- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book is for anyone who's looking to get an overview of the various approaches to creating a more healthy, enjoyable, and productive work ethic. With the insights and methods described inside, readers will have quite a wide range of options in their toolbox to support their unique lifestyle.
I found the authors' voice approachable and personal, and I expect other people in the targeted age range (~18-35) will feel similarly. This is an easy read that engages the audience while also providing enough depth to come away with many tangible outcomes and several thought provoking insights. As someone with a background in psychology, cognitive science, and technology, I was already familiar with most of the topics covered. However, I found little nuggets of wisdom and clarity within to recommend this book to others even with a solid background on the subject already. I particularly enjoyed the focused deep dives into the various people discussed in the book. By examining the life and methods of individuals, hidden wisdom can be discovered that provides the personal touch to complement the necessary but often dry evidence distilled from science.
Another major highlight of this book is the artwork created by Mariya Suzuki. The sharp, sketch-style pieces breathe a preciously unique form of life that feels sadly unfamiliar to other self-help, productivity-based books in the same genre. You'll find these also have a gentle yet wonderfully potent effect on the reading experience.
Perhaps you'll find some nuggets of wisdom of your own inside. Hope you enjoy!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI was recommended this book by a friend as it had just been released, fittingly so, during the hight of the covid pandemic. Coincidentally, or not, shortly thereafter, protests and riots started in my home town and across the nation. It's an unsettling time, and this book was a welcomed reprieve from all the chaos. From this book, I gained countless actionable items to help me regain my "sanity" and sense of calm. I originally purchased this book because I was feeling burnt out in my career, thankfully it helped in many other areas of life as well. Thank you to the authors for collaboration on such an important piece of literature. I'm going to take a walk outside now, have a nice day!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis rating applies to the book, how the story unfold and how it close! Time off was a life saver in a moment when busyness was striking hard and on a moment when disruption was more than needed. If you are still not on the working labor due to age or any other reason, please read this book before you start working. If you are already working, please read book as a guide of how we need to handle time off in our life. If you are looking for a new job, please read this book before you start a self destructive routine in your new working environment.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI just love this book.
In it, John and Max share how the most successful people and leaders balance work and life. I love how they don't force what you should adopt as your rest ethic, that's an individual choice. For me, it's usually really long daily walks, sauna sessions, and long periods of relaxing while I cook. I have found I get my best ideas during this down-time, it allows me to connect the dots and recognize patterns that I wouldn't otherwise identify.
This is a transformation book, I'd highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWhat a great book and very important read for so many of us. I’m glad I made the investment. I like what it says in the Travel chapter - “Let’s rediscover and reinvent ourselves. Let’s slow down time and fall in love with life again!” This book is a reminder that the right balance of productivity and noble leisure is essential to being the best and highest and truest version of myself.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase"Time Off" takes us on a study & reflection of time through the lenses of historical and contemporary figures while weaving relevant subject matters and nuanced themes such as "noble leisure". The authors invite us to acknowledge our current perception and framework of time in our daily lives while offering us the breadth and depth to reframe and reposition our perspectives both personally and culturally.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe front of this book says that it is “a practical guide”. If you are looking for an actual guide, this book is not for you. This book is a collection of short memoirs, if you will, of famous people and how they manage their time. I found it quite boring. Maybe further on in the book there was information I would’ve been more interested in. But I could not make it that far. I found that a better way to use my time, was to throw away this book and do something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really do recommend reading this - and then reading it again.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI purchased this book when I found out about it via a Instagram post - and although it took me a little while to finish it that is not a criticism at all of the book.... since I am now reading it again.
It is not a book to be consumed and then forgotten, but to be savored ... you read a chapter, and then pause, think, reflect and maybe make some changes in your own life. Then a little later you pick it up again and read a little more. always take the time to really think about what you have just read, and try and relate that to your life...
I almost never review a book, since I am not sure I have anything fresh to add over those that have reviewed before... but in this instance I really felt i needed to .... "Life changing" is a term which is thrown around and has become somewhat meaningless - but give this a chance and maybe your life will change just a little for the better, !

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful game changer!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseHello, my name is John and I’m a recovering workaholic.
Describing my previous lifestyle as hectic is an understatement. I worked too much and in my free time I stressed about work. It was an endless cycle and I was trapped in the middle of it.
My friend recommended TIME OFF and I have to admit, I was skeptical. I didn’t realize how stressed out I really was. After getting 3 chapters deep I started to apply some of the TIME OFF’s techniques to my lifestyle; just as a test, and to my surprise the results were shocking to say the least….
I found myself being more productive, more creative and actually more happy. I started to enjoy and use my free time more constructively which made me feel more carefree. Things started to change for me and for the better. Even my wife told me that I’m more fun to be around, did TIME OFF save my marriage?
This book was a quick and interesting read and it helped me when I didn’t realize that I needed a little help. Do yourself a favor and take a little TIME OFF

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and full of very good actionable advice
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed reading this book, first of all, it's very well written and easy to read.
But what I really liked was to introduce people's experience from different backgrounds (entrepreneurs, artists etc) with actionable advice to set up in your own life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great advice on how to foster creativity and productiveness
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGreat advice in general about how to foster creativity and productiveness with lots of research backing it up. I found the advice particularly relevant this year when every aspect of my life seemed to meld together — actively taking some time off help me stay fresh and relaxed both at work and in my personal life. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThere are so many books of this type but few of such high calibre. It resonates with common-sense and challenges many of the edifices we accept: such as the protestant work ethic, and how the internet is reducing our capacity to live our lives in accordance with our values and integral health. Well worth a read. It was recommended by Camilla Cavendish in the "FT Weekend" which is one of the best weekend journals to get if you want authoritative reviews and great writing.
