TLDR: The Sword of Mercy and Wrath is a quick, exciting read and promising debut from a talented author. While its fast pacing doesn't allow much room for a deep dive into most of the characters/situations, it does add to the thrilling action sequences and frenetic conflicts.
Let's start with the plot:
Our story centers around a squire, Tristain and an orphan, Selene. As the novel opens, we find Tristain in service to a knight as both of them have been mobilized to conflict against a rival kingdom. We quickly learn Tristain harbors a damning secret and his arc kicks off from there as he tries to keep his secret while weathering the storm of war around him.
Selene, by contrast, begins the story in her home, being a ward of Tristain's family. Tragedy ensues, and Selene loses an arm. Having nowhere else to go, she joins a religious order dedicated to hunting werewolves and her arc kicks off from there.
Koussis covers a wide range of topics in this tale, ranging from realizing one's own identity, to the dangers of institutionalized religious zealotry and all the political ramifications of that. He also does a good job of showcasing the nuances of morality, showing us plenty of shades of gray instead of a typical "good vs. evil" dichotomy. The themes present here are a HUGE highlight and do a great job keeping the reader engaged.
I enjoyed the broader strokes of the plot as well as the more intricate details Koussis weaves in. Of particular note are the delicious melancholy twists along the way. Some of these twists, along with other revelations would've probably felt more impactful if the pacing slowed a bit in order to provide more buildup.
On that note, let's talk about my one criticism with the novel: its pacing.
This novel moved at breakneck speed, which bolstered the wonderfully-written action sequences, of which there were many. That being said, I think the speed at which we move through scenes doesn't allow us to spend enough time with the characters to get a sense for the nuances of their characterizations and attach ourselves to them. This becomes more apparent when those bonds are put to the test in the aforementioned beautifully designed twists and turns, which Koussis executes well. If we had more breathing room to get to know the cast, these unexpected outcomes and moments of strife would hit like an absolute freight train, which shows Koussis possesses obvious talent as a story crafter. All in all, if not for this Achilles heel, I could easily see this novel as a 4.5-5 star read.
On a more positive note, let's briefly talk about the action sequences. This novel is FULL of action, be it sweeping battles of warring knights or hand-to-hand training sequences between religious zealots. Koussis definitely keeps things exciting with these stimulating scenes.
Lastly, I've got to talk about my favorite aspect of the novel, the WEREWOLVES!!! Everytime one of these creatures shows up, they steal the show. Koussis does a good job at providing weight to the deadly capabilities and imposing presence these monsters possess. I loved it. Rest assured, any of you who are yearning to read about some classically terrifying, yet strangely majestic, wolf monsters will have a good time here.
All in all, I think this is a promising debut and a good start to a series that shows promise. With a few tweaks and refining of obvious talent, I could easily see this series becoming something truly special. Well done, NC Koussis!
***Disclaimer***
I've found out the author is rereleasing this first installment, so my critiques may have already been addressed by the time you've read this. Either way, if you're a fan of monster fantasy, especially werewolves, you should pick this one up.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2022Well this is the time of year to read about vampires, demons, angels, ghosts, and werewolves. In this book werewolves are the focus here. But they aren’t mindless killers really. You must read to find out more about their kind. They are as different as individual persons.
Then there is the Order of the Golden Swords, who sanction themselves to hunt and kill these beings. They are above any law or government. Selene, our protagonist, is rescued by one of them and indoctrinated into the Order. She only believes these creatures are evil until an event happens and she changes her mind. But this doesn’t come about for most of the story. We meet interesting side characters during her hunt.
We see the eventual meeting of Tristain and Selene, which doesn’t go well for Tristain. But because of the great knight, Leon’s, earnest history lesson told to Selene, she starts to question the Order’s ways and decisions. Leon is a wonderful character.
A slight disappointment is the quick deaths of some characters. They had it coming for sure. Don’t get me wrong, but a longer fight would have made it a more satisfying demise. Overall, the writing is very good and engaging. There’s enough worldbuilding to keep you interested, and the characters are the best part of the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2022The Sword of Mercy and Wrath by NC Koussis is the first book in The Swords of Dominion series and was an impulse read for me. When I saw that the story consisted of werewolves and assassins, I knew I had to push it up the TBR. Overall, I am very happy I took a chance on this book. It is a solid start to what I feel could be a really fantastic series. I truly think that NC Koussis has something special here. The world he has crafted is a beautiful and twisted combination of fun and horrific, even despite its issues.

