About the author

As a child, Rick Griffin frequently played out elaborate stories with stuffed animals and became weird in the head due to it and associated traumas. Therefore he decided that when he grew up, he would tell stories for a living and also become a real live dragon, or perhaps a kangaroo. Naturally, everyone shook their head at the young boy’s naivete, since as adults they knew that it was impossible to write stories as one’s sole career. They calmly explained that maybe he should get a day job as well.
The whole “day job” thing didn’t pan out. Now as the artist and author of Traitors Thieves and Liars, Housepets!, A&H Club, and other stories and comics, he is ultimately responsible for instigating too many worlds.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTraitors, Thieves and Liars is the first book in a trilogy set in artist Rick Griffin’s Hayven Celestia universe. The genre is SF space opera, with most of the action taking place on a large generational ship crewed by geroo, furry mammals that look like a cross between a kangaroo and a bear (think kangaroo body, head and tail, and bear legs). Besides the geroo, there are also ringel (ring-tailed lemurs), geordians (cats), dog-like anups, and enormous dragon-like Krakun, who are the literal heavies in the story.
While it’s not absolutely necessary to be familiar with the Hayven Celestia universe to enjoy this book, it does help. I would particularly recommend reading Greg Luterman’s Skeleton Crew first, which takes place on same ship some years ago, and gives an excellent introduction to the life of the geroo on the White Flower II. While the geroo are theoretically employees of their Krakun overlords, they’re actually slaves, living on their ship for generations, searching for new worlds for the Krakun to terraform. The Krakun are not benevolent employers, routinely terrorizing, maiming and killing the geroo at the slightest real or perceived infraction. Everyone on the ship is promptly ‘recycled’ at age 60, and births are allowed only to replace recycled workers.
The main hold the Krakun have over the geroo is control of ‘the trinity’ on their ship—the engine, the recycler and the gate that leads from the ship back to the Krakun homeworld. All three need to be on for the ship to function, and despite their best efforts to figure it out, the technology to subvert that safeguard has been beyond the geroo’s reach.
The current captain of the White Flower II, the geroo Ateri, is nearing sixty. For years he and some of the ship’s other officers have been working on a way to subvert the trinity and escape the Krakun’s control. But after seeing the horrible punishment inflicted on another geroo ship for the same plot, the captain reluctantly decides to abandon the plan, much to the dismay of his fellows, particularly Gert, who is in line to take over as captain.
But after the White Flower II discovers a new planet, they’re contacted by a mixed-species group of space pirates who make them an offer they can’t refuse: freedom from the Krakun in exchange for a Krakun terraforming device. But if the plot fails, the Krakun will probably kill everyone on the ship in retaliation. Should the captain risk everyone’s life without their consent, on the word of pirates who are probably not trustworthy?
Despite the hard SF premise, the book itself concentrates on the characters and their relationships, including romantic relationships. Gert in particular gets to see a lot of action, in and out of the bedroom. It’s not explicit stuff, but it is there. Despite all the characters being furry aliens, they generally act in human ways, so don’t expect bizarre, truly alien creatures. That also applies to the Krakun, which I had a bit of a problem with. For immortal beings with extraordinary technology, they’re surprising petty, vindictive and cruel, behaving like school yard bullies.
Any quibbles aside, this is a fun read, enhanced by the author’s excellent artwork (no questions about what the characters look like!) Strap in and enjoy the ride.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the first novel I've read by Rick Griffin, but I've seen his works in comics and illustrations with anthropomorphic animals for years.
There's many interesting moments through the book which I don't want to spoil, but I'll say that in some occasions I was screaming internally at what was going on. Because of it, I ended up rushing to the end in less than a week. The plot was definitely well written.
I enjoyed the interactions between the Geroo crew and the new "members". I really liked the addition of Inzari to the story.
I might be in the minority, but I'm not a fan of long winded descriptions of the surroundings and this book had a few. That's not necessarily a bad thing, and perhaps most people enjoy it. My imagination isn't that good to picture all the stuff happening or the characters appearance. This is lessened for me thanks to the illustrations included, plus several other drawings in his galleries. They really helped in increasing the tension during some crucial parts.
Although this book is a standalone, I think that reading "Skeleton Crew" - a novel by Gre7g set on the same ship years earlier - helps you connect more with the Geroos' hardships as it provides extra world-building and context.
The short story included was a great addition too. I wasn't expecting that ending for Sarsuk.
I totally recommend it, and now I'm waiting for the next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFirstly, the book is a good romp - some sci-fi adventure, harrowing challenges, a little romantic drama, a nice mix of things for this sort of yarn. If you're looking for a *complete* story, this isn't it, just the first part of a longer tale. Rather than three separate stories with interconnected elements and characters, however, the author has elected to zoom in further and tell a longer, more detailed story of a single plot, stretched over multiple books. This is a pretty neat idea, and I appreciated the depth this gave some characters and how often people could stretch their dramatic legs, as it were, but despite this approach there is one spot I had a little trouble with.
Without spoilers, two of the main characters end up romantically entangled...sort of...to a degree. Their relationship seems to change somewhat but we're never really shown any reason why beyond their sexual relationship. I dunno, maybe because this is my first exposure to Griffin's Hayven Celestia setting I'm unaware of some cultural facets of the various species involved, but even for the early, fairly shallow relationship involved things seem a little off, somehow. Perhaps our fiction culture at large trains us to expect more dramatic gestures of affection than the more subtle angle Griffin employs.
Otherwise, everything else in the book was great and I enjoyed it aplenty. And the inclusion of the short story after the main book was nice, giving some context to some things hinted at in the main novel, but not particularly necessary enough to that plot to include in the novel itself, while also setting up some hints (perhaps?) for stories yet to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI bought this one a while back, and read through it voraciously. Now that I am reading "Reapers Lottery" (a book that shares this universe) written by Gre7g Luterman, I finally remembered to write a proper review for this:
This book is very well paced and thought out. It conveys a world full of detail without getting tripped up by excess exposition, and also manages to present a range of emotional tones that blend together with the scene.
The way that a bit of organic chemistry is used every so often for both humor and plot is particularly delightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fully characterized sci-fi adventure
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a series that prides itself in fully fleshed-out and well developed characters, endearing them for how they each partake in the struggling life of a cosmos dominated by space overlords in their own ways. Neither of them are necessarily correct, nor incorrect, which makes it very compelling. The Final Days of the White Flower II presents itself in a more episodic fashion than most serials I have read, creating a larger sensation to yearn for more. The sci-fi elements are not overly complex, taking a secondary position to the "nudist befurred folk politics." This is to the book's advantage for readers such as myself, in which I find the story-telling more easily digestable and more immersive than if it were bloated with techno-babble.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love the BEST sci-fi, you can't miss this work!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIn this first adventure as full-length novelist, Rick Griffin writes and illustrates a wide tableau of situation and characters, each perfectly fitting its role in a daring plot to rescue a ship of slaves from the talons of their slavers!
The hero himself is a threedimensional figure, daring and bold, yet cute and humble, living of his own responsibilities but not without his defects, able to fight is battle but always in need of a good bunch to support him in the most dangerous situations.
The author has one rare talent of mixing comedy, drama, science, space opera, sex and action without one of these elements prevailing on the others.
And there's not a moment that will leave you boring or wondering. All you have to do, from page one, is to join the crew of the White Flower II in their pursuite of hope and freedom.
Even when hope is the first to die...
