The Deal (Off-Campus Book 1) Kindle Edition
The international bestseller! A standalone novel* from New York Times and international bestselling author Elle Kennedy!
She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy…
Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice…even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.
...and it’s going to be oh so good
All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseShe manages to create such realistic characters that readers can’t help fall in love with. The Deal is no. exception to that. This book is actually our first introduction to her amazing world of obscenely attractive and crazy talented hockey players at Briar University. Wasting no time, we get straight to the wonderful and hot captain, Garrett Graham.
Garrett is a history major in his third year at Briar. Here is where Ms. Kennedy does something different, in shows, movies, and books we often see teachers and professors cutting slack for athletes especially ones that are currently in season. Yeah no, that’s not the case at Briar. Enter: Hannah Wells. If I am being technical, we start of in her perspective however I’m in love with Garrett, so we ignore that. The two of them are taking some sort of philosophical ethics course and when the story kicks off, they are getting their midterms back. You ever have that teacher that literally has either way two high of standards, can’t teach or both? I don’t know what the case is in this situation, but the majority of the class bombs that midterm, except for Hannah (and a few other students). Garrett is among those who failed however he is majorly screwed because if he doesn’t ace this makeup, he is no longer academically eligible for sports. After literally bumping into Hannah on his way out of the lecture hall, he sees her grade and decides that this girl will be his tutor and he won’t take no for an answer. He is relentless in his pursuit of her tutoring him that he goes so far as showing up at her work to beg. Finally, he finds the one thing he can offer to make her say yes: a fake date to catch another guy’s attention. Yeah, that fun cliché. She agrees to tutor him only through the retake because she is too focused on her winter showcase for the music department to tutor him all semester. Predictably speaking, that whole fake dating thing, yeah that backfires. I wonder sometimes if it ever works in any way other than making one of the two people realize they have feelings for each other.
Believe it or not though my favorite part of the book wasn’t the romance aspects of it. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed that don’t get me wrong. It was the way that Hannah and Garrett actually became friends and spent time together as friends outside of studying and trying to get her crush’s attention. They binged Breaking bad, watched stupid documentaries and she hung out with the rest of the team celebrating one of their birthdays. This is something that in my opinion gets missed a lot in romance is that if two people are friends and fake dating, we want to see them actually being friends and not just a couple.
Her characters are also so real. Like yes there’s no way this many perfect men exist for her to write 9 books about the hockey players that come through Briar. But that’s not what I mean, I mean her characters have substance to them, they have this wonderful thing that we all as real people have: past traumas. That being said, if you are a person that gets triggered by characters having been abused or sexually assaulted in the past, please consider this your trigger warning. This did all happen prior to the books first page so what we see is the aftermath of the traumas and not the actual events taking place if that makes any difference. If that is you, I would urge you to reconsider reading the story and the rest of this review because I do intend on discussing a little bit of what happens with those situations and how Garrett and Hannah chose to respond to them. Consider this also your spoiler alert as well.
When Hannah was 15, she went to a party with friends. At this party she was drugged and raped. Now, roughly 6 years later, we see how this has affected her. She refuses to drink if she is not alone and has some problems with intimacy. The cool thing though is that she uses her friendship with Garrett to help her slowly work through these problems. Once he relatively knows what her hang ups are Garrett never once pressures her or belittles her for them only helping her to slowly move past them in any way he can even if it means he plays the “bodyguard” for a night out with their friends so she can drink and not feel scared. And of course, because this is a romance novel and those two are clearly meant to be he also helps her work through her problems with sex in such a slow and patient way that, in combination with everything else we’ve seen from him, makes all the sense in the world why he is loved not only by her (though she is too dumb to admit it till later) and by all of us as readers. Garrett’s past is not all sunshine and roses either. Son of a former NHL superstar, he had to watch his mother slowly die of cancer and watch as his father’s anger was directed in the form of physical violence at his mother, and later at him. Garrett was routinely abused by his father for years until he learned to hit back, no one saw any warning signs or stepped in ever. All they saw was a retired famous athlete and his equally athletically gifted son. Hannah is the first person he ever felt comfortable opening up to about this and is there for him as a place of support when he is essentially forced to spend thanksgiving with his father and his new girlfriend. She does whatever she can to support him and to remind him that no matter who your parents are, it doesn’t determine who you will be when you are older. This is such an important message that honestly everyone needs to hear as do many of the other men in this series just for different reasons than Garrett.
