But recognising his abilities, his father has more ambitious plans for him, and sends him to study in Paris, hoping that one day he will be able to make the MacGregors legal again.

Homesick and unhappy, Alex tries to make the most of his time abroad, eager to please his father and make him proud.

Julia has been a voracious reader since childhood, using books to escape the miseries of a turbulent adolescence. After leaving university with a degree in English Language and Literature, she spent her twenties trying to be a sensible and responsible person, even going so far as to work for the Civil Service. The book escape came in very useful there too.

And then she gave up trying to conform and resolved to spend the rest of her life living as she wanted to, not as others would like her to. She has since had a variety of jobs, including telesales, teaching and gilding. In her spare time she is still a voracious reader, and enjoys keeping fit and travelling the world. Life hasn’t always been good, but it has rarely been boring.

In 2014 she decided that rather than just escape into other people’s books, she would actually like to create some of her own, in the hopes that people would enjoy reading them as much as she does writing them. It seems that they do, and she has now published several historical novels, and has also branched out into contemporary fiction too.

In 2019 she moved to live in rural Scotland with her cat Constantine, and loves living in her favourite country!

Julia Brannan is a masterful storyteller, with an emphasis on character creation (in my opinion of course), because each character truly stands out as original and different as regular people. And if like me you’ve read every other Jacobite Chronicle book (the main series and side stories), which only reinforces how individual (and consistent - I have found no continuity errors!) the characters are.

The story is wonderful; I loved Alex’s story the most probably so of course I delighted in another book for him. It begins with Alex making the journey home from Paris after two long years at university, where his father and chieftain tell him it’s unlikely he’ll be able to come back before he’s finished school due to funds. Once he returns to Paris he knows he’s got to do something to stretch what little money he’s got, since he has three more years. He finds a friend in the new cook at a nearby pub, a young, free, black woman, and they strike a deal; he’s to teach her some of what he’s learning and she’ll feed him twice a day. He also finds a friend in a prostitute who lives nearby, though he supplies her with coal they don’t really have a bargain I just made a point to show how forward thinking he is for the times.

The ending had me ready to throw my kindle across the room, but luckily I remembered the whole “Part One” and it’s my fault alone I didn’t wait for Part Two. Which is funny because I obviously knew the major points of his life before The Mask Revealed, but the details and emotions while it’s happened (or shortly after anyway) were a lot to take in. And then that abrupt ending.

My only actual issue I can think of, and I think I’ve applied it to at least one book in this world, is that though it’s fiction and pleasing to read I just can’t buy for a second that so many people are so willing to overlook so many differences: Catholic vs Protestant, the former slave woman and her free daughter (both being black in 18th century Paris), the high born earl and the “savage” Highlander becoming so close and trusting so quickly; everyone is just too quick to acknowledge the other person may have a point and that they need to do better going forward regarding their prejudices and misconceptions. Yes, it’s how it should be but hell it’s 2024 and we can’t even agree the earth is spherical with photographic proof.

That of course would never deter me from reading anything Julia Brannan writes; I didn’t immediately buy physical copies of the main series after reading them on KU for nothing. Only to turn around and buy them all (and the side stories) on Audible also, which isn’t cheap lol. Amazon emailed me when this book came out; I hadn’t known about it prior to the email, and bought it on kindle immediately. These books are without a doubt some of my most favorites! Maybe they’re all just well adjusted people; the gods know I don’t have many of those in my life and perhaps I judge too harshly 😂

Also I literally can’t wait for part two so I can see how things go from here, and I can only hope Alex and William have more time together. They do appear to know each other very well in the main series so I feel confident there has to be more.

Just a few thoughts I took the time to write down while reading:

Spending time in 18th century Paris with a young Alex is so much fun. And getting to see just how he met the Earl of Highbury, one of my favorite characters from the Jacobite Chronicles and its side stories, has been so endearing, I don’t think I realized how much I actually needed this.

William, Earl of Highbury, is definitely a top contender for Book Boyfriend. I thought so before, but so much time with him uninterrupted has been delightful. And the relationship he found with Alex is heartwarming, if a little sad because William deserves a son such as Alex, and not the twat Daniel.

