The Dare Club Kindle Edition
When four very different people meet at a Lift Up course for the newly divorced or separated, there are initial tensions. Aleysha hasn’t accepted the fact that her seven-month marriage is over. Nick is struggling with being a single parent. Colette is still dealing with the health problems that caused her husband to walk out on her, and Emma is a dumper, while the others are dumpees. As the group get to know each other, Colette suggests they start a dare club. If they’re cavorting several metres off the ground, or standing under a spotlight, it’s bound to help them to forget about their troubles, isn’t it? At the very least, they’ll have some fun, and who knows? It might just change their lives forever.
Reviews for The Dare Club:
"I loved this book. The four very different main characters meet at a group to help people recover from relationship breakdowns and embark on a series of adventures together. They came to life for me as I read about their ups and downs and by the end of the story, I felt as if the characters were not only friends with each other, but also with me. I had laughed with them, worried about them and cried tears of joy for them."
"The Dare Club was a fantastic read and I was gripped from the start! Lots of twists and turns and a variety of characters. Highly recommended!"
"I love a book I can get straight into and the clever introduction to the people made them instant friends and companions. I loved the twists and turns and build-up which picks up a real pace as their crazy lives intertwine and their friendships grow. A thoroughly enjoyable read."

- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2013I really enjoyed this second offering from Margaret K Johnson. Her first book The Goddess Workshop is fabulous and with this new novel she has again sprinkled the chick lit fairy dust, leaving a really satisfying feel-good factor with every chapter.
Emma, Colette, Nick and Aleysha meet on a course for getting over relationship breakups. Colette is recovering from cancer and her husbands shocking reaction to her illness. Nick has two young children to care for as well as a full time job since his wife dumped him and their children to 'find herself' in Australia. Aleysha's husband left her after only a few months of marriage leaving her devastated and bewildered and Emma is getting to grips with leaving her own marriage and wondering if she has done the right thing. Their stories are all very different but they quickly form a friendship group and decide they need some challenge in their lives. So the Dare Club is born. Facing challenges which range from gatecrashing parties and running away from policemen to stand up comedy and roller coasters, they start to put their lives back together. All enjoying themselves immensely along the way.
With true to life characters, a fun storyline and the ability to make you feel part of the gang, Margaret K Johnson has written a novel every woman will enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2013Emma joins an evening class for newly separated people. There, she meets Colette, Nick and Aleysha, and this unlikely group of friends very tentatively start to bond over a drink in the pub afterwards. Although, like the others, Emma is no longer living with her partner, her situation is slightly different to theirs and she wonders what they’ll think of her when they find out the circumstances of her separation.
Right from the start these characters leap off the page as living, breathing people. Aleysha, young and vulnerable, devastated that her marriage disintegrated so soon after her fairy-tale wedding. Colette, determined to recover from a recent serious illness and the heartlessness of her spineless husband. Nick, struggling to look after his two young children while their mother swans off to Australia to find herself. Emma, a mother and grandmother, who has just made a very difficult decision.
They all have regrets, they’ve all made mistakes, and they’re all about to make a few more. The Dare Club explores how each character grows through these experiences. Their errors in judgement really make you feel for them, and their successes make you want to applaud and cheer. While the overall tone of the book is upbeat, scenes that depict serious issues are successfully interspersed with scenes that are pure light-hearted folly.
Part of me would have liked all four characters to be involved in all of the dares, but I think the choice of dares is great. Those readers who have been following Margaret Johnson’s own daring exploits will enjoy seeing how she’s developed them in the plot, and those who haven’t will enjoy them anyway.
As demonstrated in her previous book, The Goddess Workshop, Margaret Johnson is wonderfully skilled at describing the bonds that are formed and the sparks that fly when a small group of strangers is brought together. I look forward to her next book.
I’d like to thank the author for sending me an advance review copy of this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2013I loved the premise of The Dare Club - a group of very different people who meet at a Lift Up course for divorced or separated people and become embroiled in each others lives - daring each other to face their fears in a variety of ways in order to overcome heartbreak and emotional turmoil. Very well written, it is also very real - the characters are people we can relate to - in fact, by the end of our journey with them, they feel more like friends too. Nick was my favourite character, followed by Emma, but all of them are very well-drawn. There are some touching moments throughout also - again, regarding situations the reader can easily identify with. This is a choral story, not quite a romance although there is romance in it, it is more contemporary fiction. I loved the multi-points of view, it kept things interesting and the fact that the author researched deeply for various 'dares' including performing stand-up comedy herself - research like that shows. Highly recommended.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2014Johnson pulls together a group of four very different characters, all of whom are trying to change their lives for the better, and shows them interacting in unpredictable ways. The exploits of the Dare Club keep the plot moving briskly along, but this is more than a fun read. It is also a poignant and possibly instructive one, of value to anyone looking for inspiration to change their own circumstances.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2015A group of newly singletons attend a course to help them deal with their relationship break-ups. Aleysha, Nick, Colette and Emma all met on the course and bond and decided to swap their broken hearts for brave hearts as they set each other challenges to overcome their fears, by forming a dare club.
I really enjoyed getting to know all the characters in this book and learning about all their different background and individual stories that had resulted in them all ending up meeting at a crossroads in their lives, each character as their own issues to deal with and overcome. I also liked the way that new friendships were formed out of the difficult circumstances. It is a story of moving on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Read!
After reading Margaret Johnson's previous book (the Goddess Workshop) I couldn't wait to get my hands on this. I'm glad I had a couple of days free because I couldn't put it down. Like the Goddess Workshop this is a very original story with great characters. I found it refreshing that one of the major characters is a man, and his predicament added a different perspective to the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this and would recommend it to anybody - I think men might enjoy this too!

4.0 out of 5 stars A little gem.
I bought this book not knowing what to expect. After the first few chapters I became quite interested in the different characters and where their story would go. Each one had a different experience and yet they were all linked. The author has touched on some difficult subjec matter yet has delivered them with sensitivity and humour. I will definitely suggest this book to my friends, and recommend it as a excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'The Dare Club' by Margaret K Johnson
‘The Dare Club’ – Margaret K Johnson
I first read this book a couple of years ago; so on opening the file again on my kindle, I was relieved to discover that the writing has lost none of its charm, and that the characters and situations are convincing, endearing and well drawn.
t becomes ever more challenging to me, to find writers that I can not only empathise with – being an author, I do empathise with a great many authors – but whose work has the ability to take my away from my everyday concerns. Call me an escapist fool, but there are times in my life when I need the suspension of my reality, and sometimes more than ever. Yet, in the past decade, I have morphed from a straight-forward reader to an author with ten years editing experience, so it becomes increasingly challenging to find a book I can read wholeheartedly, without feeling the dire necessity of assuming my ‘editor’ hat and itching to rewrite or rephrase…
Thankfully, ‘The Dare Club’ is such a book, and as I read it I heaved a sigh of relief for Margaret’s sympathetic writing, her careful editing and her attention to detail. I can recommend this book to all readers wanting a bit of fun, a bit of vicarious adventure and a few ‘There but for the grace of God’ moments too. It takes a rare book to both entertain and humour me, as well as reminding me of all the privileges I enjoy in my life.
Thank you Margaret.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!
After reading Margaret's first novel, The Goddess Workshop, I was excited to get hold of her next one, The Dare Club. It didn't disappoint.
Each of the four main characters had their different issues and personalities, and they were easy to relate to real life characters making them all the more plausible. The twists and turns in the plot made for an excellent read.
Will definitely recommend to family and friends!
