The Six and the Crystals of Ialana (The Ialana Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 87 ratings

"It is a story of honor, courage, friendship, and betrayal that goes beyond time. It unravels slowly and smoothly so that any reader can follow the plot easily." Maria Beltran, Reader's Favorite.

Six powerful teens. A shared nightmare. One last chance to save humanity…

On the fragmented continent of Ialana, war threatens. The population has fallen into ignorance and superstition. A band of six teens, each driven from their homes by fateful events, find themselves caught up in the destiny of a mutant race enslaved by a despotic ruler.

Jarah, the sensitive and insecure son of a Meadowfield baker, desires a more meaningful life than to take over the family business. Unexpectedly, he gets his wish when an army recruiter ransacks the town. Along with Adain, his good-looking friend, and Blaidd, his nemesis, he gets drafted into the king's army. One day they discover that Tristan, a soldier, is not who he seems to be.

On the other side of the continent, in a fabled city, Djana, a debutante is planning her coming-out ball. Little does she know of the fate soon to befall her and her family. In a hamlet closer to Meadowfield, 16-year-old Tegan must flee when the king's recruiters pillage her home, while in the frozen northern territory, a feral clan girl, Kex, chooses an uncertain fate over a forced marriage.

The Six find themselves guided by a shared dream, a nightmarish vision that leads them into dangerous and unknown territory. Pursued by implacable enemies, the fractured band, at odds with each other, must discover their purpose and find an artifact lost 500 years in the past.

Will the team's lack of cohesiveness result, once again, in the devastating failure of their mission, and the perpetual enslavement of a race of sentient beings?

The Six and the Crystals of Ialana is the first book in the Ialana YA epic fantasy series. If you like swords and sorcery, ensemble casts, and young heroes finding their way, then you’ll love Katlynn Brooke’s captivating adventure.

From the Author

The Six and the Crystals of Ialana is the first book in the Ialana Series. It is a stand-alone, but it is advisable to read the books in their recommended order for a greater understanding of the world of Ialana. It is also an introduction to the six main characters, and a few extra thrown in, so think of the first book as the foundation of the series.  I am often asked what the inspiration for this series was. Well, believe it or not -- dreams! I think some people are incurable dreamers, and I am one of them. I collect my most interesting dreams and get ideas for books and stories from them. And this, the first in the series, features a dream too. When the six main characters experience a shared dream, they know they must follow its direction, no matter where it leads, much as I have done with my books!  Besides the six main characters, I have shape-shifters, mutants, and some rather frightening creatures created by the misuse of crystal technology. Although not science-fiction, the concepts in the series border not only on sci-fi, but the metaphysical as well.

Growing up in Africa during the ’50’s and ’60’s, Katlynn Brooke’s childhood was an unusual one, even by African standards. While her city peers were learning how to dance to Chubby Checker’s The Twist or preparing for final exams, she was in a camper traveling through the bushveld penning plays and short stories for her family’s entertainment. Her father's job took him to out-of-the-way places, so Brooke was home-schooled when possible, or sent to a boarding school straight from of the pages of a Dickens book.

Her childhood has inspired a memoir, "Tea, Scones, and Malaria" that has also won a Firebird Award (2021) (Speak Up Talk Radio), and recently, a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree.

As an adult, her many travels took her to India and Indonesia, where she lived in both countries for several years before settling permanently in the United States. She now resides in Virginia with her husband, and a cat.

Brooke, always an avid and eclectic reader, is still inspired by authors such as Tolkien, Arthur C. Clark, and Terry Brooks. Influenced heavily by her past travels, she draws on her sojourns in foreign lands, and even her dreams, for out-of-the-ordinary settings, intrepid heroes, and the assertive heroines of her epic fantasy adventures.

