Steal the Morrow: A Retelling of Oliver Twist Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

The city may be dangerous, but it holds his only hope…

Abandoned on a remote highway after bandits murder his parents, young Olifur finds safety with Fritjof. The gruff woodsman teaches him and other orphans to live off the land. When Fritjof falls ill, Olifur will risk everything to save his mentor—even travel to far-off Melar seeking a doctor.

However, the city of Melar is more perilous than Olifur imagined, and doctors aren't cheap. His quest leads him first to a hazardous job working on the elevated trains high above the city. But the dangers in the clouds are nothing compared to those on the ground. Olifur soon finds himself ensnared in a web of professional thieves, and he must think fast if he is to survive the day and bring the much-needed aid to Fritjof before it is too late.

Schmidt reweaves Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist" into an exciting tale of integrity and perseverance in this gaslamp-fantasy adventure.

Review

Jenelle L. Schmidt's "Steal the Morrow," a fantasy retelling of Oliver Twist, is anything but derivative. Set in an immersive, immediately-believable realm, Steal the Morrow will first steal your heart and then catapult you into a harrowing tale that somehow leaves you both breathless and hopeful. A must read for Fantasy and Dickens fans alike.
—Wayne Thomas Batson, Bestselling Author of The Door Within Trilogy and the epic Myridian Constellation

Charles Dickens meets Middle Earth ... Steal the Morrow takes the gritty realism of Charles Dickens' England and transports it to a world highlighted by fantastical creatures and unique technology. The world building has the depth of a Tolkien book, without overpowering the heart wrenching story ... The struggles in the great outdoors and in the heart of the city provide an inspiring take of overcoming adversity with integrity.
~Allen Brokken, author of the Towers of Light series

Steal the Morrow is a delightful reimagining of Dickens' Oliver Twist. The home and family the orphaned, noble Olifur finds in the forest and then must work hard to return to are every adventurous child's dream! Highly recommended.
~E.J. Kitchens, author of The Magic Collectors stories

Jenelle L. Schmidt crafted a fun adventure story full of friendship and life lessons for the whole family. Olifur is an endearing young boy who brings out the child-like heart and awe in all of us.
- Ralene Burke, author of The Sacred Armor trilogy

Steal the Morrow gives Charles Dickens a run for his money! The hero, Olifur, will steal your heart. Full of wistful beauty and enthralling characters, Steal the Morrow is at once hopeful and heartbreaking. A study in the contrast of light and dark of our world, the story sweeps you from the beauty of grace, kindness, and sharing into the heart of darkness where thievery and cruelty rule the day.
-S.L. Dooley, author of The Portal Slayer trilogy

Come along with me on an epic adventure. We will face dragons (we might even ride them), we will pilot airships. We will battle villains. We will join a pirate crew. We will wield magical swords against the forces of evil.

And we will be home in time for dinner.

But we will not go home unchanged.

Fantastical adventures ahead! But be warned:

Safe Return Doubtful!

During the days, I wrangle four small hobbits and help them along on their adventures.

Basically, I'm Gandalf.

But come evenings, when the hobbits are sleeping... I become my alter-ego: PLOT WIZARD (still a wizard, just a different kind)... and adventures await in the pages I scribble upon.

I'm a dreamer, a relentless opener of doors in the hope of someday finding passage to Narnia, and story girl.

    *Audiobook review*

I Confess I have never actually read Oliver Twist so I can't comment on the retelling aspect of this novel. But the vibes were right. It felt like it could have been Oliver Twist.

Young orphan living in a steampunk, pseudo Victorian, world. That's about all you need to be a Twist retelling. And this had it in droves.

I really enjoyed Olivers story. Mostly I loved how this Oliver wasn't just an aimless orphan but someone who had actual goals to achieve and a family to fight to get to.

Jenelle Leann Schmit pens a tale of hope and perseverance in a world that seems out to destroy our young protagonist.

Benjamin Fife expertly read this audiobook. I love that he does new voices for every character so you can keep them straight while you listen.

Jenelle Leanne Schmidt did a great job of retelling Oliver Twist. She took a story of overwhelming despair and infused Oliver with hope, hard work and determination to succeed.

Please don't throw things at me for this, but I actually liked Steal the Morrow better than the book it's retelling, Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. :-o I know, I know, but hear me out.

Steal the Morrow has a happier ending, less misery, less forced thievery, far nicer characters, and a Robin Hood aspect, all of which make me like it a lot more than Oliver Twist. I'm not saying it's a better book, I'm just saying I personally like and enjoy it more.

I'm not one to enjoy too much angst & wordy descriptions lose me, so I mostly scan over the long ones. Jenelle seems to get it just right. The story is sad but the good guys win and there is a beautiful HEA that left me smiling & glad that I read it. It's clean. There is some blood & violence but there is much more of "overcoming the bad stuff through hard work, faith and a little help".

    For children and adults,
I don't know if I can say enough good about this book. Loosely based on Oliver Twist, I found it remedied everything I disliked about the original. It was everything I want in books: wholesome, interesting, and teaches good principles by example and precept.
It was everything a book should be.
I look forward to trying the author's other books. She recommends trying the other standalone stories in the collection.
Thematic elements: family, honesty, belief in God, virtue, integrity, hard work, charity, perseverance, patience, honoring women and treating them well, mourning is touched upon gently but realistically.
Content warnings: Not much. There is some violence in the beginning and towards the end, but it is treated well and while sad, I did not find it disturbing. Zero sexuality, no magic for those who don't like that sort of thing (there is a suggestion that some people believe something is magic but it is explained that that is how people explain things they don't understand).
I would recommend it for 12 and up, but if you had a mature 9 year old who could handle the depiction and theme of parental death present I'd let them read it.
Setting: Forest and city, in a time similar economically and socially to the late 1800s.

Olifur and company will win over readers of all ages with their adventures and struggles. I particularly loved Olifur’s attitude, his willingness to help others, and his lessons in perseverance. Parents will find an excellent novel for young teens and tweens packed with life lessons and a suspenseful plot.

I loved the stakes that created a realistic struggle for Olifur to overcome. He was easy to cheer for as he navigated heartbreaking challenges and worked hard to help others. The forest connections created a refreshing escape amid the chaos of the big city. I love the idea of being self sufficient and learning how to survive in nature. Definitely recommend reading this fantastic tale!

This book was like a breath of fresh forest air, on a stifling summer day! I could hardly put it down, and found myself cheering for Olifer, as well as holding my breath during the terrifying escapes. Great read for all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming retelling!

Unlike Oliver Twist’s depressing tone, this retelling holds a ray of hopefulness! You can’t help falling in love with Olifur & the ragtag band of friends he encounters.

It’s the perfect tale for those who love found family, camping & adventure, bows & arrows, no romance, and Dickens’s stories without the verbosity!
