Subtle Bodies (PsyCop Book 13) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 596 ratings

“It’s probably nothing….”

Usually, when Victor Bayne is called upon to investigate a ghostly apparition, the “haunting” can be chalked up to a perfectly mundane cause. When he’s sent to check out some suspicious phenomena in small-town Iowa—and no one seems unduly alarmed—he’s hoping for more of a weekend getaway. Especially since he’s bringing along Jacob as his Stiff.

He ends up finding way more than he bargained for. Women undressing in public—with no memory of doing so. A car rental agent who knows far more than she should. And a shocking discovery they must keep to themselves at all costs.

Instead of merely supporting Vic, Jacob finds himself thrust into the driver’s seat, using a talent that’s clumsy and untested. And when Vic starts acting just as strange as the stripping women, all bets are off.

Can Vic and Jacob get a handle on the situation before FPMP National storms in and shuts them down for good?

PsyCop is an ongoing series filled with supernatural action and delightfully awkward humor–with a steady undercurrent of gay romance. It’s best read in order, so if you’re new to the series, start with PsyCop #1, Among the Living…and prepare for a hauntingly good read.

While this is the 13th novel in the series "PYSCOP" the author has not let up on keeping the reader interested and entertained with the goings on of Vic and Jacob. There are twists and turns that make the reader think that
this will never get solved...and yet the two manage to fix the "problems" with great effort on their parts and the reader's willingness to hang in to the very end. Vic and Jacob have become like members of my illusional family.
I see one more book on the to read list...and I am not sure if it is the end of the series or not. I hope not!

Disclaimer -- I am totally in love with this whole series, to the point where I own both E-book and Audiobook versions of each book, so I freely admit I may not be entirely unbiased. I’m hooked to the point that when reading this book, I was hearing it in my head in Gomez Pugh’s voice (he is the narrator of the Audiobooks). I’m trying to stay as neutral as possible, but frankly it would have to be REALLY bad for me not enjoy it

For starters, if you haven’t already read the rest of the series stop reading this review and read the books 1-12. If you’re not up to speed on the series, then some of the plot points in this book won’t make any sense.

If you are still reading this review then I’m going to presume that you already know the back-story that sets the scene for this book. Briefly -- Vic and Jacob are now husband and husband, and we know for a fact that on top of being a True Stiff, Jacob DOES have some kind of hereditary psychic ability, but we don’t know what it really is or how it works. But that’s OK because Vic and Jacob are equally in the dark. That bit of uncertainty WILL play a role in the plot of this book.

I will NOT go into specific plot points, but I will state that Vic and Jacob wind up researching an official FPMP case together in the middle of Nowhere-Ville Iowa. I mention that because the fact that it’s a small town plays a role in the book. When Vic first gets the assignment, he specifically ASKS to have Jacob accompany him. This is an interesting twist, since from the time our guys started with FPMP we haven’t seen them together in action as much. Vic’s job is a mixture of research into how medium-ship works (and how FPMP can better identify mediums) and some ghost-busting in the field. Jacob works in FPMP’s equivalent to a law enforcement’s Internal Affairs department. Since starting at FPMP the only time they’ve really investigated together was when they were trying to piece together things about the psychic history of Jacob’s family. For me seeing our guys out in the field together, in an OFFICOIAL capacity, was awesome. Until then I hadn’t realized that I had missed seeing that part of their relationship.

Since I don’t want to give away spoilers, I’m not going to say ANY more about the plot. Suffice it to say, our Guys take care of business, and what they learn about Jacob’s abilities helps them get the job done.
JCP – Would FPMP ever consider making Jacob Vic’s official all-the-time partner when out in the field? (Please, please, pretty please, I’m begging).

Bottom Line – I’m scoring this as 4 out of 5. To me there were points where the storyline seemed to bog down a bit, but my impatience at getting through may have played a part in that. I plowed through the book in only two sittings because: (A) I was that into it; and (B) since I was on vacation I didn’t have my job interrupting reading time. I will have a better handle on my feelings regarding the pacing when I re-read it (and YES, I will be re-reading it and will almost definitely be buying the Audiobook as well).

