Silver-Tongued Devil (Rough Riders Book 17) Kindle Edition
Historical romance set in the Wild West from NY Times Bestselling author Lorelei James.
Hot cowboy twins, a not-so-prim schoolteacher, and a madam with a heart of gold…the West doesn’t get much wilder than this.
Wyoming – 1897. Silas McKay earns his reputation as a brawling card sharp who’s short on cash but long on charm. As soon as he claps eyes on Dinah Thompson, the pretty new schoolteacher, he’s smitten.
Dinah relocated to small town Wyoming to become a self-reliant woman, not to daydream about a persistent blue-eyed rancher. But Silas’s promises of home and hearth sway Dinah to take a chance on him.
While Jonas McKay is pleased by his twin’s happiness, his contentment stems from his deputy sheriff’s job. His life would be perfect if his longtime love Madame Ruby, local brothel owner, allowed him to publicly acknowledge their relationship. But Ruby refuses to destroy the upstanding deputy’s reputation, even at the expense of her own heart.
When the McKays’ long-standing rivalry with Zeke West puts Dinah, Silas and Jonas in danger, each one is forced to make difficult decisions that will forever change their lives and legacies.

Madame Ruby Red. His Ruby.
Jonas watched slack-jawed as Ruby undressed. He let a warm, giddy rush of possessiveness flow through him. No one else got to see her like this, relaxed and carefree. Shadows and sunlight dappling her exposed flesh, a breeze tousling her hair and a secret smile curling her lips.
"Are you just gonna stand there staring at me, Deputy?"
"Can't blame a man for bein' addle-brained with a beautiful half-nekkid woman spread out before him in a private feast."
She laughed. "I love that sweet-talking almost as much as your dirty talk."
SILVER TONGUED DEVIL is for readers who love:
- Historical romance set in the Wild West
- Dual storylines with identical twins
- McKay/West feud origin story
- Hot love scenes between the madam and the sheriff
- Slow burn love scenes between the schoolteacher and the rancher
- Angst, heartbreak and a dastardly villain

About the author
“Update your bio,” they said, “Make it fun and quirky.”
I’m relieved they didn’t request a kinky bio since I write erotic romance. So here’s a new bio for a writer who’s been published for TWO DAMN DECADES.
~Lorelei James knows too much about pop culture & little about math/science-y stuff which she blames on her GenX upbringing. She’s written a bunch of books in the Rough Riders series, the Blacktop Cowboys® series, the Mastered series, the Need You series, the Want You series, & several stand-alones. Many of those titles have hit the New York Times, USA Today & Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. Her books have won the Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award, the CAPA Award. In 2016, RT Book Reviews presented her with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Erotic Romance.
Cool, right? But Lorelei also has a secret identity (technically it’s not a secret since it's her real name)~as Lori Armstrong, she writes dark, gritty mysteries. She’s been nominated for 5 Shamus Awards—won 2—for books in her Julie Collins series, Mercy Gunderson series & a short story, earned nominations for a High Plains Book Award, won a Willa Cather Literary Award. Lorelei lives in western South Dakota with her husband, their corgi Copper, more craft projects than she’ll ever finish, more books than she’ll ever read & all those pesky fictional characters residing in her head.

