The Quiet Achiever: Tiny habits to have impact at work (without pretending to be an extrovert) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

Get the promotion. Get your dream job. Get the appreciation and recognition you deserve — without pretending to be an extrovert.

Do you squirm in your seat when asked to introduce yourself? In meetings, do you keep quiet even though you have something to say? Does your boss often tell you to “speak up more,” but you’re not sure how?

If you answered yes, you might be a quiet achiever.

In a working world that favours the extrovert ideal, most role models and advice seem to be some flavour of "be more extroverted".

As a quiet achiever, you can try and fit into this extroverted mould to succeed at work. But the result is often the same: you're tired, drained; it feels like you are faking it. You think "maybe I'm just not good enough" and wonder how others make it look so easy.

There has to be a better way.

This book offers quiet achievers a different path to success, one where you can remain your true authentic self and still have impact at work (without pretending to be an extrovert).

In this book, you'll discover how to:

  • introduce yourself with confidence in meetings, interviews and networking
  • increase your visibility and be more seen and heard in your organisation
  • public speaking practises to communicate with purpose and clarity
  • handle difficult conversations and what to do when you receive feedback you don't like
  • speak up in meetings before you are ready and tactics to buy yourself time when put on the spot
  • how to say no (politely) set boundaries and push back on unreasonable requests
  • make small talk without the awkward silences
  • networking online and in real life
  • working better together with extroverts and ambiverts

Whether you are a senior leader or someone starting out; within the pages of this book, you'll find practical techniques you can implement the very next day.

Just because we are quiet does not mean we have nothing to say. Life is too short to be living someone else's version of success. Stop pretending. Start practicing. Your journey to making a big impact at work while staying true to yourself starts here.

If you are like me, looking to be true to yourself in a variety of situations, but hesitant and unsure of "How" this is for you! Tim Yoe has filled The Quiet Achiever with a wealth of easy-to-follow suggestions that make sense. Each time I try a suggestion I experience success that I am building on. If you've ever wondered if there's a different way to lead that doesn't require you to have an immediate answer and be rewarded for relentlessly socializing with others, pick up this book now. It shows you practical tiny habits to put into place so you can be more impactful at work while also letting you be yourself.

I could definitely relate to this book. Being an introvert, it was refreshing to hear that there are ways to succeed in business and life, even if you aren't comfortable giving speeches and socializing in crowds. It's a great book with plenty of tips for maximizing success and working with your introverted personality. Highly recommended!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone! I am an introvert and I related so much to this book. I found the tips in it super useful and straightforward. Even if you're extroverted, there's a lot of great tips that will help you improve your networking, leadership skills, conflict management, and public speaking skills. You'll gain a better understanding of introverted people and how they think and approach different situations. The tips presented are practical and they are laid out in a very organized way. I loved the real-life examples that made the tips come to life. It made me think back to previous situations I've had at work and how I could've handled things differently. Overall I'm so glad I read this book. I gained so many valuable tips that will make me more confident in areas at work that I avoided before.

Read the book and version and thoroughly enjoyed it — I could see myself in most of the examples (fellow designer here).

And even though I was doing most of the things on a very unconscious level, it helped bring some structure into the chaos.

If you’re an introvert who want to up their social/business game, this book will help.

Do you like reading Ikea instructions? I DO!

I loved reading them and follow them but my partner never even look at them. My partner is eloquent and words forms before their thoughts, while i have been struggling communicating myself to others. Not that i do not wish to communicate or socialise, it's more like that I haven't figure out a way to do so clearly and comfortably.

Tim's teaching in this book gives me the user manual to myself, at least for a chapter that named 'How to communicate effectively while having an introverted brain'.

Accompanied with relatable stories, practical tips and practices, now I have a better understanding to my own way of communication and practical tips to amplify the impact of what i what to say, to my friends, my lovers, my colleagues and anyone that i care about.

    HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unlocking the Power of Quiet: A Must-Read Guide for Extroverts Leading Introverted Teams
Reviewed in Singapore on November 8, 2024
As an extrovert, The Quiet Achiever by Tim Yeo was a fascinating and eye-opening read. Yeo skillfully dissects the strengths and nuances of introverts in the workplace, allowing extroverted leaders like myself to better understand and appreciate our introverted colleagues. He explains how introverts bring immense value through deep listening, thoughtful analysis, and a steady, grounded approach to problem-solving—qualities that can easily go unnoticed in louder environments.

Yeo also provides practical advice on how to create spaces where introverts can thrive without feeling pressured to perform as extroverts. I found the suggestions on fostering quieter team dynamics and encouraging one-on-one meetings particularly valuable. The book helped me realize the importance of balance in leadership and how to tap into the potential of quieter team members without pushing them beyond their comfort zones.

Overall, The Quiet Achiever is essential for anyone looking to build inclusive and high-performing teams. It’s insightful, compassionate, and filled with real-life examples that resonate. It’s a must-read for extroverts looking to bridge the gap and better support introverted colleagues.