Ghost orbs, flayed, plasticized human bodies and bizarre medical specimen displays were just the beginning of this mysterious and enlightening episode in the further adventures of Vic and Jacob. Along the way we saw a couple of old friends. There's a priceless (no pun intended) scene with Carl at the beginning which made me laugh for so many reasons. Then there's Dr. K, who maybe we shouldn't trust, but I do. He's a wily old guy, but I don't get a malevolent vibe off him. Then there's a new friend who happens to work in a funeral home. And Vic goes into a basement, at a funeral home, where there are dead bodies, through a door marked Embalming, in order to speak with said new friend.
This book contains the unusual as well as the unexpected and then follows it up with the really unexpected. It delves deeper into the unknown reaches of Vic and Jacob's metaphysical world, but I can't say too much without spoiling it. I can say there were a few anxious moments where I worried a lot about Vic and what happened to him and whether he'd ever be the same again.
If you've been reading these all along, you won't want to miss this one. There is new world information as well as the good feels of Vic and Jacob's interactions.
    Loved it so much!

Part Urban Fantasy, part Noir Thriller, part Harlequin Romance, the Psycop series stands apart from the typical M/M romance offerings.

Victor Bayne (the main character) is one of the most relatable and unreliable narrators I’ve encountered in fiction. I fell in love with Vic on line one, of book one. His quick wit, neurotic tendencies, social awkwardness, and sardonic humor really make the world come alive.

In this latest adventure, Vic and Jacob leave the comfort of their familiar stomping grounds, for what should have been an odd but simple investigation. Which quickly spirals out of control, as we delve deeper into the unknown reaches of the series’ metaphysical world and the scope of Vic and Jacob’s powers.

The plot's twists and turns had me guessing right up until the end. I remain a loyal fan and can't wait until the next book. Missed an opportunity for a slasher story on the 13th there though. ;)

This book was a roller coaster ride of strange events and some of my favorite characters return in top form but still learning their craft. Vic and Jacob seem to be developing a bit of each other's personality traits and it's fascinating to study both their improved abilities at dealing with supernatural creatures and the highly logical magical science which serves as a background in their world. Lots to think about here! These book covers are the absolute best, just how I picture Vic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yay! More Vic and Jacob! And another few blasts from the past...

...but I don't want to give any spoilers.

One complaint - seemed way to short! But I'd say that if it was the size of War and Peace 🤷🏻‍♀️

Vic and Jacob getting a better handle on their psychic powers while helping people. And generally being Vic and Jacob, which for Vic means being a little weird - but if you know his background - that's normal.

Both guys have more power, more confidence and more ability than they think. They also have plenty of allies if they just look.

Hint, hint Jordan, but I'm waiting for another book now...just saying...

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Victor Bayne

Disclaimer: I received an ARC and was asked to post an honest review but I also bought a copy just because I love them so. (side note: I own all the books, short stories and audio of this series and most of the authors other works, yes I’m a fan girl )

So while I am a bit biased being a fan of the author already, I’m also an avid reader and there is a reason I love this series. They are damn good!!

Vic is my favorite example to give to anyone on how you write believable character development and keep it interesting. We have been with him since he was an auracel popping insomniac trying to survive and be as unobtrusive and forgettable as possible, to this Vic who is now happily married, more confidant and finally getting a grip on his reality and his talent.

I’m not going through the books plot and reveal spoilers and story line because I personally hate reviews like that and the book jacket gives you the basics already.

I will say this installment was the same caliber of writing we have come to expect from the author. Laughs, neurotic Vic, interesting story, some creepiness and some sexy times. Everything you could want from Vic and new insight into Jacob. Every guess I made on who might be behind the happenings in Iowa were wrong and I loved that.

I am already looking forward to the next one!! (less)

When a series is so good sometimes you wait on a new release, just in case it doesn’t fulfill its promise. I needn’t have worried. Vic and Jakob are their same wonderful selves, the plot is intricate and we keep learning more about talent. I will never stop recommending these books.