And the foreshadowing/parallels between Jeanne the prostitute whom Alex knows inherently not to trust with information that matters because she might betray him, and Jeannie back home knowing what she does in just a few years (and in turn what Kenneth must do because of her actions) caught me by surprise; I was in the shower just thinking about what I’d read and how much I enjoy Julia Brannan’s writing, and the similarities hit me. Both women knew they were beautiful, but neither realized in time how much more beautiful they appeared to be because of the small village, or clan in Jeannie’s case, in which they lived. They both aspired for so much more than what their lives could offer them; and while I’ve not seen Jeanne’s name in several chapters, I do know what those high aspirations landed Jeannie.

Last words I promise - I’ve got a headache still or again idk and am not taking the time to check for mistakes, so forgive any glaring errors please.

Alex MacGregor is now a young student at a Catholic university in Paris and working to fulfill his father’s wishes for him to get an education to prepare him to be able to interact with nobility (Hanoverian Court) and hopefully the Stuarts exiled in Rome. What has been a lonely and desperately homesick existence for Alex, becomes an adventurous and fulfilling, as he meets new people, forges strong friendships and grows into adulthood with profoundly life altering experiences, enriching his education and life. The tapestry of this tale is impeccably written and made me happy to reconnect with the characters from Julia’s Jacobite Chronicles. If you have not as yet read this series you simply must, especially if you’ve become an avid reader of stories woven from the events and historic record about the Jacobite/Jacobite’s cause, those who supported them and their compelling history. This story transported me to places I have visited, Rome, Paris, Glasgow, the Scottish Highlands, and is richly written and allowed me to imagine those places in the time period Brannan writes about as to what I know of them currently.

Masterfully and beautifully written, well worth the wait for the background story of how Sir Anthony came to be. As with every book in The Jacobite Chronicles and Brannan’s side novels, which focus on other central characters, her attention to historic accuracy (which means I go on searches to learn; is this true and yes, it is!) is impeccable. Julia weaves a story that flows easily and makes, for me, one of those experiences in reading of a can’t put it down book.

The Baronet’s Tale: Anthony Part 1 has given me this and I’m expectantly and impatiently awaiting Part 2 and getting to reconnect with Alex MacGregor, his family (clan) and his newly found friends (family).

I have read and loved all of Julia’s novels. For me, the background stories are my favorite part of the series. I love reading about the past events in the characters from the main series. It’s like sitting down for a cup of tea with old friends. I was delighted when Harriet is mentioned several times. She is one of my most loved characters. Julia writes so beautifully that all the characters are well developed and believable. I am very much looking forward to Anthony part 2.

I truly enjoyed the entire Jacobite Chronicles series but this book is my favorite. It was very entertaining and met my need for more information about Alex, his clan and some of the back story of how and why he became Sir Anthony. It was wonderful to learn more about his benefactor and his time at university. I am excited to re-read the other books in the series for the third or fourth time after reading this one. Thank you, Julia!

As are all the others, this part of the story is vivid. It sets the stage for Sir Anthony's appearance, relates Alex's grand tour through Europe, and explains his close relationship with Lord William Highbury. It also paints a more complete picture of highland life than we have seen before and illustrates the relationships within the McGregors Clan. I wish these books would never end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating backstory to the Jacobite Chronicles series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 6, 2024
I first discovered Julia Brannan's books when I downloaded Mask of Duplicity - the first book fo the Jacobite Chronicles - as a freebie for my Kobo (found via Bookbub). I read a lot of "first in a series" free books and it's very rare for them to captivate me enough to make me want to invest in the rest of the series, but in this case I did - even though it meant moving across from Kobo to Kindle to do so - and haven't regretted it.

The central series consists of six books, but since writing those, Julia has also written detailed backstories of several of the characters, which are complete novels in themselves. This one is part 2 of the backstory of Alex, the lead male character in the Chronicles. (Part 1 is The Highlander's Tale and should really be read before this one.)

The backstories are every bit as enjoyable as the main series and it's fascinating to re-read the main series with a different, richer understanding of the characters and their motivations.

Great for Outlander fans (Diana Gabaldon herself has recommended the Jacobite Chronicles on her "methadone list"), albeit without the time travel element - and if you find the Outlander books a little hard going then these ones are an easier read, so give them a try!

Hilfe, wann kommt Teil 2?
