The New Son Kindle Edition
Nina feels trapped. Her partner Gary is controlling, his daughter hates her, and she’s recently suffered a miscarriage. Just as her life seems hopeless, Alex, the son she gave up for adoption nearly 20 years ago, shows up at her door. Somehow, he has tracked her down.
Their reunion is everything Nina has hoped for. Now she has a child of her own, someone in the family who really cares about her.
But honeymoons are brief and this one is no exception.
Far from welcoming him, Gary is hostile to Alex and as their arguments become increasingly vicious, it soon becomes clear that Nina must choose between them.
But how will the abusive Gary react if she rejects him? And can she trust Alex? Is he really the loving son he seems to be – or does he have a sinister agenda of his own?
The New Son – the gripping psychological thriller perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Daniel Hurst, K L Slater.

About the author

Hello,
Well, here I am with a new novel, What Lies Inside. from Inkubator Books, out 16 June 2024; now available to pre-order.
Here's what the TV folk at AbbottVision had to say ...
'Combining the ingenuity of an Agatha Christie, the horror of Rillington Place and the wit of the best of British' ... 'in this crowded marketplace it’s hard to stand out but Iain Maitland has pulled off a masterstroke".
That sums it up really well.
This is the fifth thriller published by Inkubator Books following The Girl Downstairs and The Perfect Husband and The Soulmate and The New Son . Please do check them out.
Thanks for dropping by.
Iain

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2024“The New Son” is a really good novel about how a mother would do anything to protect her son. When Liam, Nina’s son that she was forced to put up for adoption, renters her life, she’s very excited & happy that he has found her. Nina has been longing for Liam since she gave him away & in the interim years has made a disaster of her life. Now, finally, everything is going right as she & Liam get to know each other as only a mother & son can as they catch up on all the years they’ve missed being together as a family. Unfortunately, disaster strikes & Nina is sure she made a terrible mistake letting Liam into her life as she questions if he really is her long lost son. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars is because it was off to a slow start for the first section of the novel. When things began to pick up in the second section, it was hard to put down & had an unexpected twist at the end that I never saw coming. I highly recommend “The New Son” to all Iain Maitlind fans despite the slow start at the beginning of the novel. If you pick up this book, you won’t be disappointed.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2024Nina has money, a house, is on leave from work to deal with a miscarriage ... a child she wanted. Then she thinks of the baby she had to give up, the one she had with her one true love.. She was living in her house, with her boyfriend Gary, and he was a real piece of work! Being an A-- would be an upgrade! I liked the tangled web of her son, trying to track him, find out what really happened, who his adoptive parents were... and it was nothing like that!
I liked the end of it, that was very worth what was coming!
The new son is a good story, however, it is repetitive, and almost like a mental ranting within Nina's mind, that's why I rated only 3 stars.
Thank you, Iain Maitland for a good story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2024This was definitely an intriguing story. It was interesting to see how easily manipulation can go and how easily a person can let themselves be manipulated. I actually felt anger that they could be so gullible. The ending was a surprise.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2024The author made these scenes alive through details since the character was not overly burdened with background information. Few story points did what was expected when making narrative conventions. However, events remained engaging. The ending took an unforeseen twist framed with an epilogue, which crystallized the character in that moment. This was my first read by this author; undoubtedly, it will not be the last.
Thank you to Inkubator Books, Zoé from ZooLoo’s Book Tours, and the author for allowing me to read and review this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2024The premise of this book sounded amazing, however I felt it landed flat. I didn’t really feel a connection, or depth with any of the characters. I felt there were so many good ways this thriller could go, but I didn’t feel pulled or that there were any real twists. It was a decent read, but not one I would highly recommend for its twists or thrilling plot line.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2024I loved this book. Its full of surprise and twists and turns. Very enjoyable and now I have a new author to read for psychological thrillers !
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2024I throughly enjoyed this book. Did not expect the ending it had. I think I found a new favorite author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Puzzled?
I really enjoyed this story until the ending as I was left confused as to what the epilogue was about also who it was about not sure if you had to draw your own conclusion

2.0 out of 5 stars Slow moving
I normally just leave stars, I don't comment a whole lot.
I found this hard to get through....I really had to push myself to finish it.
Nina was an actual doormat, a really unlikeable character and the plot wasn't great.

Absolute rubbish. How does drivel like this ever get published? Ridiculous plot, unbelievable characters. Even 99p is too much for it. Possibly the worst book I've ever read.
