The reason many Sherlock Holmes-inspired novels fail, at least as often as they succeed, is because more effort and attention is lavished upon the concept of Holmes than the bones of a good plot, and here Sherrinford breaks the Sherlock Holmes mould by imbuing Song for Someone with a pleasing contemporary feel to give us a fresh look at the iconic is made possible by the introduction of Irene Adler, and it's through her burgeoning relationship with Holmes that Sherrinford does so much more than simply telling another Sherlock Holmes adventure.
Readers expecting opera and opium will not be disappointed. Song for Someone is a novel with a lot of moving parts that are presented from the narrative perspectives of Irene and Sherlock's journals, and it's clear from the start that Irene is very much Sherlock's equal when it comes to intellect and cutting repertoire. This is brought to the fore by a plot that is tightly paced whilst leaving just enough breathing room for Sherrinford's characters to thrive, and readers will be won over by the delightful dynamics between them.
The fun of a good story is rarely in its conclusion, but in the complications the characters face along the way, and here Sherrinford has pitched it just right with a fine supporting cast of characters that makes a persuasive case for multiple highly enjoyable read that falls into the " something for everyone" category. Song for Someone proves a fine showcase for a reimagined Holmes character and certainly won't disappoint.
Jon Oshiro reviews Song for Someone- The Sign of Holmes 24th of May, 2023
I had not read any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holomes books until i read Song for Someone by KD Sherrinford (my first e-book).
And while investigating mysteries from the viewpoint of Dr. Watson intrigues how Holmes is able to precisely solve a mystery, Sherrinford has essentially used a magnifying glass, as we look at Holmes and the mysteries of the heart.
Using multiple narratives, we see and begin to understand the character from each one's perspective. The emotions they wrestle with, and he appreciation and acceptance that love allows us to see.
We are all without love, we remain different, investigate Song for Someome. Highly recommended, an endearing look at an enduring

Song for Someone by KD Sherrinford is a captivating historical romance set against the vivid backdrop of Victorian London. It masterfully unveils a clandestine affair between the enchanting opera singer Irene Adler and the illustrious detective Sherlock Holmes. When a sinister murder claims Irene's husband, their worlds collide, compelling them to seek refuge on a Tuscany farm. Initially, Irene perceives Sherlock as aloof and detached. However, as their story unfolds, their dynamic evolves, leaving readers in suspense. Will their burgeoning emotions culminate in lasting affection? Will external threats snuff out their budding romance?
I was entranced by Sherrinford's skilled narrative, interspersing suspense with the nuanced complexities of the protagonists' relationship. The author
demonstrates a deep reverence for Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic character,

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2024SONG FOR SOMEONE by KD Sherrinford doesn’t disappoint. What moved me the most was how expertly the characters were developed and written. KD honored Sherlock Holmes’ legacy with his dynamic personality, quirks, and flaws, and her interpretation of Irene Adler was simply delightful. As a singer, I loved the extra color added to the story with Irene’s vocal career. Additionally, the language and historical elements really added to the story’s authenticity… I had to look up a few words here and there! For those who love romance with a solid storyline and no hot spice, this is for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2024In a Song for Someone we are introduced to two worlds and two time periods. Often a difficult way to weave a smooth telling of a storyline but this one is well-done.
Of course, if you are a Sherlock Holmes fan you’ll enjoy the mystery, danger, and intrigue. But if you enjoy the beauty of music, art, opera, Tuscany, I could go on, you will also enjoy this book.
There are so many lovely details. It’s a story of family. Friends. Antagonistic relationships that surprisingly become amorous. Heartache and triumphant. I highly recommend it if you enjoy settling into a time and place and being immersed in story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2025This is a must read! The journey they go on, will make you wish you were there, too.
Enjoy this excellent story…you won’t be disappointed!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2024I love historical fiction, and Sherlock Holmes is forever an intriguing character. The author does an amazing job of fleshing out Holmes’ character and odd traits while building a strong mystery. With an intriguing back story and romance between Holmes and Adler, the story takes some tragic turns when Holmes puts his love for Adler in second place to her safety. While the author writes a complicated story beautifully, the plot does not move quickly. For those readers who want to indulge in fabulous description and a slow burn, this is for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2024Man, what a story! Tremendous amount of details and characters that you enjoy following! A plot that is woven through a classic story line with details that will make you picture this book play out like a movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2024Not all books are for everyone, and this one just isn't for me. The base idea/story is good. The way it's written feels a little stiff for me. The prologue, I feel, could be a book on its own given the right details. There are some details in this book that I felt didn't contribute to the story but slowed it down some, while other parts of the book felt in need of more details. As I said, the general storyline is good.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2024Conan Doyle fans might be as perplexed by the beginning of this book as I was. However, only to be quickly swept in to the ease with which the author weaves together classic and modern storylines. I believe many Sherlock fans will enjoy this beautifully sculptured tale. I know I did!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2023I really enjoyed this story of Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler. The best part was having a view of what Sherlock’s personal life might have been like. Irene Adler was a smart, strong female character…one easy to admire. I look forward to reading the other books in this series. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars You won't put this down!
This is a beautifully-written novel. The author does a wonderful job of describing the period (late 19th century) in painstaking detail. It’s obvious that she’s done solid research, given the detailed descriptions of Italy, England, and the opera world. Her lead characters—Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler—are strong, complex, and believable, and the sexual tension between them is conveyed well. In addition, the author has a strong ear for dialogue. I especially enjoyed the witty banter between the passionate Adler and the overly-logical Holmes. The plot moves at a reasonably quick pace and has lots of unexpected twists. A story you won’t be able to put down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Writing. Penned with Soul
This is an elegant and captivating story, taking us into the world of Sherlock Holmes through the narrative of Charlotte Sapori a young woman on the cusp of becoming a doctor.
The writing is strong and accomplished, balancing evocative prose with an engaging narrative that unravels deep and well-kept family secrets. From Holmes to the charming and renowned Irene Adler every character has the complexity readers would expect from this legendary homage. Charley's voice adds a fresh perspective to the Sherlock Holmes legacy. Her emotional quest for answers through story-revealing journals brings life to the book
This novel would be a perfect candidate for a comparative paper alongside Arthur Conan Doyle’s original works. Song for Someone builds on the Holmes books with insight into his personal life, particularly through his relationships. It offers rich material for academic analysis. The contrast between Holmes' cold persona and the warmth of family life creates fascinating layers of complexity. The writing is sublime, the description and tone beautiful and the characters vivid and real.
I’d ask if KD Sherrinford could be Conan Doyle incarnate if not for the more gentle, and modern style. I prefer this to any of the books by the great author, and very much look forward to the next one in the series. Beautiful and captivating, I loved it. Recommended.

I really enjoyed this story, a Sherlock Holmes variation with a difference. Deftly plotted, it's both a mystery and an engaging love story, suffused throughout with the author's love of and expertise in music.

This book is written from various POV’s, flipping from Irene Adler /Charlotte Sapori / Sherlock Holmes.

And…the cherry on the icing is that you also follow Sherlock’s personal life. A pure delice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful and Thrilling
If you ever wondered what would happen if Sherlock Holmes were to marry and if he were to marry Irene Adler, here you have it. Wonderfully written, original, and thrilling. You'll see an unknown side of Holmes as a husband and father and a man who has to protect his family. Adler holds her own, the only woman who could ever captivate him. Adler is wonderful, full complex, real. Absolutely loved it.
