Purchase options and add-ons
Ragul does everything he can to get the better of Peglar, but he becomes increasingly frustrated as his half-brother avoids the traps he sets.
By chance Peglar meets Yalka, a poor girl from the slums. He's wary of her and doesn't understand her, but at the same time he's fascinated because she is like no one he has met before. They continue to meet in secret, and she turns his world upside down by showing him a side of life he never knew existed, so that he begins to question his upbringing and the privileged life he enjoys.
Meanwhile, in a desperate attempt to get ahead, Ragul uses his beautiful but cruel sister, Malina, in a sordid plot to disgrace Peglar. After luring Peglar into a private meeting, Malina accuses him of assaulting her. Ragul seizes on this as an opportunity to challenge Peglar to combat, and despite being innocent he must accept. There is no doubt that Ragul will win, but will that be the end of it?
"The Poisoned Garden" is book 1 of the Leopard's Bane series, an action packed epic that will be loved by fans of fantasy fiction.

About the author

Phill alternates between writing, drinking coffee, and playing the saxaphone (badly) - not always in that order. He lives in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England with Sally, his wife and partner of more years than they can count.
Phill is the award winning author of a number of novels and short stories.
'Paradise Girl', Book 1 of Phill's REBOOT trilogy, is set in the northern hills where, amidst the majestic beauty of the rolling moors, a world pandemic consigns a lone young woman to a bleak future. In Book 2, 'Aftershocks', her twin brother sets out to discover the truth behind the infection. REBOOT concludes with 'Jericho Rose'. By now the pandemic is over and it's time to rebuild. However, there are a selfish few who seek to exploit the situation for their own ends and this risks losing the little that's left.
Phill's fourth novel, 'The God Jar', is a tale of magic and mystery which straddles 16th century Europe and 20th century England. John Dee, Elizabethan sorcerer and mystic, finds a jar which he discovers has supernatural powers. 400 years later it resurfaces when a pair of honeymooners come across it on a diving trip. But have they found the jar or has it found them?
In 'What Dreams We Had!' a group of young people are offered a fantastic holiday in Italy, but once there they are forced to confront uncomfortable truths about who they are and what's important to them, and to wonder whether anything they thought was real actually is.
In 'I Know What You're Thinking' a pair of teenagers share the ability to see into each other's mind. When one of them is kidnapped the other must use this gift to find them, but nothing is easy in this taut thriller.
The Leopard's Bane series consists of 3 titles which tell the story of a family feud and a struggle between two brothers, one bent on selfish advancement and the other seeking to correct a corrupt society.
'Butterflies' is the tale of a girl from a sheltered background and her trials in attempting to come to terms with the world.
Phill has also written a book of short stories, 'Undiscovered Countries' which is free to subscribers to his his email newsletter. Details are on his website.
Phill is a member of The Society of Authors, The Alliance of Independent Authors, Promoting Yorkshire Authors, Sheffield Authors, and The British Library.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2023Two brothers. Two wives. Honor and cruelty.
Gangs in Charmis - boys from wealthy families, are hunting small children; children sneaking into the city from the river banks, forced by Scorpion. These gangs are killing the young thieves.
Ragul constantly bullies his younger half brother, Peglar. Their failing father forces Peglar to undergo the Initiation, to become eligible to inherit.
While training, Peglar befriends Yalka, a young girl from outside the city. Yalka helps to remove the blinders from Peglar's naïve eyes - forcing him to take an honest look at his life and family.
A wonderful setup to a new series - I loved Peglar, Yalka and her young brother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bad blood
Phill Featherstone’s latest work is a step into the fantasy genre. Its focus is the city of Chamaris where an ageing king has two sons. The elder, Ragul, is ruthless and cruel. The younger, Peglar, is sensitive but naive. The book starts with a shocking murder and ends with a banishing. In between the author takes time to describe in detail the central places of this city world, the people who populate it and the social conventions and rituals that govern it, so that we build a vivid mental picture of the setting. The plot takes shape around the bitter struggle between the two sons, as the ruthless one uses whatever means possible to prevent the other from gaining his share of inheritance and succeeding the king. That struggle is not the only thing that Peglar must contend with. A girl from the city slums opens his eyes to the terrible injustices of a system he had never questioned before.
The Poisoned Garden is the first book of a trilogy. I hope the coming two are as good. Five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars tale of truth and justice, lies and injustice, pride and prejudice
Pelgar is a bookworm and interested in the physical challenges necessary for him to be initiated into manhood and citizenship - prerequisites for inheritance. His half-brother has always bullied him, but in his innocence doesn't recognise the poison in his step mother's side of the family, or indeed in the privelege that his family takes for granted...
Until he meets Yelka, a girl from the wrong side of the wall, a girl who's lost so much to his family, but still becomes a friend, and in many ways a teacher about the reality of the City.
I almost missed this one, because blurb, cover and title didn't capture me immediately - but then I saw it was a Wishing Shelf finalist.
I'm glad I took the plunge, and look forward to the next instalment. I enjoyed the depth and strength of the characters, and that the villains were also well drawn rather than the exaggerated caracatures so common in the fantasy genre.
Don't judge a book by its cover!
