Should Our Hearts Catch Fire: A Grumpy/Sunshine Bi-awakening MM Romance (Who We Are Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 308 ratings

Should Our Hearts Catch Fire is book 2 in Who We Are series and starts off halfway through book 1. It's a contemporary story with a paranormal subplot (Gabe has empathic abilities), low-ish on angst, high on feels and trying really hard to be funny. There is, of course, a HEA!

Tropes: bisexual awakening, grumpy/sunshine, an empath MC, medium-to-slow burn, found family, mutual pining

105k words/370 pages

BLURB

Ellis has been looking for something for as long as he can remember. It was never important, though. There’ve been expectations and rules laid out for him since he was born.

It doesn't matter his dad isn't here anymore to remind him how inadequate he is compared to his big brother; not as smart, not as driven, not as talented. Never good enough. The only thing he’s good for is being a cash-cow and ironing out other people’s messes—like having to take over the family business because brother dear somehow managed to lose all his memories. Just great.

But that’s his life.

At least until the day he wanders into a local café with a stupid name and the world's strangest barista. Gabriel is a force of nature, confusing as hell and, worst of all, makes Ellis feel things he has no business feeling.

Ellis swears to never go back, but something about that place keeps drawing him in. Every time he steps in there, he feels more like himself. A little more alive and far less lost.

He has no idea what he's looking for, but sometimes, when he's in Gabriel’s shop, it feels like he might have found it.

I'm your regular anti-social weirdo who loves to escape reality by getting way too invested in the lives of fictional dudes, be it through reading or writing.

I was born and raised in the Czech Republic. In 2019, I ran away to Brisbane, Australia, where I made camp and have no plans on changing that. In real life, I'm a physiotherapist, and a coffee and sugar addict. In my other (way more interesting) life, I'm a sap who can't survive without two (or more) boys in love and a proper happily ever after.

This is the second book in the Who We Are series. It could be read as a standalone but it overlaps a bit with book one so it would make sense to read that one first. That book is really good too.

Ellis is grumpy, overworked, stressed, and just lonely. Gabriel (I love how Ellis calls him his full name) is so happy and positive. He is an empathy and can feel others feelings and project his on others to brightening them up. So opposites for sure.

Gabe is perfect for Ellis! He calms Ellis and makes him feel special, without even using his "mojo" on him. Gabe in turn loves to be around Ellis and does not feel drained or overwhelmed at all when he is round him. I loved their connection. I loved how Ellis just excepted Gabe for he was. I loved how Gabe was there to help and support Ellis. They were a great couple.

The side characters were great. Carrie, Gabe's mom was funny. I absolutely loved seeing Cal and Dawson again because I absolutely love Cal and how he continues to be so sweet and innocent. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series.

This book is duel POV, low angst, great chemistry and steam between the MCs, funny with lots of feels, and a sweet sweet HEA.

What a great continuation to Should the Sky Fall.

Ellis has some issues trusting his emotions but not his intuition, which is how he finds himself at Lost and Ground. Although their meet cute is more like a meet grumpy, Gabe is not deterred and Ellis finds himself there the next week. And the next.

I really liked how Ellis accepted everything about Gabe pretty quickly, and their connection was strong. These two were honestly so cute together.

I would be so interested in Jordan’s story! Not sure if that’s coming up or not!

I loved this book because it was genuinely one of the sweetest books ever. Gabe and Ellis are enough to give anyone a toothache with how cute and sweet they are. My heart was captured upon their first meeting. I will NEVER be over the coffee cup thing. Never.

I think there were a few dragging moments in this book where I wanted something to happen... but that just wasn't the vibe or the point of the book. The best elements this book had were how kind and caring the characters were and the humor. It was a powerful combo that had me completely ensnared. This book was very light and fluffy and was all about the relationship building. Gabe and Ellis brought out the best in one another, and they truly deserved their sweet, happy ending. I will never be over this book and definitely recommend it as a pallette cleanser. It is a low stakes high fluff book. 9/10 recommend.

If you have not read Should the sky fall read it now and than read should our hearts catch fire! I love this author so much!! After the emotional journey of book one this 2nd book is exactly what is needed!!! It’s cute, heart felt and has great levels of spice!! Tried to read it in one sitting (because its hard to put down and reasonable to do 356 pages in one sit down) but I started it in a cafe and they closed at some point so had to drive home lol. The first book broke my heart and the second book put my soul back together!!

Can not wait for the next book you put out love!!! Jordan is going to be so fun ( for us not you 😉 ) and also ZEKE bhaha

If you have read this please drop in the comment what you thought!!

This was a good follow up to Should the Sky Fall. This book starts during the events of Should the Sky fall and ends after the ending of it. This one is Ellis and Gabe’s story. Ellis has uprooted his entire life because his brother, Cal, was in a serious car accident and has decided to leave the company. That means Ellis is the only one left to run it, instead of just running the Sydney office. Gabe co-owns the cafe Lost and Ground. When Ellis comes in for a cup of coffee with a bad attitude, Gabe can feel his sadness and loneliness because Gabe is an empath with some serious powers. He shows Ellis patience and kindness which throws Ellis for a loop cause he knows he’s being rude. Ellis can’t stay away, he keeps getting drawn back to Gabe. These two slowly build a connection and a bond while Ellis is dealing with his family drama. The connection between Ellis and Gabe is beautiful and amazing and very deep. This book is heavy on the emotions but gives a lot of lightness and smiles. It is a slow burn, lower spice book. There are a few spicy scenes. It’s more about the emotional bond and connection while Ellis navigates his new life and everything that comes with it. You definitely need to read book 1 or you will be so lost in book 2. This book is well written and made me miss Cal and Dawson, so it was nice getting some looks into their lives and seeing their relationship from others perspectives. To see Ellis and Cal mend what was broken and to work on a brotherly bond was awesome, especially seeing how much that means to Ellis. It was a good read with lots of big feels.

I hate to say it, but I was disappointed. The first book was amazing. I was really looking forward to this, but it just felt like it was missing something. I had hoped for a more supernatural element like in the first book. While it was present, I didn't feel like it was enough, especially with Gabe's unique gift. I don't know if I'll be able to read Ash's story. I'm not into D/s, and Ash really disappointed me in this book with his behavior. Honestly, I loved more snippets of Cal and Dawson. Those two stole my heart in book one. It's not that I didn't like Ellis and Gabe, I just felt like there could be more.

4.5/5 I think you can get most enjoyment out of this novel if you read book 1 first. They overlap in time, and the plot and characters of book 1 have a pretty strong impact on Ellis in this book. There’s so much going on in his life, and it is so wonderful to see Gabe help him realise his own worth.

I loved Gabe’s inability to filter, the coffee messages, working through crappy childhoods, and figuring out what is actually important in life. It was hard watching Ellis be so hard on himself, so anytime Gabe could push him out of that, it was lovely to watch. It was equally nice to see Gabe connect so much with someone and feel so open around him. I honestly just enjoyed wholeheartedly seeing these two open up to one another.

Gabe’s mom was hilarious, figuring things out with Cal and Dawson tugged on my heartstrings, and sneaking Lola in there was so cute. I also loved that Gabe ruined Ellis for any other coffee.

I’m intrigued about Ash and Kieran’s story mostly because I feel like homicide is more likely to be committed first, lol.

I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.

This book is really well written and most enjoyable. I loved Gabe and Ellis and their love story interwoven with Gabe’s supernatural gift as well as Cal and his background story. This book is refreshingly a little different and I loved it. The characters are well rounded and believable. I’ve not read any books by this Author previously, but will definitely be looking for more. Highly recommended!
