From the Inside Flap

Vorakhar smiled, revealing wicked fangs. I am not. You have anointed my flesh with your blood. You are a Darrowdelve. There is room for merriment here. A continuance of the dance. You have a choice. I can gift you the missing keystone, and give you a second, greater chance at life. Or I can watch you die here before me. A small, pathetic, unremarkable death.

"What are you saying?" Harald's thoughts were like leaves scattered by a gale. "You can heal me?"

Of course. Accept my gift, and I shall see you whole. I shall blast open the door of your soul so that nothing holds you back. Not others, not your body, not even the lies you've told yourself.

Harald stared blearily at the demon. He knew he should reject the offer. Better a clean death than to accept whatever a demon was trying to sell, right?

But he didn't want to die.

Fear arose within him and gripped his throat with clammy fingers. Death. To die here, alone in the dark with a demon. Only Sam would notice he'd not returned.

All his dreams, all his hopes.

"Fine," he whispered.

Excellent. Let us see what comes of this second chance. Here, child of Darius. Receive my charity, and know that, when we one day meet again, I shall seek to learn what you have made of yourself.

Vorakhar reached out and pressed something sharp against Harald's brow. There was resistance for but a second, and then a small object slipped through skin and bone as Harald abruptly spasmed as if he'd been blasted by a thunderbolt.

For a moment, all was blazing light and power, and then it was gone, leaving Vorakhar before him as before, grinning and satisfied.
Know hunger, human child. Know endless, insatiable, ravenous hunger. Now go forth, and consume the world.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are unique and very well flushed out and the premise is the story isn’t typical either. My only request is to minimize the internal monologues as much as possible. They can be a bit much and take up a lot of time in the book unnecessarily and not move the plot forward. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the authors work, his style of writing, and the story presented.

Phil has outdone himself here. I’m willing to say that Throne Hunters is at least as good as Bastion (The Immortal Great Souls book 1), if not BETTER. I’m going to reserve the “if not better” decision until I read book 2, but this one is that good. The plot, characters, growth, power system, are all excellent, and I’d recommend to everyone. The system itself is fairly unique, and the history of the broader world seems rich and detailed. I haven’t been compelled to read (and not stop) like this in a while. I think Phil just put out a new staple of the genre, up there with Cradle, Bastion, Stormweaver, etc. Do yourselves a favor and read this book if you’re even remotely a fan of progression fantasy!

This review is on an ARC of this book. I've read several of the author's other series including The Immortal Souls which I absolutely love, so I was excited when he first started releasing Throne Hunters, then known as Thrones of the Fallen, on Royal Road.

Overall, this is great book and I would definitely recommend reading it. If you are a fan of the author’s other woks, this one doesn't disappoint. This is a fairly standard Progression Fantasy with some LitRPG elements, but that doesn't detract from it at all and adds to it in my opinion.

Harald the main character is an enjoyable protagonist and his struggle for power while struggling to remain true to his ideals is engaging. While I do feel that his power gain is a little too quick and would have liked to have seen it stretch out a little more, I understand why it is that way. The rest of Haralds crew are less developed at this point, but I’m looking forward to seeing how their characterizations grow in future books. I'm hoping to see more of the outside world and different nations as well. I've already read ahead on Royal Road and am definitely looking forward to the rest of the story.

Big fan of Phil's work, and of course this one is great as well. Some serials tend to have issues when being adapted to book releases, with weird pacing and awkward endings that just sort of appear out of nowhere, but this one is particularly seamless.

One question that Phil seems to constantly tackle in his writing is: "how does an author go about justifying the growth in power and status of the main character, given that the world remains consistent with its rules?"; and just like in his Immortal Great Souls series, it's looking like this series will answer it just as perfectly.

Bonus points for the chapters dedicated to our main characters learning to use the long sword; that was awesome, especially with the inclusion of the in-world Meyer's square.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect? No. It gets close, really close.

I won't talk about the plot, read the blurb for that. I will talk about The characters. The characters are excellently written in that they feel above all like real people who happen to live in a world of magic. The main character and those that are part of his life are flawed yet relatable with the result that their highs and lows are celebrated by the reader. The main character starts at a very low point, largely of his own making and by the end of this book gets to a place that is...... No spoilers lol. Give this a go you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow what quality writing should be a best-seller in book stores

This book is a huge cut above your normal good quality kindle unlimited book. I thought i was reading a book from a top writer who had had his words polished and edited by a top publishing house. Amazing writing & quality, the title is unassuming and the cover didn't jump out at me. And I wasn't expecting much i just added it to my library on a whim, but I was totally engrossed from the 1st pages and couldn't put the book down. Read every word didn't have to jump past any word filler rambing pages. Phil tucker said he wrote it in a white heat 8k words a day. Damn i think he was possessed by the patron gods of fantasy. Well done Phil. Everyone do yourself a favour and read this
