Purchase options and add-ons
—Paul Lisson, poet and editor of HA&L, Hamilton Arts & Letters Magazine.
The Weeping Degree is a raw and edgy collection of poetry and prose navigating the soul’s journey from tears to triumph.
From its opening pages, readers of Kelly Watt’s gritty poems are taken on a hero’s journey—following the ripple effect of childhood sexual trauma as it transforms throughout a lifetime from a wound to a gift.
Divided into three riveting sections: “The Home for Little Girls,” “The Buddha and The Pink Futon,” and, “Hands Across the World,” the poems in The Weeping Degree traverse the globe from the shadows of foster care in a bland North American suburb, to a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Nepal.
Written for poetry lovers, spiritual seekers, astrology aficionados and mental health advocates alike, this collection will take you on a novelistic odyssey, a profound healing road, where poetry is a sacred art, a place where our deepest sorrows are transmuted through imagination and creativity to self-acceptance and joy.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2024I feel like I can only talk in superlatives and exclamation points about Kelly Watts' new book, The Weeping Degree -- raw, brilliant, gorgeous, amazing, you get the picture. While these poems come from her deep, deep soul work to transform the child who lived with terrible trauma to this beautiful, composed woman who finds the languages of all her stages -- languages written so beautifully, that let us in and shine a light for us though our stories are not the same. I'm not particularly a fan of personal poetry, but Kelly shows what the personal can be for the reader in the hands and heart of a masterful writer.

Her new book, The Weeping Degree, contains prose and poetry, artfully woven together. She tells of her healing journey from severe childhood trauma. Her writing is highly elevated, we know that she is sharing a deeply personal and tragic story, but we feel her evolution, and are better humans for having shared the journey with her. Absolutely beautiful writing.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2024Kelly Watt's book is a soul unveiling from the first piece to the last word, time stopped as I held on and through--- stayed with her courageous journey of retrieving and integrating her wounded selves, It is a testament to feeling in the dark led by the inner push of sense making from deeply scarred places.
Each piece of writing begins with an excerpt of inborn challenges and gifts from her birth chart.
thank you Kelly,

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2025I have always been grateful I met the author as a teenager on a monsoon day at a school in the Himalayas, a girl swept into our lives as not so much a breath of fresh air but a typhoon blast of new ideas. I became intrigued then, besotted even, with Watt’s writing, and now after having read The Weeping Degree I am in awe.
The author’s sheer courage to embark on and complete a long journey of exploration from a childhood of terrible trauma and heedless adults to the brilliant being and writer of today is astounding. Though the author and I followed a similar path into Tibetan Buddhism, only Watt brought to that path a super-human courage to explore every truth of her wounded childhood. She willingly ploughed up a vast field of betrayal, of terror, of loneliness, and planted in that once-poisoned soil the seeds of renewal, a determination to Be Alive! And from that sprang this exquisite book of poetry.
The beauty of Watt’s writing will not keep the knowledge of her experiences from punching you in the stomach, but it is well-worth risking. The poems will change you. If anything, you will never imbue the phrase, “You know, you know…” with any kind of innocence again.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2025The use of astrology intertwined in the writings was enlightening in relation to the subject matter. The poem’s content was raw, however each presented as if there was this beautiful, healing aura surrounding each word. Prose itself was artful , musical in a therapeutic sense. The journey in this book resulted in a feeling of emotional healing. Well done and very much worth the read. I feel it made a contribution to those who may have a mental health crisis with Kelly’s words, poems and prose. Words carry a great weight. Totally recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2025I couldn't put this compelling, artful book down. Watt's story is traumatic and heart wrenching, but the way she tells her tale is gorgeous, joyful, and full of surprises. Her language is fierce, sometimes humorous, and always honest. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2024Kelly Watt has crafted exquisite poetry and prose that moved me deeply through tragedies on a journey toward being uplifted by hope. The astrology theme effectively melds the universal with the oh-so-personal story. So happy to have discovered this talented author! I'll be reading all her offerings.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2024The combination of Kelly's honesty and her imagination, topped with her brilliant writing skills make this book a great read. Recommended for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars The courage to heal
Kelly Watt has done the bravest of things as a writer: turned the blank screen on herself. In poetry and prose both brave and beautiful she takes us on a tumultuous journey from the abyss of abuse to a place where the light comes through. "It's not what you suffer, but what you tell yourself about your suffering that makes the difference," Watts writes in one of the collection's last pieces. In these "tellings" there is healing, acceptance and reckoning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful!
Kelly Watt’s poems and prose shatter innocence. Her powerful imagery plucks at heartstrings and provides an emotionally charged ride with steep highs and deep lows, not unlike a roller coaster. The Weeping Degree will steal your breath and make you pray for catharsis. Poignant and gut-wrenching.

5.0 out of 5 stars The weeping degree it Is a tour de force from Kelly!
The Weeping Degree is a tour de force from Kelly. She is truly an alchemist stirring the heady and often dangerous elixir of brutal expose, humor, pathos, discovery and survival. There is an abundance of heart-rending insights throughout this marvelous book. She deftly brings the heavens down to earth - while clearing our hearts for the universal connection only the golden braids of sadness and subsequent comedy, and the scathing light of illumined darkness can achieve! Bravo Ms. Watt! If you are a student of poetry and astrology, then your heart has found a home here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and relatable!
I found these poems so powerful, raw, and vulnerable! The author interspersed her poems with bits of story, also well-written.
She has glued together the poems and small stories with astrology placements, an intriguing idea (though I don't always agree with the astrological interpretations).
Fine, strong work.
