The Sorrowsmith Kindle Edition
It’s Not Houses That Are Haunted…
In 1920, twenty-four-year-old Beatrice Clay arrives at the remote, salt-scoured cottage by the sea that will be her home for the rest of her life. Married to a man she does not love and whose child she carries, her heart still bleeds for her first love, lost on the battlefields of the Somme.
In 1951, Beatrice meets a stranger on the beach. A man whose eyes change colour to always match that of the sea’s, who reappears on the same day, sitting on the same piece of driftwood, in the same place, once a year to listen to her story.
She tells him of her life trapped upon a brittle shore between the restless sea and the equally unpredictable tides of her husband's cruelty. Of the strange things that happen in her home, the sounds, the voices, the thing she almost sees creeping out of the corner of her eye, the continual sense of wrongness. She tells him of her abusive, controlling, obsessive husband; she tells him of her heartbreaks; she tells him of her mysteriously vanished baby that everyone suspects she murdered; she tells him of the two men she has loved and lost; she tells him how at night the sea whispers poison and madness in her ear. She tells him about her fears for her own sanity. She tells him about a life she would not have chosen but one that her choices made for her.
She tells him of her sorrows.
In return, he shows her the only way to defeat sorrow. By bringing the dead back to life to help her kill her husband.
The Sorrowsmith, a standalone novel of horror, love, sacrifice, and the enduring power of the human spirit set between the two world wars.

About the author

Andy Monk is an independent writer of dark, speculative fiction, a professional daydreamer and inventor of worlds who lives in Suffolk in the UK
His mind, however, is usually to be found in various other fantastical places.
Andy always wanted to be either a writer or a professional footballer. As his fledgling footballing career was hampered by an inability to kick, head, pass or doing anything with the ball other than trip over it and faceplanting in the mud, he eventually decided to plump for the writing.
Though he is still more than capable of tripping up and faceplanting in the mud...
The majority of Andy's books are dark historical fantasies, focussing on vampires and the humans who find themselves drawn into their orbit. This world currently encompasses three separate series and three novellas, In the Absence of Light (primarily set in London between 1679 and 1737) is Andy's first published work. All works branded as In the Company of Shadows - currently Rumville (set in London in 1710) and The Night's Road (set in the Holy Roman Empire between1630-1631), and the novellas Precious Things (1837), The Burning and A House of the Dead (both 1630) - are all subsequent works, featuring both new and returning characters in the same universe.
Outside of his vampire universe, Andy has published the Hawker's Drift series, a fantasy saga chronicling the inhabitants of a remote town in the old American west and their interactions with the town's mayor, who may, or may not, be the Devil. Plus the standalone fantasy novels The Sorrowsmith and The House of Shells, which, while not forming a series, are both set in the same universe.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2023Another great story by Andy Monk. I love his style of writing...he can "paint" wonderful pictures, landscapes, and emotions with his words! He is able to transport his readers to wonderfully vivid landscapes and introduce them to his characters and creatures in the most interesting way.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2023Warning: this book has domestic violence in many forms.
This is the tale of a heartbroken woman and an evil man? Spirit? Entity? The story skips back and forth in time, which can be a bit of a challenge to follow, but it makes sense in the end. The "Sorrowsmith" delights in others' grief and pain. There's only one way to defeat it...
I received an ARC from Hidden Gems, and I'm volunteerarily leaving a review.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2023This is a very heavy book and is non linear. It takes place during both world wars. Beatrice’s life is filled with strife, grief, guilt, and abuse at the hands of her husband. To make matters worse, she is hounded by an unearthly spirit that is bound to her husband. If you are triggered by physical and sexual assault, this will be a hard read.
I loved how real the characters felt. They are as complicated as real people. I found myself wanting to help Beatrice while everyone else turns a blind eye to her husband’s dark deeds. The author captures what life is like in an abusive relationship. It’s not sugar coated. I had my doubts about all the flashbacks. I’m glad I was wrong. It’s very important to know how things went wrong for everyone involved. This book is definitely worth reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2023I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy. First of all this book should have trigger warnings as it does contain abuse: physical, emotional and sexual. This is a lengthy book so be prepared to invest and fall into a dark hole for a bit of time. Beatrice Clay is a woman who suffers at her awful sorry excuse for a husband for years upon years. As if dealing with her husband is not bad enough she has to deal with the evil that surrounds her husband as well. I wanted to fight for Beatrice against everything she endured. I did find myself drawn to this book because I wanted to find out what happened to Beatrice. Overall, investing the time for this dark journey was worth it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2023Nothing scary about this horror.
I normally don't mind time jumps but this one just made no sense. Like it jumped around for no reason. So disappointed...I really wanted to like it more
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2023Creepy and quick paced

5.0 out of 5 stars what a brilliant idea for a story was not able to put it down till I finished it
Sorrowsmith just brilliant in my humble, I read in a sitting of two days as I couldn’t put it down would have been one sitting bad had some work that I need to do just couldn’t wait. Then I read it again. Yep it’s that good. Multi faceted characters, (he does writing a female perspective so well), great plot and may have shed a tear or two reading it. Can’t recommend enough even if this isn’t your usual genre as it wasn’t mine till a good friend recommended this author to me over a bag of crisps.
This was something a little different but still with that dark element I have come to know and love. This is quite possibly my favourite of all this authors works. As a stand alone novel it gripped my attention and heart.
Though from his series Rumsville and Hawkers Drift are still top as they have three of my favourite characters in them. Not saying In the absence of light series and Nights Road didn’t both suck me right in too. All worth a read.
As Nights Road is still awaiting conclusion I’m looking forward to seeing how that story pans out, one thing is for certain I never see and am always sucked right in by his wonderful plot twists coming, though more than a bit impatient to get the next instalment Sept.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
Love the way the book keeps up the suspense by playing with the chronological order of events. Hence the dark circles under my eyes of a morning because once again I couldn’t put it down to go to sleep!!
