The Missing White Lady: A 1920s Historical Mystery (Penelope Banks Murder Mysteries Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 2,436 ratings

Could a missing white cat be the key to solving this case?
New York, 1925

“My husband should be dead, but he isn’t.”

Penelope “Pen” Banks finally has what appears to be an interesting case for her fledgling investigative business. What she thought was a simple, tragic case of a wife abandonment has a rather daunting twist:

Jane Peterson’s husband isn’t where he’s supposed to be—dead in Wilmington.

Pen soon discovers that Frank Peterson isn’t the only missing resident from Winchester Court Apartments. Lady, the white-haired Persian cat of the Peterson’s neighbor—an ever-partying flapper—has also disappeared.

There are strange goings on at Winchester Court, which leads Penelope to believe the two are connected to something even bigger.

The Missing White Lady is the second book in the Penelope Banks Mystery series set in 1920s New York. The enjoyment of a historical mystery combined with the excitement and daring of New York during Prohibition and the Jazz Age.

Colette Clark lives in New York and has always enjoyed learning more about the history of her amazing city. She decided to combine that curiosity and love of learning with her addiction to reading and watching mysteries. Her first series, Penelope Banks Murder Mysteries is the result of those passions. When she’s not writing she can be found doing Sudoku puzzles, drawing, eating tacos, visiting museums dedicated to unusual/weird/wacky things, and, of course, reading mysteries by other great authors.

It's always a pleasure to discover a new author who knows how to write well. This certainly describes Colette Clark. It's easy to lose oneself in her stories: The mysteries are interesting, the characters are (mostly) well drawn, the pacing is good, and the plotting is sound.

So why only 4 stars? Well, I just can't like the main character, Penelope Banks.

First, I find it overly convenient that this 24-year-old woman is independently uber-wealthy, with a ritzy New York penthouse, butler, chauffer and millions of dollars, due to the lucky inheritance from a family friend. And, of course, she also comes from a wealthy family, so she's set up with prestigious connections, too. Frankly, I like a character who struggles just a bit - like the rest of us schlubs. (But that's just me.)

But beyond that, Penelope is such a hypocritical feminist! I'm all for lifting up women (I am one myself, after all), but I don't find it necessary to insult men to do so. There are numerous snide remarks and negative innuendoes about the general character of men that are frankly insulting. Yet at the same time, Pen has no problem being coy and flirty with Detective Prescott to manipulate getting her way. And she likes having the chauffer around so she "has a man to look out for her." Where's that feminism now? That's really just icky, you know?

There's also the caricature of her requisite gay friend, Benny, who never misses a scene to remind us that he bats for the other team. Really, who cares? His preference doesn't need a heavy hand, and it feels like his character is included to check a PC box or something. Other than that, Benny's character is fun to read. Hopefully this will mellow in future installments.

Penelope comes off as pushy, self-absorbed and self-satisfied, which certainly isn't very endearing. The only emotions we get from her are resentments toward her estranged father and flirty tingles toward Detective Prescott.

I want to like Penelope Banks. Not sure if I can, unless she finds a scrap of humility somewhere. This is someone who might be difficult to have as a friend in real life.

You'd think that looking for a missing husband would be enough for the new private investigator Penelope. But it's really the a search for a missing cat that leads to the real mystery. Great book. Lots of fun.

I love this author's style, intelligence and cunning wit. Which interestingly are all
attributes of the main character, cleverly nicknamed 'Pen' (hmm) manages to keep the reader entertained, remains highly engaging while solving every mystery in sight! I found this to be a fast-paced read that gets intense & then exciting then romantic! Wow! And just like Ginger Rogers, this author does it all in a skirt and heels! Colette Clark is now my new fave mystery writer. Thanks for indulging me while I fan-girl all over this author!

In the 1st book of this series, Penelope Banks was a wonderful character. Couldn't wait to read more of her adventures. Unfortunately, Book 2 is a let down. While I wanted to know about this missing husband and missing cat, too many boring characters (busybody in the building, seemingly weird guy, etc.) took up a great deal of Pen's time and my yawning. I'm glad I stuck with the story because Pen is still a worthwhile character, and her detective business will seem to grow. Hope the next book is more tightly written.
Oh, and why she only realizes she should have business cards near the end of the book puzzled me. In 1925, everyone had business cards for everything, especially in the upper-crust.

Penelope is a new character to follow, with a slightly different twist on early American criminal behavior. If the series is as good as this first book , it will be most enjoyable!

No the white lady isn’t a pale person or a mixed drink…it’s a cat…the feline is in the middle of two murders, a high level case of theft and she has five kittens to boot. How it all ties together is an intriguing tale for Penelope to unravel as she solves her first real case for her new detective agency! Join the fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Historical mystery

Penelope Banks is a private investigator, she has a client who's husband is missing. The missing husband case is also tied to a burglary of apartments in the same floor as the client. Then there is the case of the missing cat. Plenty of twisty bits and murder. I really enjoyed reading this book.

I enjoyed this book because it was fast paced and easy to read. Lots of twists and turns. Light and lovely. The only jarring note is, the author adding the word "no"?
At the end of some questions a character would ask.
On the whole - good read.

Lives can be led that are not what they seem. When secrets are found out money is demanded. Theft and murder occur.