The author throws a lot of characters at us in quick succession as she assembles her ensemble cast of unwilling adventurers, all fleeing persecution, all haunted by dreams and visions of things to come—the same dreams and visions. I thought for sure I’d never be able to keep track of all the names, but she does a masterful job of making the voices and personas distinct from one another, likable, and compelling. Once her team of six, Tristan, Kex, Jarah, Blaidd, Tegan, and Adain, are finally assembled on their quest, it’s fun to see the group dynamics take shape, to say nothing of witnessing the combustible chemistry between certain characters. The dangers and challenges continue to mount as the indefatigable group presses on, as much afraid of the vision that’s driving them as the nefarious parties out for their blood.

It is when the party meets up with Irusan, a magical figure who insists that the remarkable powers he demonstrates are not magic, but just evidence of his connection to the universal field of consciousness, using methods that he will teach them in time, that I truly fell in love with this book. I found Irusan’s way of accessing what in Star Wars would be known as “the force” and his way of explaining how to work with these energies both intuitive and compelling. It might just be pseudo-science to the skeptical, but I found it required less suspension of disbelief than most fantasy books.

It’s worth noting that the author has a real lock on the YA audience. This book reminds me of the series I read when I was a kid, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys; they were different genres to be certain, but it was the same sense of fun and adventure. The author writes in a very family-friendly manner; I could see this tale being enjoyed among an entire household as individual members took turns reading aloud for one another. One of the things which impressed me most was the author’s ability to play to such a wide age group. Like some of the best Disney flicks, and some of those Steven Spielberg films like E.T., Hook, and The Adventures of Tintin, there’s something here for almost any age. Because there is so much fleeing on foot from soldiers across vast distances and varied landscapes, always moving towards more powerful magic, perhaps the series this book is most structured like is Lord of the Rings, which is a good thing, being as this is a traditional fantasy.

To avoid giving away too much I’ll just say this: the richness of the tale, the various forms of paranormal abilities on display, both continue to compound throughout the story. Despite the very high standards the writer sets at the beginning of the story for herself, she continues to up her game with each turn of the page. Some standout characters (among many) for me (besides Irusan mentioned above): Djara, whose sixth sense guides the team out of danger in one instance without diminishing the tension in the scene one iota; Tegan, and her ability to psychically communicate with animal species. But by far my favorite element of this story, above and beyond the engrossing characters themselves and the fantastic magic they wield, was the fact that the heroes’ quest is carried out across many lifetimes. When we start out the story, in fact, it is with them struggling to integrate the dreams that are their first memories of their last lifetime together, and how things went horribly wrong that time. Will things go horribly wrong again? You’ll have to read to find out. As for me, I’m on to the sequel, as rapidly as I can finish this review!

"The Six and the Crystals of Ialana", written by Kaitlynn Brooke, is a brief, but solid fantasy fiction page-turner. Taking place in the fantasy land of Ialana, we follow along with the group of six main characters as they find and restore the lost crystals. The ensemble cast is very multi-faceted and each contains unique skills/personalities that we witness as the team works towards recovering all the hidden crystals. All the dialogue has a great flow and reminds me of Rush lyrics! The plot, while semi-familiar, sets itself apart with great twists throughout that most came extremely unexpectedly. Many times I found myself empathizing with each of these characters. I enjoyed every bit of this book and can confidently say that I'm anxiously awaiting for the next book in this series. My only big complaint is how relatively short this book is. At only 250ish pages, this story wrapped up way faster than I wanted it to. With this said, I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a well-oiled piece of fantasy fiction. This book is a true fantasy hidden-gem (pun intended!) and a great read for fantasy fans!