Silas McKay was living the single cowboy life to the fullest. He’s a charmer with the ladies, knows his way around the ranch with his eyes closed and the luck of the draw seems to always be on his side. Silas is a smart man and is trying to build something lasting. Being on his ranch was his favorite place to be until he sets his eye on the new teacher, Ms. Dinah Thompson. I loved how this big strong rancher became putty anytime he was near her.
Dinah Thompson it’s a woman ahead of her time. Moving to rural Wyoming was a step for her to become independent and self-reliant. She didn’t need anyone to take care of her, she was perfectly capable of taking care of herself. As a teacher and a nurse, her doors are opened and the possibilities endless. That is until a silver tongued cowboy makes his intentions known.
Oh how I loved Dinah and Silas together. Their relationship was hard but that didn’t stop them. The distance that separated them made the time they spent together treasured and special. Silas is a true romantic and I loved how he asked Dinah to read to him. Dinah has this sassy streak that allows her to put Silas right in his place. I also love that she wasn’t afraid to get down and dirty and do what needed to be done whether it be on the ranch, with a patient or for one of her students.
And wait, we are not done yet.
Jonas McKay is the town Deputy and twin brother to Silas. A man whom everyone believes is married to his job. The reality is the job keeps him close to his brother and the one his heart wants most. Ruby Redmond is the madam of the Miss Ruby Red’s Boarding House. Knowing what people think of her, and loving Jonas as she does, Rudy stands the higher ground to avoid any harm her reputation could do to Jonas.
So so loved the pairing of the law and the harlot. Jonas and Rudy were intense and their chemistry was explosive. Maybe not a conventional pairing but one that will stand the test of time.
Ms. James has given readers something truly special in the pages Silver-Tongued Devil. We get not just one but two beautiful and intense love stories. We see a family legacy at its infancy stage. We get unlikely friendships and what it truly means to be family. To see what the truth of brotherhood means. I laughed and cried. Felt the happiness and loss right along with our couples. Silver-Tongued Devil is a beautiful written historical romance that will make you feel like you have been transported to another time. Well done Ms. James, well done.
Reviewer’s note:
A few years back a dear friend introduce me to Ms. James’ Rough Rider series. I was not a fan of cowboy romance. I was told I would not be disappointed. I would also like to note that I’m not a fan of historical romance at all. So with that being said, Ms. James not only got me to like her brand of Cowboy romance, she got me to love a historical as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2020Lorelei James is a master storyteller!
I'll start by saying that Silver Tongued Devil is the best book I read in 2020 and I don't even read historical romance!
Lorelei James is a master storyteller and Silver Tongued Devil is one of her best books.
I just couldn't put my Kindle down- I took a day off from work to read the book nonstop.
Silas McKay first love was ranching until he meets the news school teacher, Dinah Thompson and can't take his eyes off her and he just know they are meant to be together.
Dinah moved to rural Wyoming to teach and become a self-reliant woman but after meeting Silas her plans soon change and she allow Silas to court her.
Zeke West is Silas enemy and he is trying to do everything he can to make Silas' life living hell including threating Dinah and his twin brother Jonas.
Dinah and Silsas' love story is amazing, so many emotions and passion.
I love Dinah – she is such a strong heroine and I just loved to read how she handle Silas and how she wasn't afraid to speak her mind.
Silas is a misunderstood hero, his feeling run so much deeper than it first seems and is willing to do anything for Dinah. He may not have a lot of money but he's trying to make Dinah happy with small romantic gestures.
I don't want to give much of the plot away but I will say you get 2 love stories in this amazing book, both Silas and Jonas.
While reading Silver Tongued Devil I felt like I was in the West back in 1897 , I felt so connected to all the characters I just couldn't read fast enough to learn what happened but also I enjoyed reading it so much I just didn't want it to end.
This is a standalone historical romance - a prequel to the McKay family saga- you can read and enjoy the book as a standalone.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2020Lorelei James writes stories that are worth waiting 123 years to read. As a card carrying member of the McKay men fan club, Jonas and Silas McKay would be damn proud of their lineage. This story answers so many questions I never knew I had until they were answered. I would challenge anyone to find a more seamlessly written set of 17 books. This book is #17 but could easily be read as the very first one. In fact, I would suggest reading this book before reading the others to see if you can find pieces of Jonas and Silas in each of the other McKays. My heart ached for Jonas and Silas during their conflict and subsequent resolution. Despite the heart break that ensues there is also freedom that we can celebrate. There are a couple of modern-day McKay men that have stolen my heart and are the plumb line by which all other male leads are judged. I was pulled into this story from the very first page like the Blonde Tornado herself had swept across the pages. Lorelei writes in such a way that reader cannot help but find bits and pieces of his/herself in the characters. I knew this book was going to be stellar. I wasn't fully prepared for the leap through the time machine. The details of life in Wyoming during the late 19th century fascinated me and made me appreciate the research and time it took to accurately paint the perfect picture for her readers. In her acknowledgements, Lorelei states that she's had this story plotted for some time. What the reader doesn't realize until he/she has read all of the series is bits and pieces of Jonas and Silas show up in every book and in each character. From the restless of one brother to the surety of another. From living in one twin's shadow to wanting to make a name for himself outside of that shadow. It will be very long time before this story loosens its hold on me if it ever does. This is an outstanding read worthy of your time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just fabulous
Another fabulous book from Ms James.... Looking back to where it all began in the McKay family. No spoilers here, but if you’ve read Rough Riders Series, you really need to read this too. If you haven’t, then what you waiting for?? Curl up with your favourite snacks or a drink and enter the world of the McKay family. You won’t regret it..... promise!
