I don’t know what it is like to live with Down’s Syndrome, so I can’t say for certain if this was a spot-on depiction or not, but Author McCarthy did a wonderful job showing how her MC was not your typical protagonist.

It’s a dark fantasy meets a set of fairy tale characters and the writing style sent a frisson up my spine. Both Hannah and her father, Bleddyn, are indepth, deeply real characters. And Hannah’s mum…. Initially, I want to say the less said about her the better the narcissistic, avoidance-loving sod, but it can’t be easy creating a character like this who provides financial assistance but is otherwise estranged from the family due to her own nature.

Back to the story – Wales based so Welsh mythology gets involved. The character building and story development was good – light as a flower unfurling. Dark magics, witches, good magic… in a modern setting. While it follows multiple characters, the focus is Hannah.

Just finished this magical novel last night. I loved it, of course. Hannah, the MC, has Down Syndrome and her character is depicted in such a beautiful way, showing those who may have misconceptions about those with DS, that they are so much more than who you think they are. I was pulled into the story quickly as Hannah and her Dadda(Bleddyn) moved to Wales from England. Once there, Hannah navigates many changes from dealing with the complicated feelings she has about her selfish absent mother, to making new friends, and conquering fears. And then there's The Lane behind her new house, a beautiful but equally dark and mysterious place where she meets both a wolf and a witch that are both trying to sway Hannah in one direction, but who is who and why are they there? You fall in love with the characters, as well as the country of Wales. I learned a few Welsh words too, which was really neat! I don't wanna tell you the whole story, that is why you need to read this fabulous book!

This is a story that is a must read for everyone, children and adults.

Catherine McCarthy creates characters with such depth of personality and dimension of feeling that they come alive on the page. Hannah, a young girl defined by her enthusiasm and heart rather than the condition of Down Syndrome that draws often unwanted attention to her existence, stands out in The Wolf and the Favour. Hannah's beleaguered, kind, and empathic father, Bleddyn, is equally vivid. When dealing with the absentee mother--a narcissist chasing fame between London and Sweden--I felt genuine anguish for Hannah and Bleddyn.

This dark fantasy wanders a Welsh wood of enchantment, witchery, and spirit, blending the struggles of life with subtle horrors of the fantastique.

Take time and savor this novel. The writing is a beautiful voice that elevates an incredible story.

The way the author explores the life of a person with Down Syndrome, both from the inside and the outside, neatly creating a plot around it while continuing to be realistic in the descriptions, reactions of third characters, the challenges that the parent faces, the pushes and toll that it brought to the parental relationship, especially after having one side that is selfish, and how it changes he dynamic of life of everyone around in a certain way, for the good and for the bad is simply impressive. Not many can do what Catherine McCarthy achieved here with such precision. The good-wolf bad-wolf dynamics is gripping, as it’s the part of the book that has the most mystery. We have a cunning and deceitful witch, and another good witch, or she-wolf that is doing its best to fight for the animals in the forest by keeping the bad witch at bay, but there is so much that Catherine McCarthy hides about them both that we are forced to be contempt with what we get in the pages as we read. Well done. If you like slow burning spooky tales, filled with mystery and contrast, you should grab your copy of this book now.

This was such a fantastic and thoughtful dark fantasy and horror story meets mythological tale. The rich and chilling imagery was brought forth by some highly detailed and creative writing on the author’s part, and the infusion of Welsh culture and dialect really helped bring a unique spin on the fantasy and horror genres.

To me, the heart of this narrative rested in the unique character development and world-building the author put into place. The author's ability to make the protagonist neurodivergent and showcase their individual selves perfectly while also showcasing the challenges that both the protagonist and her parents face was so grounded and moving to read. Paired with the mystery of the good wolf versus the alarming wolf dilemma, the addition of the fantasy element with the witches also made the growth and development of these characters that much more impactful.

This story is full of surprising twists, that will have you on the edge of your seat. A good one for Halloween. It’s a story of a young girl with Down Syndrome that it seems all the forces of nature either love her or dislike her. The paranormal world makes itself known to her and she becomes confused as to who she can trust. Her life depends on who she trusts.

I liked the storyline and the characters come alive. Hannah is both innocent and curious, she steals your heart. The author’s depiction of a child with Down syndrome seems right on.

The thing I didn’t like are some of the scenes with animal violence but then, nature has a system of its own.

So, I wanted to write a snippy review that would objectively point out the good and the critical bits of the book. However, I decided to throw that out with the bath water and just gush on how good this book is.

I love Catherine McCarthy’s books. Ever since I read her short story collection Mists and Megaliths I have been a fan, so when I heard that she was releasing this book I was well on board, especially when she said that she was putting a person with Down Syndrome at the heart of the story.

Now, I expected to like this book, but I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did and I think that this is already a contender for my favourite book of the year.

One of the things that I liked about this book is that it reminded me of classic children’s literature and for me had tones of Alan Garner. And similarly to Alan Garner, Catherine McCarthy weaves folklore throughout the contemporary story of this book which utterly entranced me. However, it’s not only that, it’s the characters of the book that had me spellbound. Hannah herself is a great character. She’s resourceful, insightful and wraps her father round her little finger.

Not only that, I really enjoyed the relationships between the characters, especially between Hannah’s teacher’s father, Emrys. An old farmer who also his own secrets.

There are many themes going on in the book such as the breakdown of the relationship between Hannah and her mother, and also the blossoming romance between Hannah’s father and her teacher Bleddyn, and all of it is handled really well.

Now my final rant is how much I loved that Catherine McCarthy deftly weaves horror elements into the story and whilst this book is totally suitable for younger readers, there are some scary scenes in the book (but not too scary).

    Final Thoughts

I wanted to say something insightful and catchy to finish but the only thing I have got is that I utterly adored this book.

Hannah is a ten-year-old girl with Down Syndrome, and much of the tale is told through her eyes and her thoughts. She is adjusting to a new life in Wales with her father, facing not only feelings of abandonment by her mother but happenings dark, wonderous, and terrifying in the Lane behind her house. There are new friendships for Hannah to navigate and embrace, and new challenges that require her to be strong, and brave. She acquires secrets and is not sure who she can trust.

Hannah reveals herself as an engaging character. This is shown also through the eyes of her father, the neighbours and their daughter/Hannah’s teaching assistant who becomes a friend. I was pleased to see the presentation of Hannah’s differences written so respectfully. Her personality and spirit shine through, as do her bright hopes and dreams.

An enchanting and engaging story, not to be missed.
