Excerpt from Cleopatra's Mystery Box
‘Put your hand inside my box and tell me what you feel.’
It was the first time Cleopatra had invited Andrew back to her house. Her father was out west on a field trip, tracking desert lizards, and her mother and younger sister were down the coast for the weekend. They were sitting on her bed, he cross-legged at the foot, and she nestled at the head in a cloud of velvet and patchwork cushions. Her Egyptian eyes watched him intently and her porcelain face was so stern it simply had to be fighting back a smile.
‘Is this foreplay?’ he asked, hoping to make her crack.
She pursed her purple lips.
‘It’s a game,’ she said eventually.
‘What kind of game?’
‘My game.’
‘So, you’ve played it before?’
‘Well, it wouldn’t be my game if I hadn’t, would it?’ She frowned. ‘You can ask pointless questions or you can play. It’s up to you.’
‘I want to play.’
‘Just put your hand inside and tell me what you feel. If you guess correctly, you can ask me to do something for you.’
He stared into her dark brown eyes, full of childish mischief and timeless mystery, then dropped his gaze to the box in her hands.
"The thirteen stories included in the book will be ones you remember, and that, friends, is a sign of a good short story collection...If this is your first taste of Cameron Trost, you've come to the right place. I will remember the name." - Bruce Blanchard, Goodreads

- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis collection opens with “Cleopatra’s Mystery Box,” in which Cleopatra asks her lover to reach into her mystery box and tell her what he feels. She will reward him if he guesses correctly. The story is sexy, creepy and enthralling.
And that’s just the beginning. This is a fascinating collection of creepy tales, sometimes dealing with animals like cats, crows or dogs, and sometimes dealing with the human animals. All the stories have an eerie touch and some have bizarre premises that Mr. Trost makes entirely believable. Some leave the reader with disturbing questions about life. All are good reads.
I enjoyed most of the stories and it’s tough to choose a favorite, but I would go with “It Starts with Insects,” which open with a young boy from a violent home analyzing the behavior of ants and beetles.
Creepy.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseInteresting group of stories involving human/animal horror. The stories were tight, well written and suspenseful. Some might find some of the stories a little edgy as they stray into species dysphoria, but there was nothing too explicit or disgusting. All in all, a very good read. Perfect for readers who have a little time to read (allowing for the completion of one story within a setting. Recommended reading for those into animalistic horror.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strange tales indeed.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book is full of strange stories unlike any others I have read before. Cameron surely has a vivid imagination, even what I would call a twisted imagination. But his stories are very enjoyable. I really loved reading them. I can thoroughly recommend this book.
