing and one thing only - making Dawson happy. And I loved his journey, trying to remember who he was and finding who he could be.

They're journey together had me smiling so much my jaw ached, while filled with tender hearted and difficult moments, especially Dawson. I wanted to tuck the both of them into a big big bed with fluffy blankets where they could never be hurt.

It's written in dual POV, so you get to experience both characters going through this story.

This was my first books by this author and you can be sure I'll be taking a look at their back log. Also I have a sneaky suspicion we get a book 2 is this series and I CANNOT WAIT!

~ A definite recommend if you love Meet Joe Black, reapers and paranormal love stories. ~

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly stunning debut book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 8, 2024
Having read the blurb, I took a chance and bought this book. I admit I wasn't sure whether I would enjoy it at first, with Dawson locked into an abusive relationship, but following Cals accident, I was completely hooked, half of me not wanting to race through the book and the other half unable to resist finding out what happens next. Although it appears that this is Amithia's first book, I am almost unable to believe it. This is a book where the writing flows smoothly and with a competence that many more experienced writers must envy. The plot is very different from other books of the genre, but works well. I have already ordered her next book and can't wait to start reading it.

Wow, I was really surprised at how good this one was. I loved the characters and very quickly became invested in the story. It has just a touch of paranormal and it really made the story work. The HEA was satisfying. I highly recommend this read.

A new to me author and I was so incredibly surprised with how much I LOVED this story.
Listen, as an Australian I have to be a little upset that she didn’t want to use Australian English in an Australian setting but luckily the story and the writing more than made up for it haha.
    Don’t miss this book!!

If you like a full length story with characters that will feel real to you and you will love than go buy this book!
The story is incredibly well developed and you will care about the MC and see them grow. It doesn't feel rushed.
It's not the usual love story. It's incredibly romantic.
Fair warning: it does have Triggers...it's not an easy reading. It's not an heavy book, even if it treats heavy subjects.
First of all ...sooo much feelings! You'll be so pissed at first and than sad and than You'll find yourself sucked in the story. I couldn't put it down.
It also has really funny second characters ( aaand now I'm gonna look if they have their own book! Bye bye money)
And if you like spicy with a possessive but sweet mc...yep go buy!
