- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2021Can I just say...woahhh E. Reyes, I was caught off guard! I had NO IDEA I was in for a wild and GRUESOME ride! Haha.
I downloaded the e-book since the author had it listed free for a limited time and thought I'd check it out. I didn't even read the sypnosis or other reviews so I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I remember pausing during the first story and actually laughing out loud thinking "wow looks like I need to buckle in my seatbelt for this one" lol. It was actually a pleasant surprise since I thoroughly enjoyed each and every story. Gallons of blood and gore to go with such entertaining horror stories.
This book has it all. From sweet revenge to menacing creatures, the living dead, black magic, slashers and more! It's the perfect Halloween anthology for those who love a variety of creepy stories mixed in with lots of body horror. Definitely a good collection to reread every Halloween. E. Reyes has definitely caught my attention and has left me thirsty for more!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2021Review of “Halloween Grindhouse : An anthology by E. Reyes”
This was the new book I started for the New Year. I wanted to start it with a little Halloween spirit after the crazy year of 2020. Halloween is a state of mind, right? Let’s read it all year! I was pleased that this anthology had a story connecting all the other stories which I really loved! Something like “Treat or Treat” but with a Grindhouse gritty new age feel to it.
The story starts off with a group of teens on Halloween night using this “Randocation” app to take them to a haunted house. No big deal , right? Everyone is using it and hasn't died or anything. It’s all just for a little spooky fun. When they arrive, they are met with an old box TV with VHS tapes. I can only imagine them being some kind of black and white underground low budget files. They are labeled Halloween #1, #2 and so on. So the group decides to have a little Halloween movie night courtesy of the “Randocation” app.
Each movie had a different twist that I loved but of course with any anthology or short story collections there are so I love more than others. My favorites were The Girl, Herbert’s Halloween and The Slasher. I love how every story ended in a twisted messed up way that I wasn’t expecting. The only thing I didn’t like was the lack of connection to the characters , which I feel is hard to do in short stories but can be done , and the little bit of foreshadowing in the beginning. I am not big on foreshadowing because I’d rather be surprised. Only in very few cases has foreshadowing work for me. All in all I’d say this is a pretty solid collection for a fun gory Halloween read! I also enjoyed the Foreword and Behind the Scenes for this book and I think more short stories and anthologies should include that. I really enjoy finding out what inspires the author’s stories. I gave this 4 ⭐️.
And for the nit-picky people there are a few typos but that didn’t hinder my reading experience.
Thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2024Some really hard-core Halloween tales here. Most of the evil-doers get justice served to them which is good because they certainly deserved it. Reading The Ranch gave me the creeps, but even more so that it is based on a real person. When I remember crossing the Mexican border in Matamoros in the late 1970's I wonder if I could have been in any danger back then?
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021Four friends, bored on Halloween night, decide to try out a new app that sends you to a random spooky location. They find themselves in a supposedly haunted house, but it's not ghosts they need to be afraid of. In one room, they find a long couch, a TV, VCR, and four VHS tapes labeled simply 'Halloween'.
Each tape they watch - grindhouse snuff films, violence and gore with supernatural twists - becomes a short story in the book, with "intermissions" in between to show us the four friends as they become increasingly uncomfortable with what they're seeing.
Story #1 - 'The Ranch' takes Mexican drug cartels and torture videos and mixes them up with....zombies.
Story #2 - 'The Girl' tells the tale of another group of friends bored on Halloween night, and the haunted house of horror they get themselves into.
Story #3 - 'Mischief' is the story of four young guys on Mischief Night who get their comeuppance when an insane evil entity gives them a taste of their own medicine.
Story #4 - 'Herbert's Halloween' - the best story of the bunch in my opinion - has a gross middle aged man who has catfished and kidnapped a teenage girl to be his "wife". She must escape his torments (and his grandmother, *shudder*) if she wants to live.
The final story - 'Slasher' - pits the four friends themselves against the maniac who set this whole thing up.
And now for a mixed bag of review points: this is my third book by Reyes, and probably my favorite so far. I like the set up with the films each being a story. The stories themselves are imaginative and truly horrific. All good things. However, as with everything I've read by Reyes, the book lacks good editing, or, truthfully, even basic proofreading. Misspelled words, improper use of punctuation, continuity errors, some stilted dialogue... a few things may be down to personal style but most of the oversights are basic things that should never have made it to a finished manuscript. For example: using the word 'distinguished' when he meant 'extinguished'; misspelling John Wayne Gacy's name; calling a car a 'Volts Wagon'; using the wrong name for a character in a single line of the story. HOWEVER... I have read that the author is having all his manuscripts edited now and is planning to release new edited versions of each of his books.
Reyes' work is great horror. I love the look of his books: he's obviously put a lot of work and thought into cover art and the graphics and layout of his books and I especially love how all his cover have a similar look and go well together on the shelf. Once this book is edited to make the writing more professional and give it a better flow, it will be one of the best Halloween collections out there.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021I’m a sucker for a great book cover, and saw this gem making its rounds on Instagram. The book is a series of tales gruesomely threaded together that take place on/around Halloween. I went into this knowing very little and enjoyed it all the more. A great book to add to any true horror fan’s collection. Will definitely be making this book a part of my Halloween re-read going forward. 💀

This book has some stories that are scary, its all connected to one. I normally enjoy horror books but gave 3 stars as this book contains a lot of slasher which was quite gruesome.
