- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2024Alexi Ellis has planned a limited participation Investigative journalism seminar to bring publicity and prestige to Hopgood Hall, the boutique hotel she has invested in. While several murders at the hotel have given it a certain notoriety, the true crime books Alexi has written about those events have made her a bestselling author. Peter Vaughn, once her boss and lover, has helped select the six attendees and promised nationwide attention when their story is printed in his newspaper chain. A young woman’s disappearance and a robbery suspect have dominated the local news and Alexi is not surprised when one of her students, Peter Foreman, looks for a link. He may have found it because Alexi discovers his dead body. Now one more death is linked to Hopgood Hall and Alexi is a suspect. Now her partner Jack Maddox becomes involved to clear her name. Their personal relationship is clouded by suspicion and doubt but nothing is as complicated as the motives of the killer and his victim.
A Story to Strangle for is the fourth in the excellent Hopgood Hall series. It works well as a standalone, well plotted mystery. Cheryl and Drew are background characters now while the would-be journalists dominate. Alexi and Jack’s bond takes center stage as Peter Vaughn tries to rekindle their relationship and Jack’s assistant attempts to take a more important part in his life. I’m looking forward to what comes next! 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and E.V. Hunter for this ARC.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2024Alexi once again tries to bolster the boutique inn in which she’s invested by having a journalism workshop for interested writers. To test the waters, the first group is a small group from a group approved by Alexi’s former lover and editor,
Patrick. Patrick will judge the final submissions for publication in the paper he edits. Hopgood Hall has too frequently received attention about murders at the inn and Alexi is trying her best to improve her relations with the village. When one of the participants is found dead, the focus on murder and its reflection on the inn causes Alexi and her partner Jack to investigate. This book is all about relationships, Alexi and Jack’s with interference from Patrick and Jack’s business partner Cassie; the victim and one of the other participants; a missing woman and her husband; Patrick and one of the participants; and more. The past has a strong influence on the plot here. Another enjoyable read about Jack and Alexi (and that picky cat, Cosmo).
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2024A Story to Strangle For by E.V. Hunter is a very good story. I read it in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. The story had suspense, multiple suspects, and interesting characters.
The story is about Alexi Ellis, who is determined to save her beloved Hopgood Hall from any more bad press. A writing course for wannabe journalists shouldn't cause too many issues and will hopefully take the heat off Hopgood Hall. But, of course, disaster strikes when one of the group is found dead in a local pub. What’s worse, Alexi was the last person to see the victim alive, which makes her suspect number one.
The book falls into the cozy mystery genre. Cosmo the cat is a great character! This is book 4 in the series.
I would recommend this book, as it is a fun, enjoyable read with a good mystery.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2024Thank you to #NetGalley, Boldwood Books and E. V. Hunter for the opportunity to read an advance copy of A Story to Strangle For, to be published 6 January 2024. 4/5 Stars for this cute Cozy Mystery that featured Cosmo, the cat with an attitude. Alexi, an investigative journalist gives a five day class on writing which of course turns into a murder investigation. There are a number of potential criminals and the trick is finding out who did it and why. Great read for anyone who enjoys Cozy Mysteries. #NetGalley #BoldwoodBooks #E.V.Hunter #AStorytoStrangleFor
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2024The Hopgood Hall mysteries are available for free with Kindle Unlimited, and the first three books are 'good enough', introducing interesting characters and relationships. Foolishly, I paid for this one (KU trial expired)... perhaps the author's sloppiest effort to date.
Beyond the typos, there is so much repetition throughout... not just bringing new readers up to speed if they skipped the prior books for some reason... but as if this book was written in chunks, months apart, and the author couldn't remember if they had already explained some backstory about Cassie, Patrick, Jack and Alex, etc etc... and had to repeat it all at least 4 to 6 times. Some of the sentences feel like they came verbatim from the prior books in the series.
A simple proof-reading might have let the author clean up this mess... and certainly hiring an editor would have been a wise move. Beyond the typos, grammatical errors and endless repetition, there are numerous plot holes that an editor would have caught as well - all easy enough to clear up with a little effort. But, this was rushed out the door.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2024This was another cozy little mystery. It has some twists and turns. I don’t think it’s my favorite of the series so far. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the early copy

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good read, kept me guessing to the end...
Book 4 in this mystery series, set in a hotel in racing country.
Alexi has invested in a hotel and conference centre run by her best friend and husband. There have been several murders in the area since Alexi moved there, which has affected the hotel trade. Before Alexi moved to the area, she was a successful journalist in London; to capitalise on this, she is running a writing course for would be journalists.
When one of her course participants is murdered, she and her partner, Jack, an ex policeman turned private investigator have to find out what happened and who killed the person as its clear Alexi is being set up. Alexi's ex partner, Patrick, the man who caused her to walk out of the job she loved, is involved in the course and has never given up hope of reconciling with her.
It was a really good read, which kept me guessing to the end.
Each book is a standalone mystery, but the books are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and wider storyline.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am really enjoying this series.
The plot was complex with several twists and turns and I wasn’t sure exactly who had done it until the end. If I have one criticism it would be the several references to Civil Servants being pedantic and boring! Most civil servants don’t work in top secret departments and certainly aren’t boring! I am looking forward to the next one very much!
