Dave Bench has spent most of his adult life working in the healthcare industry. He retired in May 2022 to devote more time to his music and writing. He developed a renewed interest in writing in 2015 after illustrating "The New Kid" - (a children’s book written by his wife, Liesl, in 1996.) Yes, he can be a bit of a procrastinator. He has since written and illustrated "Take Me to The Zoo!" and "Take Me to the Beach!" published under Bench Press Publishing through Lulu. Dave enjoys writing short stories—primarily speculative fiction. His novella "Hawking's Highway" was completed in late June of 2021, and his Sci-Fi murder mystery "In the Shadow of Oberon" was released in August 2022. His Sci-Fi epic "An Elegy for Fools" (completed in 2023) is the first in a trilogy. He’s also had his poetry published. When he’s not writing, Dave enjoys cooking, playing guitar and Hofner electric bass, and spending time with his family (which includes an African Gray parrot with an attitude). Dave lives in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains in Salt Lake City, Utah. You can find more at: www.benchpress-publishing.com.

The pictures in this volume are awesome! I thought they were fantastic and really brought the story to life. There isn't a lot of depth to the work: basically, a kid moves to a new town and is sad because he doesn't know anyone, and then he meets a few kids with similar backgrounds to him who also want to play baseball. But the point of the story isn't the depth, but rather than teaching tools that a parent can use, and this story has a lot of teachable moments in it that parents can use.

But, for a kid who is learning how to read, this story is excellent because it has a lot of simple words and short phrases. It's definitely a beginning book, but the pictures will be more than enough to really bring the story to life for any kid who is reading it.

As an army dad, I'm very familiar with what life is like for "military brats," or kids who get moved around every couple of years. This is a great book for families who end up moving due to their careers or family and need a way to give more confidence to their children. Pretty much every kid ever uprooted is going to worry about leaving old friends and making new ones. This book can help with that concern.
The artwork is also spot on. Illustrations take more time and effort than most readers realize and these were top notch.
    Overall a great job!

Randy is a young boy whose family is moving to a new neighborhood. After the chore of unpacking and settling in he is befriended by a neighbor kid named T.J. who instantly makes him feel welcomed. This story is great for children dealing with anxiety about moving and starting over in a new neighborhood. This is a cute story with colorful illustrations! A great read-out-loud book for parents and their children!

'The New Kid' by Liesl Bench is an entertaining read for young kids who are learning to read. Not only that, due to the content of the story it also makes for a very effective tool for parents who want to help their kids with relocation. Moving into a new house, in a new neighborhood, can be a daunting task for a lot of young kids, with them having to leave their friends behind, and other things they are accustomed to. The illustrations by Dave Bench also helps with making the story entertaining, and there is also racial diversity in the story, which is a good thing to have in children books.

"The New Kid" by Liesl Bench is an amazing gift for any young child, and for parents who want to help their kid cope with moving into a new house, and approaching and making new friends.

It can be unsettling and scary for a child to uprooted from their environment, school, friends, and move. This wonderfully crafted book by Leisl and Dave Bench is a handhold through the process of relocation, highlighting the adventure from a perspective of hope and fun. It is an important book for any child facing a move, or any child (young and old) who wants to read a lovely story that is illustrated beautifully. Books can serve two purposes: to entertain and educate. It is a really good book that does both. The New Kids does just that. It would make a great Christmas, birthday, fun-to-read, or relocation present for a child of any age. Looking forward to more from these authors.

This book could be a good 'social story' for a child with Aspergers as the bright pictures and clear story line show how a new transition can be easier than anticipated.
