Anna Sayburn Lane is the author of page-turning murder mysteries set in jazz age London, and of award-winning short stories and contemporary thrillers. Her debut novel, Unlawful Things, was shortlisted for the Virago New Crime Writing award, and her first historical mystery, Blackmail In Bloomsbury, has been described as ‘like slipping on a pair of elegant evening gloves and slipping back to the golden age of detective fiction’.

Before turning to fiction, Anna worked as a journalist for local newspapers and medical journals – useful for thinking up novel ways of bumping off fictional characters. She lives in the UK, sharing her time between London and a small seaside town.

I have been delighted with this series. Of the first three books I read so far they are well written, move at a great pace and each story has very intriguing characters.

An easy and fun read with a twist at the end. I have enjoyed the first two books of this series and look forward to the rest of them.

Marjorie and Mrs Jameson are characters I'd like to know and have over for tea! This mystery gives glimpses into their lives as they're being developed into the complex beings they are! We see a vivacious Marjorie with a good grasp on her new independent life. Hidden aspects of Mrs. Jameson are revealed. I enjoyed seeing two minor characters from the first book becoming part of the investigative team and having a larger role in this mystery. This particular mystery of course is solved ~ however, the reader is left with a chilling thought .....is the murderer finished? A relatively new series in which you should definitely invest your time!

I just started this series this week. I already can't wait for the next one.

What I like about the most is that you truly don't know who the culprit is until the end. There are lots of suspects with good cause to suspect them.

I started this series being not sure if I would like it. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised! I read the first one, and immediately got the second. The characters are fresh, the settings were real, and the story grabs you and pulls up into it. I have already recommended it to one of my friends who also loves mysteries and this time period. Now on to the third!

I so happy to have discovered Anna Sayburn Lane’s series. Incredibly well written, it evokes the atmosphere of the 1920s beautifully. These mysteries are masterfully crafted, and I look forward to reading the next one.

The Soho Jazz Murders by Anna Sayburn Lane is the second book in the 1920 Murder Mystery series. It is a delightful and humorous mystery set in the Jazz Age, AKA the Roaring Twenties. This second book of the series has all the sparkle of the Jazz Age colliding with the darkness of drug trafficking, cocaine and opium dens.

Mrs. Jameson, an American Private Investigator, and her secretary/apprentice investigator, Marjorie Swallow are invited to dine at the residence of the American Ambassador to England. They are joined by the ambassador’s daughter, Felicity, his 19 year-old niece, Daisy, visiting from the States and the ambassador’s Secretary, John Franklin. Daisy is a fun-loving flapper. That evening Mr. Franklin escorts Marjorie, Daisy and Felicity to the Harlequin Jazz Club in Soho for a night of jazz music and dancing. The next day Daisy is found dead in her bedroom.

The ambassador, who is a great friend of Mrs. Jameson, asks her to investigate his niece's death. Marjorie masquerades as a dance hostess at the Harlequin to find clues to Daisy’s death. In spite of many twists and turns, Mrs. Jameson and Marjorie do, of course, solve the mystery. I encourage you to read the book to find out who killed Daisy.

The Soho Jazz Murders was a fun and thrilling read. I look forward to the next 1920 Murder Mystery.

I received this as an ARC. I love murder mysteries set during this time period(the 1920's). What did they have during this time period. Jazz Clubs. This time Mrs. Jameson and her assistant Marjorie S. Wallace are investigating the death of Daisy Caldwell the daughter of Ambassador Caldwell of a possible cocaine overdose. Who would have wanted her dead. Grab a copy and find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Anna Sayburn Lane master piece!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 4, 2024
Anna Sayburn Lane is a truly remarkable murder mystery writer. I'm not going to reveal the plot - you need to read this book if you like to see the lies, luck and lives unravel before your very own eyes. The characters are real and believable. The struggle of lives in the post WW1 era is revealed. Prejudices, viciousness, hard work and easy money are all intermingled. Help to crack this case comes from those people who know what it is like to suffer because of other's inhumanity and built in bias.

I'm loving this new series by Anna Sayburn Lane! Being a Londoner, it made it extra thrilling to experience the sights and sounds of Soho alongside Marjorie Swallow, Sayburn Lane's risk-taking young sleuth. I was gripped from start to finish. Loved the camaraderie and pluck of the women in the jazz club!