If you like the old-world Warhammer Fantasy. You will probable like this book!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2022This is a short, fast paced piece of dark fantasy that kicks off and never slows down. I loved the Selene character, who has a full arc of both terrible deeds and redemption. The characters are all pretty great.
I do wish he had slowed down to provide more background and world building, but if you like myths and werewolves and tons of action, this is a great book to check out!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2022I'd seen this book around a lot and was excited to give it a read. The cover is gorgeous. Koussis has created a dark world with werewolves and a religious Order bent on fighting them. The author holds no punches in this world that shows that nature is red in tooth and in claw. The concept of the werewolves isn't necessarily an original one but it didn't feel overdone and worked very well in this world, so no complaints there. Leon was one of my favorite characters next to Selene, and it was nice to see a one-arm protagonist fighting. The reveal of Tristain being a werewolf was a nice surprise and seeing Selene having to choose between family and duty really got to me.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2023Lots of action and the opening to the story is solid. But as the story shifts from the lead male to the lead female character I just didn't find it believable.
Now I've had this ebook in my library for a while and I think the author has done an expanded edition since I picked this one up. So go read some of the other newer reviews as well before deciding.
I found myself questioning why our leading lady was making the decisions she did from pretty early on. I didn't feel like her character was set up nearly as well as the lead male was. It pulled me out of the story and I found myself less and less willing to keep reading.
The writing quality is fair for a fast passed grimdark fantasy. Nothing immaculate but not bad either. If you like straightforward prose you will appreciate this author's style.
So all in all just not for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic novel! Totally entertaining, fast paced and original.
Looking at the existing reviews, it is almost daunting to write my own. But this isn't about me and my insecurities, it's about the amazing novel NC Koussis has put together. To make a long story short, the book wholly deserves a 5 star rating, even with the few criticisms I'll touch upon at the end of this review.
There are a few things I look for in a fantasy novel, and The Sword of Mercy and Wrath (I'm going to be lazy and call it "Mercy and Wrath" from here on) delivers on all of them. The pace is fast, but slows down enough at critical moments to go in-depth in character development, history and imagery. The world Koussis has created for this novel is alive and realistic, filled with regular and not so regular people going about their business. There's no holier-than-thou characters to be found, and everyone exists on a moral spectrum that will surprise you. The main characters struggle with their place in the world, make bad decisions, and discover themselves in the story's course.
The premise of werewolves not only existing, but living amongst regular people, is very well developed. Are they evil? Maybe, maybe not. It's up to the reader to discover this for themselves, together with Tristain and Selene, the main characters.
So, original story, good pace, great world-building, deep character development (and did I mention the awesome cover?). What more could you want?
Two things, actually.
At times, the pace of the story gets a little too fast, and seems to skip a beat here and there. Nothing that will seriously affect the story, but there are times where I would have liked a bit more elaboration, a bit more back story, even a bit more filler. If you've seen Lord of the Rings, and then watch the extended version, I think you know what I mean.
Related, I think the ending of the book could have been spun out a bit longer. The villain is revealed, then dealt with, just a bit too quickly for me.
Raymond E. Feist revisited his Magician novel in time and basically added back what he had edited out in the earlier edition. I'd very much love for Koussis to do the same for Mercy and Wrath.
In conclusion, a fantastic novel well worth reading! As is The Sword of Salt and Smoke, btw. But that's a review for another time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, wish it was bigger.
It's funny to read this book now, because I just finished another one that had the exact opposite problem as this one. While the other was too long and had two superfluous characters, The sword of mercy and wrath could be very well 100 pages longer.
The character motivations and conflicts are well stablished in the beginning, but on later chapters the book pick up to a pace of a character doubting her life long vows to changing alliances in the space of 5 pages.
That is not to say it is poorly written or that it doesn't make sense. It's just that it happens so fast it is not given the proper time to the importance of the scene.
Instead of "too long didn't read", it's closer to "wish there was more".