This book is honestly in my opinion perfect, and I don’t think I’ve stopped recommending it to people since the first time I finished it.

Re-Read 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰:
🩵 I originally read this entire series in like 12 days back in 2022 when my reading journey was officially going strong. I actually own the lady model covers of this series as well which I will never be getting rid of - and I re-reading this book gave me all of the feels all over again.
🩵 Garret Graham gave me the same butterflies and same happy go lucky feeling he gave me 3 years ago and more.
🩵 Seriously, I adore Hannah, and I did 3 years ago too. As someone who is a 🍇 survivor I resonated with her then, and I still do now. Her choice on how she chose to heal, how she chose to move on from such a terrible time in her life was awe inspiring. She did the hard work, she put herself back together and she still put herself out there - cautiously at first, but then Garret barreled into her life like a stubborn golden retriever and that’s all she wrote.
🩵 This book made me laugh again, it put me in my feels and I am truly excited to see it come to the tv screen.

TW/CW: rape, being drugged at a party, and domestic abuse
This is the first book by Elle that I’ve read where it’s just her writing it. I had read The Royal Series about 6 years ago that she had cowritten with Jen Frederick, and I had also read to other books that they had published as Erin Watt.
I’ll be honest, I’ve wanted to read some of Elle’s books since I found out that Erin Watt was a pseudonym for two authors, and recently on Booktok, Elle’s Off-Campus/Briar U series started to show up on my FYP all the time ranking the guys and showing mood boards, so I gave in (not that it took much) and bought an ecopy then I finished it today and ended up buying a physical copy because I love Garrett and Hannah’s story so much.
Hannah is the girl on campus that kind of keeps to herself with her group of friends. She knows where she stands in the social world and is fine where she is at. It has been a year since her last relationship and finally has a crush on a new football transfer student.
Justin has captivated Hannah’s attention with his smile and love for Hemingway. He seems intelligent and caring , but Hannah can’t get out more than a few words while being near him.
After their midterm exam paper in ethics most of the class made a C or worse except for Hannah who made an A, and it’s because of that grade that has caught the attention of Garrett who needs tutoring to do better on the makeup exam that the teacher is giving to try to help the majority of the class.
While many fruitless attempts in trying to get Hannah to be Garett’s tutor by trying to pay her, help her with her social status, and countless other bribes to help him get the grade he needs to keep his GPA up to standards to play on the hockey team where he’s the team captain.
Garrett finally wears down Hannah’ refusal of tutoring by helping her try and get with Justin buy fake dating, but what happens when beneath all of the arguing and bantering between Hannah and Garrett are some real feelings that neither really know how to interpret since Garrett doesn’t want to date and Hannah thinks she doesn’t like him like that.
Sometimes it’s easier to talk about things with a person that you don’t have any interest in talking long-term and over the course of spending time together while studying and a few impromptu hangout moments. They get to know the other’s mannerism and habits and end up talking a good bit turning this tutoring thing into dare they say a friendship.
When it comes time for them to start the game plan for her to talk to Justin, Garrett isn’t ready to let Hannah go despite his rule on not wanting to date anyone and he knows that Hannah deserves someone that will treat her right and not smush her heart. Then when the time comes Hannah realizes that Garrett has some how managed to get his way into her heart, and she realizes that she has come to trust a guy in a way that she hasn’t been able to in forever.
I probably managed to read The Deal in about 8 hours if I’m being honest (and could have stayed up all night to read it cover to cover). I wasn’t sure how this book was going to play out since we had a fake dating type situation or not, Garrett getting around campus with the women, they conflicting schedules with Garrett playing hockey and Hannah getting ready for the Winter Formal thing, and just them in general since there was so much going on between them.
Not to make Garrett sound bad, but I though he was going to cheat on Hannah while they were in their in between stage of dating before it was exclusive, but he stayed loyal even when they started to move in that direction. I wanted to jus hug him because he is so thoughtful when it comes to Hannah and her trying to figure out her body when it comes to being in an intimate relationship with a guy after finding out her past leading to her not drinking and being so wary.
