Aftermath (Ever After Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 163 ratings

The Ever After series concludes in Aftermath. Tragedy, redemption, love… Ever After

Once upon a time, Casey flirted with a pretty boy at a bar, and that changed everything. Recently released from jail, he’s starting to rebuild without the family who raised him to hate himself. He’s got a new job, a room at his aunt’s, and community service hours at an LGBTQIA community center. But his biggest challenge is figuring out how to live as the one thing his father and brother drilled into him he could never be: a gay man.

Once upon a time, Brooks was a confident Dom with a particular taste for bigger men. But since his run-in with a dangerous homophobe, he’s lost his touch. Big, buff guys are hot but scary, and hurting people isn’t as much fun as it used to be.

Until he meets Casey, the big guy with the problematic past. Casey’s willing to do anything, but does his submission stem from healthy kink or from an unhealthy need to be punished? And is Brooks doling out release or revenge? Two people who share a past as violent as theirs could never fall in love. Unless, somewhere in the aftermath, there’s forgiveness.

Content warning: internalized homophobia, homophobic language, and references to homophobic hate crimes that have occurred in the past

Aftermath is the perfect title for this book, because the aftermath created a major book hangover. I love the Ever After series and am incredibly saddened to see it end but only Tanya Chris could deliver that perfect of an ending.

Having followed from the beginning, it was hard to imagine Casey’s story and how it could even play out. I am certain that only this author could make it work. The character development is so well done; I felt these characters—their pain, their complexity, just everything about it. One of my favorite aspects is Tanya Chris’ ability to give depth to not just the main characters but secondary as well. It pulls me in even more. The world building was intricate and vivid; I couldn’t put this book down.

The story itself is so layered, with complexity and major themes running through it and yet it all works. The author definitely keeps an original premise and pushes boundaries. Yet it is so important. While I read this book in one sitting, it definitely left an impact on me that I’ll carry forever. There is nothing that comes across as unnecessary in this book. Each word appears carefully chosen and it’s a delight to read. Most of all, this is a book that made me feel. I admit there was definite ugly crying going on. It’s books that pull so strongly on my emotions that I love and this one more than delivered. This story left me breathless with the magic the author weaved. This series has been a must read and this book is a perfect ending to it.

5+ stars for a compelling, breathtaking and emotional read.

    P.S. I’d love to see Finn’s story!

This is the third and final installment in the Ever After series. There was a lot I really loved about this book and some parts that I really struggled with. I loved both the MCs and the journey Tanya brought us on as they fought through pretty unimaginable issues to reach a happy ending. Casey is the brother of the man who killed two gay men, basically because he knew Casey was gay. Brooks was one of the men they attacked but who got away, though his ability to enjoy dominating bigger men has been ruined by the attack. Although Casey didn't hit anyone, he was there and he didn't stop his brother. So the journey for Casey (after his prison sentence) includes accepting that he's gay and fighting through the internalized homophobia from his brother and father, gaining the strength to come out publicly, and making amends for what he did. That's a lot to work through! Especially as the man Casey wants is Brooks, who was attacked because he was just slightly flirting with Casey. Brooks has to work through his issues stemming from his PTSD symptoms from the attack and how that keeps him from enjoying his kink as well as anger with Casey specifically. The way they work through Casey atoning for what happened with Brooks is what I find a little disturbing, though my heart breaks for both of them. I can't say whether this would be realistic or not, but I appreciated Tanya's clearly showing them working through many stages to get to their happy ending. Overall I enjoyed this book and felt really happy that they were able to figure out how to get past so many issues to be happy together.

Great story and great, heartfelt, perfect writing like always from this author. I bought the series and read the first two stories a while ago. They are pretty emotionally powerful, and one of the MMCs in this story was a villain (and victim) in the last one. I decided I needed some distance before I was ready to forgive him enough to let him have a happy ending, so I forgot about reading this one for a bit. I’m glad I picked it up again, because it’s a great story, with two wonderful and lovable MMCs.

I love this series. I love how Tayna Chris writes. I love getting lost in her stories. I was so excited to see this book. This is Casey's story. Casey went against his family and testified against his brother. Now Casey's out of jail and trying to find his way with his father's and brothers words still in his head. This is a beautiful and hard journey for Casey. So very good.

Casey comes across as sweet but we've meet him in previous books and his actions were awful. The fact that he felt powerless was not really enough to absolve him and in this book he struggles to find his own responsibility for the situations he found himself in.

Brooks was severely impacted by being attacked by MJ and Casey (as anyone would be!) This book is about both Casey and Brooks coming to terms with who they were then and who they are now. I thought the descriptions of Casey's submissive needs were very well done. I liked how the men interacted. I liked a lot of the story even though it felt difficult to me. This is not a stand a lone piece, you need to read the previous books to fully understand what is happening here. I really like Tanya Chris' writting and the characters she creates.

I knew Tanya Chris would give Casey redemption, but she managed it even more skillfully than I imagined. His path is not a simple one, but it's beautiful as he navigates owning his sexuality, his actions, and his life.
Even if he and Brooks had not ended up together, I would have been satisfied with this book because the journey with Casey is so captivating and poignant.

This book could be read as a standalone,, I suppose, but for the most enjoyment, start at the beginning with Aftercare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific conclusion to m/m series

When I started reading the first book in this series I didn’t not expect the way it would end, with three happy couples. In fact I would have bet against this last couple. But Tanya Chris has written it so well and so convincingly that it seems very true to life. I enjoyed this series highly although I recommend you only read it if you are open minded about sex and kinks. If you are then I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Really enjoyed this book. Took me a chapter or two to get back into the series but I remembered them all fairly quickly and was really rooting for Casey to finally get his happily ever after. Well written, emotional and extremely easy to read. Really liked Brooks and was glad him and Casey actually got their chance. A great read.

The main characters were well developed and worked well together. The dynamic was well done and I appreciated the representation of bdsm in the novel.