“The Six and the Crystals of Ialana: Book 1 of the Ialana Series” by Katylynn Brooke has all the elements for an epic Fantasy novel – and it delivers on that promise.
War is a vicious wheel in the Ialana, its many Province’s awash in violence, some more so than others. In the Province of Aelfar, ‘recruitment’ is underway for the Army – boys and young men plucked from their parents’ home and marched across the land. In the Village of Meadowfield, the Baker’s Son, Jarah, and the Blacksmith’s son Adain learn by chance that they have been having the same dreams – dreams that started pleasant but now leave them both shaking. When the Army comes and recruits the boys, along with Adain’s best friend, Blaidd, they stick together. Soon, the opportunity arises, arranged by Tristan, a young soldier with dreams of his own, for the 3 to escape. The 3 dreamers (Blaidd is not having the dreams) set off towards the mountains, along the way finding 3 other dreamers, 15 year old Kex who refuses to marry, The Shoemakers daughter, Tegan and Djana, who has fled the City of Rhiannon via an underground railroad type of escape. Adventures none of them expected await, arousing talents and memories in each of them. The dreams are telling them all something, and very soon they will learn just how important that is.
Brooke writes with vivid detail, bringing moments and scenes to life. Great character development that carries you through, investing you in the lives of these young people. This will leave you anxious for Book 2!

The Six and the Crystals of Ialana is a really good read. Its not one I would normally choose but I did enjoy the idea of a fantasy land and adventure that the six main characters take you on. The guys have been captured by a evil ruler who only wants to use them for his war fighting purposes. They escape into the mysterious and dangerous mountains and meet up with some girls. There goal is to work together to navigate the land and find the 500 year old crystals before others do. Each of the six have their own point of view of what their current reality is and that's what makes the book a good read. Its not just a narrator or a one sided point of view. They get to experience all sorts of majestic creatures along they way and have to beware of one the ones in their present company. Its just like watching a snake in the grass. You have to be keen about their every move. All in all I like the story and have passed it on to my niece who enjoys this genre. I am looking forward to reading the next book from this author.

The Six, and the Crystals of Ialana is a captivating fantasy book that is suitable for everyone from young teenagers upwards.

Relaying the story of six teenagers who are inextricably linked, this is a story of reincarnation, discovery, fate, inner strength and belief. We meet the six main characters as they experience the power of mysterious, shared dreams. These turn out to be memories of themselves in a previous lifetime, and thus begins a new chapter in their journey. Things went disastrously wrong the last time they were all together. Now they're in a desperate race against time to change their destiny, and the the fate of their country and loved ones. They set off on an exciting adventure, meeting many characters and creatures on the way. Blaidd is clearly the villain of the piece, though I never stopped hoping that he'd turn over a new leaf and see the error of his ways.

Containing many magical elements that are often found in fantastical tales, the author creates her own believable world with engaging characters and vivid details.

I'll admit that I was initially a little confused over the different characters, POV's and various locations, but it all makes sense after a few chapters and that became a non-existent issue thereafter.

Exceptionally well written, the writing flows smoothly and it was an easy read.

I think this book would appeal to fans of Percy Jackson, The Chronicles of Narnia and the Hobbit. An enjoyable read.

Interesting and enjoyable read for fantasy lovers everywhere. Brooke has brought together six lovable main characters with incredible past lives, and placed them in the magical world of Ialana.

Join Jarah, Djana, Tegan, Kex, Tristan, and Adain as they escape the army, arranged marriage, and capture in their present lives, in order to follow strange dreams about their past lives. None of the Six know who they were or why they share dreams, but each of them agree to join together, unknowingly setting themselves on an ancient mission. The same mission that went wrong in their previous lives centuries ago.

However like any good fantasy, there is evil. Twisted creatures and an evil reptilian king stand in their way. The Six must find the lost healing crystal if they hope to overcome the forces of evil and restore the natural balance to Ialana, but will they be betrayed again?

Brooke draws upon physic theories to explain the existence of other dimensions, creatures and magic. I especially enjoyed these parts and the conversations between Irusan (a cat-type creature) and Jarah and Tegan. Overall the story is well-written, but I did feel that the pace slows down too much in the middle. The ending however, is superb.

I would recommend this book to younger teens and fantasy lovers who are looking for an easy and enjoyable read.

This has all the classic elements of a quest, and should appeal to fantasy lovers of all ages. Danger and mystery follow the six and make for a compelling read, as the twists and turns unfold.
    Highly enjoyable.
