The Ill-Fated Sisters of Mableton
A sharp-tongued reunion. A past too painful to forget. A love that lingers through time.
A heartwarming and sharp-witted novel about estranged sisters, long-buried secrets, and the bonds that refuse to break-no matter how much time has passed.
After nearly seventy years of silence, Myrtle Pontier appears-uninvited and unexplained-on the doorstep of her older sister, Agnes Haskell.
- No word. No warning. No apology.
- Just a battered suitcase and the weight of a shared past left unspoken.
But Agnes isn't welcoming her with open arms. Not after the night Myrtle vanished. Not after the heartbreak she left behind.
As the sisters awkwardly reconnect, what begins as a barbed exchange of grievances quickly spirals into a reckoning. Secrets resurface. Old wounds reopen. And the lives they've carefully built crack beneath the pressure of unfinished business.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024This book was unlike any of K.C. Mitchell's other books, in that the estranged relationship between the 2 sisters culminates to them becoming strangers. They are 'forced' to live together and that's when they open the can of worms, which causes their conflicts. A Great Read about honesty, vulnerability, and forgiveness. Laugh and cry at the same time with this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2024K. C. Mitchell, the author, was recently featured in the New York Weekly as a Best Seller on Amazon. She was lauded for her outstanding ability to write about ordinary people and their precarious circumstances and then develop them into champions who rise to overcome their obstacles. Over the past few years, I have read five or six of Mitchell’s novels (spanning multiple genres) and all are remarkable because of their complex characters and interesting plots.
The Ill-fated Sisters of Mableton did not disappoint - I tremendously enjoyed it on many levels. Before I began reading, I was thinking about how much I wished I had a sister - however, after they started bickering, I thought maybe not so much (LOL)! However, things turned out better after they confronted their pasts and found trust and forgiveness!
The story was heart-wrenching and heart-warming at the same time as two estranged sisters unexpectedly come together to heal agonizing wounds. I loved how Mitchell used humor throughout the book to break the tension between the characters and even chuckled over it! I also found that I was highlighting Mitchell’s many pearls of wisdom, “pray for those that hurt you and pray for yourself to forgive!” Such great lessons for life!
To me the book was not a page turner (like a mystery) but one that kept you emotionally invested. All the characters were well developed and relatable. Each was also flawed and a little complex, adding authenticity to the story. I just wanted to shake them at some point!
The pacing was perfect with a balance between frustration and poignant moments of reflection (words of wisdom). The author’s touching insights demonstrate how people hide their past and emotions, which makes them vulnerable and bitter. The story itself was very beautifully written and the characters came alive and were realistic. I felt like I knew them, especially the sisters, Myrtle and Agnes! The reader becomes reluctant to finish it wanting to stay with the characters!
Lastly, the ending of the book was very satisfying and it is not a story I will soon forget – like all of Mitchell’s novels! I highly recommend this book! And, looking back, I still think having a sister would be the best thing ever!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024This latest addition to my library of K C Mitchell books did not disappoint. Although quite different from her other books, in that it was both humorous and heart-wrenching, I still found myself unable to put it down easily. I could relate to so many of the stories of these two older women both in the present as well as their past. A lifetime of secrets comes to an end when the two senior sisters find themselves living together once again. Being open and honest about their lives for the first time opens the doors to a struggle at first, but later teaches the reader the importance of forgiving and moving on from the hurts and disappointment of the past. Many lessons can be learned from this heart warming story of sisterly love amidst misunderstanding and disappointment.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2024This book was a fast read. It didn’t wander all over the place like some stories might. It was devoted to the entertaining tale of two aging sisters with a history of problems that were.. after all ..surmountable after facing them together. It caused me to consider my own relationships.
