Then There Was You: An age gap, single mom romance (Grace General Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 75 ratings

Megan Abernathy knows two things for certain.

1. Men are trash.

2. Men that aren’t complete trash, are only good for one thing…

That attitude kept her safe. Work hard, play harder, don't let anyone get too close. Then one day her life changed. Her axis was permanently altered, responsibility thrust on her in the form of her five-year-old nephew, who now calls her mom.

Enter Dr. James “Jim” Charlebois. With his annoyingly upbeat personality, Meg planned to avoid him at all costs. Despite her efforts to keep her distance, circumstances force them together, and the tension between them becomes palpable. They share one unforgettable night with no expectations for the future.

Except fate takes control, and their paths intertwine yet again. The old Meg would have never embraced the feelings bubbling to the surface, but Jim does just enough to leave her wondering if not all men are as awful as they’ve once proven to be.

Can she overcome her fears and let love in, or are some men just too good to be true?

Laura Beth is your typical Midwestern gal who writes swoony and steamy medical romance born from her career as an RN. She lives in small town Wisconsin with her husband, toddler, adorable pup, and her own feral orange kitty. When she's not writing about a book boyfriend who falls hard for a sassy nurse, she can be found reading all things romance, gardening, or spending time outdoors with her family.

Absolute perfection!
Tropes: - Doctor x nurse - Age gap - Single guardian - He falls first - Black cat x golden retriever - Badass girl gang - Body positivity Meg and Jim have my heart in a way I didn't even know was possible. Right off the bat we're hit with spice, and then a slow burn that makes you forget is slow burning because you're so caught up in the story. Meg has had a rough go of life and a lifetime worth of responsibilities that shouldn't have even been an option at her age. I just kneww there was something about her that was going to draw us in, and oof did it draw! Jim, Jim, Jim.... Jiiiiiiim James Charlie boy. My god was he a blonde boy redemption story or what?! He is the goldenest of all retrievers and essentially weaseled his way into Meg's life in a way that wasn't disrupting and that she ended up craving. Jim waits patiently on the sidelines for Meg to catch up to him, and their friendship truly paved the way for their relationship. And Jim showing up for Jax in all the ways he needed? Done. I'm on the floor, please mop up my bleeding heart! Now, let's talk hard hitting emotions. With the amount of times I swooned, I also got teary eyed. There are so many amazing quotes in here that I think anyone who has lost someone in their life can relate to. 𝐼 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑘 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑠 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑒. Then There Was You is the last book in the Grace General series- and while the first two books are amazing, this can be read as a standalone. Also, the bonus epilogue? Hilarious! This series is wrapped up with a perfect little bow ❤️

This book is PERFECTION. Meg is snarky and independent and guarded. She’s got hard stuff to manage and doesn’t want to be vulnerable or ask for help. She just wanted one night to let go and pretend. To just be. Enter Dr Charlebois. He has fallen hard for Meg, and she doesn’t even know it. He would do anything, take whatever pieces, be patient. He earns her trust and is just the most incredible, wonderful, open and fun book boyfriend. And their spice???? HOT
This is so well written and perfectly done emotional honesty. I can’t say enough good things. Laura Beth nailed it. Just nailed it and I can’t get enough and for the whole series.

To say I was excited to read the third book in this series is an understatement. Laura Beth does a fantastic job writing medical romance, workplace tension, and truly jaded female main characters. The blurb reads as such a simple story, but Laura Beth weaves nuance into every scene. I am very sad that the series is concluded, but this book was the perfect way to finish it.
Megan’s journey from fiercely independent to embracing love and trust hit me right in the feels. And Dr. Jim Charlebois? The perfect mix of swoon-worthy and sincere. Their chemistry is off the charts, and the character growth is so real. If you love stories about healing, trust, and unforgettable passion, you need this book on your shelf!
    Tropes:
    Medica Romance
    Caretaker/Guardian
    Golden Retriever MMC
He Falls First (he fell in the second book!)
    Spicy
    Age Gap
Third (and final!) in the series
    Characters:
Megan – Fiercely independent, and caretaker of her brain-injured sister and her son, Meg feels as though she has to fight for literally everything in her life. She’s taking care of everyone – except herself. Enter Jim who wants to take care of her, and she’s fighting for control. It’s a battle Jim NEEDS to win!
Jim – Doctor Jim is exactly what Meg needs – fit, healthy, and simply wants to help Meg. He wants to do literally anything he can to get Megan in a better place, and he does. Donating money so her sister gets better care, spending time with Meg’s nephew so she can relax, and just being there when she needs him. He wants to be her everything, because he fell for her a long time ago, and cannot imagine a world without her.
    Some Highlights:
    - SO SAD this is the last book! Loved this series! So many uniquely different women with themes every type of woman will recognize
    - The Marcus / Jim twist was something I did NOT see coming! There were a few plot twists in the book I did see coming, but that one…just wow!
    - Both Meg and Jim are perfect for each other. They both have the best of intentions and only want good things to happen for others. It was so fun to watch them fall in love.
    - Meg and Jim both have “acts of service” as their love language, and I think that’s why it took them so long to fall in love. They just want to do nice things for each other, but Megan doesn’t have the capacity to trust that the nice things being done for her are genuine. Marcus ruined that for her, so she has to learn. It’s a good slow burn.
Thank you Laura Beth for allowing me to be an ARC reader! I can’t wait for your next read!

This book had me swooning and sobbing and wishing for it to never end! These two are literally perfect for eachother! The grief in this book is done in such a beautiful way! I’ve been anticipating their book from them moment we met them in the first book of the series and it was filled with all the heartbreaking and heartwarming scenes I knew it it would have!

Meg and Jim got me. I thought I loved the first two books in the Grace General series, I was wrong. Jackson with Jim absolutely melted me. Laura Beth, you are The Queen of Medical Romance.

I really really enjoyed this sweet story! The development of the relationship and the things the characters went through worked so well. This was so well written and I enjoyed it so much!
    Loved the medical setting
    Loved his ‘golden retriever-ness’
Loved how well they communicated with each other and really saw each other!
Loved the friends around them and supporting them.
    Favorite quotes:
“My favorite part was after the $3x. When you fell asleep in my arms, wearing my shirt, freshly **** by me. I wrapped myself around you, and for that small sliver of time I could pretend that you were mine, that we were something more than just one secretive night.” His voice trails off into the eerily quiet room. “That was my favorite part.”

“You’re hot like the angry redheads and at the same time you have this sweet soul like Lamb Chop. That’s what does it for me—you’re deep, finding beauty in music and the meaning in something like that. It’s… it’s rare.”

I love the way that Laura Beth writes and this was the perfect end to an amazing series. Dr. Jim is the kindest, most patient MMC and I just think his care and communication are top tier. Love this whole series!
