The Au Pair: a gripping psychological thriller Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,301 ratings

The Davidsons seem like a normal family. But they do have one little secret…

American student Alice Snyder was excited to be spending the summer in Scotland, working as an au pair for the Davidson family at their remote lodge. But one month after she arrived, Alice disappeared without trace.

Now the new au pair, Melanie, has arrived - and soon notices that the Davidsons are a bit odd. There’s the strange comings and goings at night, the creepy paying guests, and sinister uncle Gray who makes her flesh crawl.

And then there’s the worrying scratch marks on the floor of the au pair’s bedroom. Did Alice try to barricade herself in? What could she have been so afraid of? Are the Davidsons somehow linked to her disappearance? And is Melanie herself now in danger?

As she desperately tries to find out what happened to Alice, Melanie begins to understand that this old house harbours a truly horrifying secret. Alice was its last victim, but she might be its next…

The Au Pair – the chilling psychological thriller from the best-selling author of The Stepson and The Child Who Never Was.

I hesitated over 4-5* for a bit because I'm very stingy when giving 5 but had to for this one. It's a bit slow at parts and I swear there's an oops on the dates towards the end but nothing major. The action parts and twists are well done and the ending was amazing!! So I had to do 5 just for it being mostly an amazing read. Recommend to all

Riveting story that was difficult to figure out. Hard to tell who was the bad guy - or guys. Loved the ending.

While the plot is interesting and indicative of a great thriller, the execution is lacking for my taste. I wish the beginning of the book had as much momentum as the last third.

The premise of the book, The Au Pair, is great. A freshly hired Au Pair for the Davidson’s, Alice Snyder, travels from America to Scotland and goes missing after 1 month on the job. A second Au Pair, Donna McKenzie aka Melanie Macfarlane, is quickly hired to fill the vacancy. But Donna is hiding something. As she starts to look into Alice’s disappearance, secrets unfold surrounding Donna, Alice and the family they are working for.

I was not at all invested in the characters. I did not feel a connection until nearly the end of the book and it was a weak one. The Davidson family was odd. I wanted to find out what they were all about, but at the same time their stories were disjointed and not well developed. The end of the book seemed to have all the information but felt like it was dumped on the reader. I would have preferred a more gradual unraveling to keep me more interested and engaged.

Overall, I would describe this book as fizzling in and out. There were definitely some “ah ha” moments but I was not engaged as much as I like to be when reading a gripping thriller. I would have liked to have felt more of a connection to the characters and their fates. The ending was a cliff hanger which I am still deciding whether I liked that aspect or not. I would have liked a bit more clarity in the end. I don’t want to give anything away here but I have lingering questions.

The villains were beyond horrible, it was if sometimes you couldn't breath at the horror. Thank goodness it ended well but, you were hooked by the journey.

I love this author! She has a masterful ability to bring characters to life, and I'm not sure how she does it, but it's a great gift that she shares with us readers. And the suspense! Wow, so gripping, a must-read!
