The Third Note (The Secrets of Selkie Moon Mystery Series) (Book 3) Kindle Edition
After returning from her last strange quest, Selkie Moon is more than ready to settle down. So when she receives a parcel from her great grandmother 35 years after her death, opening it seems like such a bad idea.
But curiosity wins and the objects it contains plunge Selkie into long-buried family secrets. Suddenly an old mystery begins to echo with the present and she’s wrapped in a spell that won’t let go: frightening visions, deadly encounters and a pull from the past that she can’t ignore.
What happened down by the old stone well in 1896 – and why does it matter to Selkie after more than a hundred years?
Armed with only her wits and psychic twinges that are hardly reliable, Selkie is drawn into a web of cryptic clues that delve deep into the folklore of Ireland where superstition still weaves a powerful – and fatal – spell.
If you love mysteries with lightning pace, twists and turns you never see coming, quirky clues and a sprinkling of the supernatural, then you’ll love The Third Note.
Join Selkie Moon on a quest that will threaten not only her sanity, but her life.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2018The Third Note is Astonishing
Selkie Moon, the “Being Sleek” seminar presenter and Psychic extraordinaire recieves a package in Hawaii sent to her by a lawyer in Australia representing her long dead grandma Bridie. Thus begins a psychic journey into a multi-layered mystery that has been simmering for over 100 years. She finds clues, sees visions, there’s identity theft, betrayal, items with links to folklore, faeries from the past and love that cannot happen. Her search for answers brings her to Ireland, her Grandmother’s birthplace with her friend Devina who is searching for a girl whose identity she stole years ago. The stories of three sets of sisters are interwoven over generations and nothing is what it seems. Virginia King’s mastery of a very complex plot kept me enthralled as twist after turn continued to keep me wondering who was who and what in Ireland was going on! Any lover of fascinating mysteries, psychic phenomena or Irish folklore should not miss The Third Note!

This, the third in the series, is my favourite Selkie Moon mystery yet.
The plot does stand alone, but I generally recommend reading this series in order as there is a wealth of detail in the character development that really enriches each shorter story arc.
Selkie is more confident in her talents and relationships in this outing than she has been in the previous books, and the result is a more adventurous, less hesitant protagonist. The turmoil is more focused on the events and situations Selkie finds herself in, rather than the spiralling pit of self doubt she has fallen into in the past.
We do dive more into Selkie’s past here; but whereas The Second Path explored Selkie’s recent family history, The Third Note delves further back into her ancestry. Unsurprisingly, murder and visions both feature – past and present.
As usual, the story is packed with puzzles, cryptic clues and symbolism for the reader to enjoy solving before, or along with, the characters. I found these elements were less densely packed than in the earlier books, which gave the story a smoother flow and mirrored Selkie’s clear mind and renewed focus.
I particularly loved the way clues and plot points were mirrored between past and present, and also between the two present-day storylines, creating an intricate symmetry that is very pleasing to an orderly-minded reader.
I’m glad that Selkie is growing into herself and starting to find more of a balance in her life and am looking forward to seeing where she travels next.
It’s not the first time Davina’s called me a detective – a spiritual detective, responsible for delving into the mysteries of the soul. It’s a role that’s clear to her and a total mystery to me, even after my other escapades and insights. It’s as if each time something amazing happens, I gain a higher understanding, then in a flash I turn back into ordinary Selkie. I remember the insights but they haven’t transformed me into a mystic.
“You’re just saying that,” I tell her, “because you want to drag me off to Ireland on another psychic goose chase.”

It’s what happened when I lost my memory and had to travel across the world to get it back. I mustn’t forget what I discovered then: that the answers are in my own heart."
With Selkie now attempting to settle in Hawaii, her great-grandmother Bridie’s much delayed parcel comes as a huge surprise to her. Why did Bridie wait until 35 years after her death to send it to her, and what is the significance of her mysterious gift? While Selkie knows that Bridie was Irish, she doesn’t know why she left Ireland nor why she chose Selkie as the recipient.
When Selkie meets up with her old friend Davina, she asks Selkie to accompany her on a trip to Ireland—Davina’s birthplace. Davina has secrets of her own which need investigating. Selkie figures it’s the perfect opportunity to do some research into her own family history. What she finds will both shock her and have far reaching repercussions.
Exploring the idea that our past affects our present far more than we realise, The Third Note is a chilling, yet thoughtful, page turner with a good dose of humour thrown in to lighten things up.
If you enjoyed the first two books in the Selkie Moon Mystery series, then you’ll love The Third Note. In fact, even if you didn’t read the first two books in the series, chances are you’ll be fascinated enough by book 3 that you’ll want to go back and read them too. Oh yes, and, did I mention there’s a free prequel as well?

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite reads
As always I love to go travelling with Selkie Moon while she discovers the mysteries of herself. This time in Ireland was magical for me. Thanks again Virginia.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Kind of Book That You Don't Want to End
This is the kind of book that you don't want to end, yet you still want to know what happens. I think I enjoyed 'The Third Note' the most out of the series, although some of that may be down to British familiarity with the setting. A mystery parcel arrives from Selkie's dead Great-Grandmother which sends her on a mystery quest to Ireland, where there is an abundance of folklore, written about beautifully in this book, nice touch with the two characters Mickey and Finn. At the same time, one of Selkie's best friends has her own mystery to solve so the storyline gets intertwined, and then out again. And don't forget there is a love interest thread going on, can she trust him.? You'll be willing her to trust him but she keeps having dreams and being all psychic! The Third Note really drags the reader in, this series is so addictive, gets you questioning was that a coincidence? No, was it? I can't help thinking there is an army of grown up Harry Potter fans who would love to read this series - a compliment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read
I absolutely love this book and the lack of sleep I’ve endured because I couldn’t put them down was all worth it! Nearing the end of the third book I had that terrible feeling of wanting to slow down as I didn’t want to reach the end and that feeling was warring with wanting to see how it ended!
Cannot recommend highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, fast-paced and intriguing.
I'm so glad I stumbled across Virginia King's writing just after she completed her first novel. She's a brilliant writer who tells fascinating stories.
Having read all her other books (double-fast and over and over to make sure I hadn't missed anything!) I couldn't wait to read her latest mystery.
The Third Note is all I hoped (well, knew, really) it would be. As it romps from Hawaii to Ireland, land of mists and mystery, layer is added to layer until the truth of an ancient crime is laid bare. Fascinating stuff. I could hardly bear to put it down.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and volunteered to write a review, but it's so good I had to buy it too!
Well done, Virginia! Keep them coming!
