Third Degree Yearn: A Second Chance Historical Romance (Bartholomew series Book 3) Kindle Edition
When I was just a girl, I gave my heart to the housekeeper’s son. He took it with him when he left and I never got it back.
I’ve loved Julian Moore for as long as I can remember. But my plans for a future were stolen before we ever got the chance.
Playmates at four. Constant companions at nine. And the undisputed love of my young life by sixteen. We were best friends through it all. But when Julian got sent away, my stubborn heart never got the message. Over time and distance, I wrote hundreds of letters and spilled all my deepest secrets. But the boy I’d once loved left me far behind. My letters went unanswered, and I never got over the pain.
Seven years later, Julian is back with a few secrets of his own.
When a surprise encounter forces my former friend back into my life, I realize just how much has changed since we’ve been apart. And how my feelings haven’t. We’re not sixteen anymore, and for the first time, Julian sees me as something more than a friend. Yet he can't envision a future for a proper lady and the housekeeper’s son.
There’s a fine line between the past and the present. These old wounds are hard to ignore, and I find myself desperate to avoid being left behind again. Julian may not see himself the way I do, but I must decide if the boy I yearned for all those years ago can be the man I’ll love forever.
Will our future be the love story we write ourselves or will destiny stand in our way again?
Book #3 in the Bartholomew series follows the steamy second-chance romance between two former best friends. Third Degree Yearn is a full-length historical romance filled with charm and wit, swoony correspondence, and a guaranteed happily ever after.

About the author

Laney Hatcher is a firm believer that there is a spreadsheet for every occasion and pie is always the answer. She is an author of stories both old and new where the HEAs are always guaranteed. Often too practical for her own good, Laney enjoys her life in the southern United States with her husband, children, and incredibly entitled cat.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2025This reminded me of a reverse Cinderella, in all of the best ways. Genevieve and Julian are that fun mix of comfortable old friends mixed with the discovery of new intimacy. While I wanted a bigger explanation for how Julian reached the end and it read like a proper historical fiction with a more modern feel - Laney Hatcher has embraced writing female leads that despite the time they been placed in, are women I would love to become friends with. A success in any book I read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2024Genevieve and Julia's story was a great addition to the series. Their book has a little less angst and goes a little slower than the first two, but still a very good book. I like the main characters and the side characters. I am ready for Silas and Mary's book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2023I have been waiting for Julian and Genevieve’s reunion since the last book! Do yourself a favor and do not read this as a standalone, the pining in book #2 totally sets the mood for this romance and should not be missed.
Julian and Genevieve are the epitome of friends to love. They grow up as best friends, but as they grow, so do their feelings. And then Julian has to go find his own way in the world and they are relegated to writing to stay in touch. That doesn’t go as planned, but I loved the letters and seeing how Genevieve continued to rely on her communication with Julian to work out her feelings.
The second chance portion of their reunion might take a little while, but the groveling was first rate. And Hatcher does not let us down with the steam of their relationship. And I loved how everyone already knew!
I did want to shake Julian for his lack of communication, but he does get his act together! And don’t even get me started on his mother, ugh. She’s the worst.
All in all, a terrific historical romance that lived up to the hype (created in my own mind) for their reunion!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2024I truly enjoyed this book. I loved the time that passed and how both Jules and Gem changed with that passage. It was unfair for both of them, missing out on time because of an adult’s selfishness. Poor Julian was manipulated and had a difficult time accepting the love the Bartholomews were giving him. They are the kindest family ever and it hurts that he had to endure that. Leave it to a 12 year old to make an adult feel foolish. Franny came in clutch and pointed out the obvious point Julian clearly missed. I loved how sure of herself Genevieve was. She wore her heart on her sleeve and didn’t hesitate much to get what she wanted. I love that she stood up for herself and her talent against that childish editor. And Percy…..need I say more about the magical cat?
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2023Book three in the Bartholomew series. Can be read and enjoyed as stand-alone, but series is so good I recommend starting at the beginning. Each book is about a different Bartholomew sibling with secondary characters the same throughout the series. Full length told in dual POV with HEA. Julian and Genevieve grew up together but are from different classes. I love that Genevieve and her family never treated Julian as anything other than part of the family. Julian had to fight his own battle of being worthy of Genevieve's love. I love the sweet and steam in this series!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2024Good plot but um a Marquess is higher than a viscount... this made things weird for a second.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2023Laney Hatcher has quickly become one of my go to authors. There is nothing I love more than an interconnected, standalone, family romance series and she currently has two series in the works. In her latest book, Third Degree Yearn the youngest daughter of the family, Genevieve finally gets her HEA, with her childhood best friend/long-lost love Julian. We’ve waited patiently for these two to finally get their second chance at love and Hatcher hit a home run! Childhood friends to lovers is not always my favorite trope, but Third Degree Yearn was done excellently. I really enjoyed the discussion of social classes affecting their relationship and more importantly, the fact that her family treated Julian as an equal. I cannot wait for the next book. Silas and Mary have been slowly inching their way towards each other in the background and I am here for their love story.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2023I am not, generally, a historical romance lover but Laney Hatcher is one of the few exceptions to the rule. I feel like I’ve waited forever for Third Degree Yearn, and it’s everything I’d hoped for. Sexy and funny, with witty dialogue, this friends-to-strangers-to-lovers story was exactly the story I needed for Gen and Jules.
