The Obsession: A Dark College Forced Proximity MM Romance Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars 61 ratings

Falling for his roommate was never part of the plan…but neither was becoming the object of his obsession.

Tristan Tolken spent years surviving. Haunted by trauma, ashamed of who he is, and clinging to rituals that make life bearable, he’s perfected the art of being invisible. No one touches him. No one sees him. Until Collin Stanley walks into his dorm room—easygoing, brilliant, beautiful Collin. And everything unravals.

Collin Stanley doesn’t expect to be drawn to his new roommate. But as Collin peels back Tristan’s defenses, he discovers a troubled soul. A talented artist with a haunted stare and a heart that flinches at kindness.

As Collin pulls Tristan into the light, they’ll both have to face the truth. Healing isn’t linear, and the line between obsession and love is thinner than either of them expects.

The Obsession is a raw, emotional roommates-to-lovers standalone dark MM romance set in Santa Barbara, California. It features a tortured artist with a secret compulsion, a psychology student determined to help, and a scorching exploration of vulnerability, healing, and first love.
Dive into this deeply emotional, intensely passionate romance today.

Christie Gordon is the author of steamy, heartfelt gay romance novels that explore the emotional journey of men discovering themselves and finding love. It all started when she stumbled upon MM fanfiction by accident—and let's just say, it was love at first read. Inspired by the genre's mix of passion and complexity, Christie transitioned from reading about men in love to writing her own stories. After taking fiction writing classes at a local community college, she published her first MM romance novel in 2009 with a small press, and she’s never looked back.

When she’s not writing, Christie watches boys-love dramas, creates digital art, or is serenaded by her snoring one-eyed rescue pug. A graduate of both Electrical Engineering (BS) and Business Administration (MBA), she spends her "day job" navigating the high-tech world, but her heart belongs to the characters who live in her books. Christie currently resides in the Phoenix metro area, though she’s also lived in California’s Bay Area and Minnesota (which probably explains her deep love of pumpkin spiced latte coffees and hockey).

She’s also the proud mother of two young-adult sons who provide plenty of material for stories—usually in the form of chaotic shenanigans. But no matter what, Christie’s always up for a new adventure, whether it's on the page or in the real world.

Intensely emotional and raw. Those were the first words that came to mind when I began writing this review. As I reflected deeper, I realized there is also beauty to the pain in these characters and their story. Two insanely hot, exceptionally smart, talented, very damaged men finding one another and finding a road to mutual healing.

I was uncomfortable from almost the start. Maybe because of my own age and experience, I was suspicious of the seemingly coincidental roommate situation from the very beginning. Collin’s suspicious secrecy about his thesis and his relationship with Jessica only increased my anxiety. Tristan’s desperation for love and acceptance blind him to things he should have demanded answers to rather than justifying away.

Have I been confusing enough or are you intrigued? You see Tristan is a moody, severely introverted, art major with an extremely abusive background. His abuse has led him to an unconventional addiction.

Collin is a prodigy psychology major working on his master’s thesis. When Collin suddenly appears at Tristan’s dorm room to announce he’s Tristan’s new roommate, Tristan is overwhelmed. He’s been crushing on the beautiful, auburn haired man since day one of their shared Sociology class. But roommates? How will he ever keep his addiction secret?

The mysterious Jessica? Read it and find out. Yes, it could be called a dark book, but as with any good storm, the light breaks through when it’s over. So in the end? I found it joyous. I found hope anew.

I wasn't sure how I was feeling about this one at first but I eventually found myself getting into the story. It is a bit dark and emotionally charged but I did enjoy reading it.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

So, this is my first Christie Gordon book and review and I am in love. Tristan and Collin were truly opposites on the personality scale and yet it worked. I must admit that I was constantly on edge with Tristan as Collin bombarded his way into Tristan’s life and turned it upside down and yanked him (and me) back and forth. Their love was a whirlwind that I got caught up in and although the main subject theme of the story seemed to be about the “sex addiction” Tristan has for me the real underlying problem was really Collin and him wanting to fix Tristan. I don’t want to give too many details for fear of giving any spoilers but I truly loved the storyline and now that I know the twist and turns I can settle back and really get into it (I started reread yesterday). This book will have you on edge trying to figure out what Collin is really up to until you have an ah-ha moment but oh my goodness there is fire in this story and I loved every moment of it …don’t go pass go, pick this book up you’ll love.

Ok, so the book blurb is in first person but the book's narrative is in third person. It threw me off.
    A rushed HEA
Steam level 3/5 in the beginning and toward the end it just fell off somehow. And it was a strict top and bottom role. Collin top. Tristan bottom. Tristan did say he wanted to top Collin but Collin blew that off.
I didn't really like Collin. He gas lit the hell out of Tristan, and then ignored or blew off heart felt things Tristan wanted or said, and with the twist idk if it was because he was being a deceitful and felt bad about it or what. I have no idea how their relation could heal and move forward because the end was rushed........
This does deal with a sort of addiction and Tristan's past abuse.
Hurt/comfort kind of if Collin wasn't being a lying, manipulating, control freak.

The story has a good premise, but Colin was horrible to Tristan throughout the book. There were no redeeming qualities to him, in my opinion. The way Colin and Jessica treated Tristan was just cruel. It would have helped if Tristan would have not been gaslighted continually. I don’t think Tristan should have taken him back at all.

It was not hard to feel for Tristan. He is aware of his compulsion and of the lack of support he gets from his mother. He is an introvert and in some ways trapped in something he needs help with but can't figure out how or who to out to reach to for help. And he feels invisible. Collin is a caring guy and a psychology major - which is great and not so great. Sometimes the folks most fascinated with fixing human behavior are fascinated because they too need a fix. That is kind of the case here. They wind up roommates and Collin does try to help Tristan. They have feelings for one another and in the end it turns out that each has vulnerabilities which they need to work on. This makes them make more sense for me and makes this not a he saved him kind of story but they both need to grow together and can because they will be there for one another. I liked the complexities in this relationship. made for an interesting story that I was eager to read as it unfolded and see where they would land.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was not an 'easy or fun' read.
It started out with so much hope for a smooth transition to a loving relationship.
I really waned Tristan to find someone who would love him.

Unfortunately he had a rough rocky spell ahead.
Collin seemed so perfect at the beginning.
But be careful what you wish for.

Something wasn't right shortly after Collin was 'assigned' to be Tristan's roommate. And I got just got more and more uneasy as the book progressed.

Until, at last, clues were revealed.
    Trust was built.
    Love was there.

    And I could breathe again.
Be ready for a story fraught with pain and sorrow until all is revealed.

Another example of the great story telling of Christie Gordon.

MM, Sexual awakening, Roommates to Lovers, College, Dark Contemporary, Romance. Standalone read full of angst, steam and twists and turns. I become very invested in the lives of Tristan and Colin very quickly and had a love one hate the other relationship for most of the book. Guaranteed HEA.