Then we find out that Garrett has a past of his own that is a constant reminder with him being on the hockey team. When we get to that part of the book where he talks about his mom’s death and how his father treated them, my heart just broke for that 12 year old boy and the man that he became carrying around all of that. Because even though from the outside he has a picture perfect life with his father being a famous hockey player, his life has never been as simple.
And, Hannah. All I can say that she is incredibly strong being able to work through her past. Even though she has learned to move forward, her parents are a reminder of the things that her family has been through because of what happened to her at a party and being in such a small town, they town all but outcasted them making life so much harder. Now that Hannah’s away at college, it has helped a good bit, but she can’t help but feel guilty for placing so much strain on her parents.
She has kept herself towards the shadows of many aspects in her life, so when Garrett tries to get her help, it isn’t an easy task, and he somehow managed to get Hannah to live again and trust him.

Can Garrett convince Hannah to strike a deal? Music major Hannah brings heavy baggage to the dating scene. Hockey star Garrett brings his charming, albeit cocky and persuasive ways.
A hot, even with the frozen hockey rink, book! Fun, spicy, smart! The author provides fantastic character development and deep themes in the collegiate setting. I loved the youthful banter, spice, and fun. I appreciated the adult themes and lessons that are woven throughout the book.
Come for the hockey and spice, stay for the deal that turns into something nice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super funn, fast delivery!
I love college romances, this was my first read from Elle Kennedy and it did not disappoint. I loved Garret, he gave such a golden retriever vibe he was amazing. Hannah is so smart, but not the virgin I don’t know anything except school type, she is fun smart. She knows her stuff even though she doesn’t trust guys or party’s after what she went through. I loved the tutor tutee relationship of the two of them and I love Garret in general he is amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI've already lost count of the number of times I've re-read The Deal since the first time, and while Garrett & Hanna still hold a special place in my heart, and I'm going to stand by the five star rating I gave the book the first time, I notice some things in the plot of these characters that I hadn't noticed in my first readings and didn't like so much now. Despite that, this story is still one of the cutest, funniest and most tender I've ever read, so I'm going to continue with my Off-Campu re-reading marathon!
Hanna is one of my favorite girls in this series, with an outgoing & very interesting personality and who is not afraid to speak her mind, especially about the jocks in Briar, plus I love reading her love for music, the beautiful relationship she has with her parents, how much they have supported her throughout her journey, and how obvious the love they have for her is. Obviously Hanna's personal story is heartbreaking, full of injustice, and has had major consequences on her sex life, BUT I love that Elle Kennedy shows Hanna with a with a path taken in a positive way in her post-rape recovery, even with the bumps she still has to overcome. I also LOVE reading how she fits into Garrett's group of friends, how easily she befriends some of them, and how his own group of friends becomes close to Garrett's circle, and what can I say about how wonderful her friendship with Allie is, the unconditional love and support between them and how much fun they are together.
Garrett is also one of the characters I love the most from this author, he's a cocky guy, captain of the hockey team who has his eyes on the NHL, until he starts to fail in one of his classes and his solution is to make Hanna agree to tutor him, something that is NOT EASY AT ALL, but very fun to read. Like Hanna, sometimes I think Garrett's cocky attitude is too much, but sometimes he also manages to even out with how silly he can be, as well as adorable, caring and funny, I really like his friendship with Logan, Tucker & Dean and I think this book introduces these characters VERY well and made me love them so much. Like Hanna, Garrett has a tragic history of mistreatment at the hands of his dad, a hockey legend, which has caused him some trauma and I really liked the way the author handled it.
I really like the love story between Hanna & Garrett! I love that Hanna at first has her eyes set on someone else and that Garrett isn't interested in having anything serious with anyone, but in the end the two end up completely in love with each other after hours of tutoring sesisons, the trust they develop in each other, and especially, after seeing how compatible they are despite their differences. These two are a VERY funny couple, with absurd fights that made me really enjoy their story, super tender, sweet & heartbreaking moments and truly unconditional love.
