The moon is falling.

Born with the gravity majik needed to prevent certain doom, instead of training, seventeen-year-old Syd spends her days skipping academy classes to tinker with airships, ignoring her future as a soldier in the army of the Eichon–the goddess-gifted ruler of the planet. As expected, Syd ends up in the Director's office more often than not, and the academy has had to get creative with its "motivational methods" in hopes that Syd will begin to take her gravity majik seriously.

Luckily, she's untouchable, betrothed to the Eichon’s daughter, Adeline. Unluckily, Syd's about to learn she will be the next to take up the Eichon’s mantle.

Adeline has been groomed to follow in her mother’s footsteps since she was a child. When it’s revealed Syd, not Adeline, will become the next Eichon (not to mention do the impossible–save the world), trust begins to break as roles and identities fall apart. Then, when Adeline goes missing, Syd must choose: follow the destiny given to her or find Adeline.

All the while, the looming moon serves as an ever-present reminder of just how small–and thus how big–her problems truly are.

Jenn’s beautiful storytelling sucked me in from the beginning with her lyrical prose and richly developed world building. The magic system in the book was fascinating to me, and I can’t wait to see how the main characters’ powers continue to grow and develop. Her protagonists are feisty and real and deeply relatable, which makes it all the more heartbreaking when {{{redacted}}}. The way Jenn intertwined the fantasy elements with sci-fi throughout the book was deftly done, and made the world come to life. Certain scenes reminded me strongly of the Hunger Games while still having strong fantasy vibes. I was emotionally invested from the very beginning and can’t wait to see what happens to Syd and Addie in the next book!

    For like 100+ pages I thought I was reading a nice little sapphic YA sci-fi academia story...I was getting all invested in the characters and in the budding romance, and in the historical and scientific and majikal details of the world, and then--

    Fiery psychological drama!

    This was a fun ride, with weighty and even dark topics handled deftly and with purpose, never for their own sake, or for shock. Young characters thrown into bigger and more complex plots than they could have anticipated, and handling them in realistically aggravating ways...while never losing heart. Brilliant twists of both plot and interpersonal dynamics...with planet-wide affects. The back cover copy nails it: "...the looming moon serves as an ever-present reminder of just how small--and thus how big--her problems truly are."

    Jenn Storey takes you along on a ride from the first few pages and weaves a tale of magic, technology and a world both interestingly alien yet very recognizable in comparison to our own. Characters with depth and desires invite you along to explore this place and get lost for a little bit among its pages. As a very picky reader I can only recommend this book.

    Even after the first few pages, you can tell how much the author loves the genre. Science-fantasy books might not be the most common types of stories but this one feels takes the best elements of games like Final Fantasy and Mass Effect and turns them into a novel full of intrigue, and twists. The stakes might be high with the entire world in danger but really, this book is all about the two MCs, Syd and Ad, and how two people who are incredibly close can be driven apart by fate and circumstance. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to dive into something new and fresh in the fiction world!

    Very enjoyable mix of technology and magic with excellent, strong characters and a good plotline. Nice use of flashbacks to flesh out characters and motivations and plenty of jeopardy with both a rebellion and the possibility of the end of the world looming. A thoroughly good read. Highly recommend and look forward to the next in the series!
