A heartbreaking and immersive historical novel from bestseller Siobhan Daiko

1944 - When an air raid strikes the hospital she’s been working in, Carrie’s life irrevocably changes. But as a nurse in the middle of wartime, she has no time to grieve, as she has too many people relying on her.

For resistance fighter, Vito, nothing is more important than seeking vengeance for the atrocities his fellow comrades have suffered. But when he liberates a convent, finding a group of Jewish children in hiding, he suddenly has even more to fight for.

Little Mimi is injured, scared and alone. Together Carrie and Vito vow to find her parents, a loving home. But under the shadow of war, is it wise to make promises you’re not sure you can keep?

A powerful story of the strength of the human spirit that will delight fans of Kristin Hannah, Fiona Valpy and Rhys Bowen

Excellent story about a Jewish Orphan and how her life turns out.

Army nurse Carrie Adams is assigned to a unit in Italy, where she treats wounded soldiers and even a little girl named Mimi. They don't know what happened to Mimi's parents, who were Jewish, until nearly the end of the story, in which the medical unit follows the fighting. It's also a love story, but the letters between Carrie and her lover, or even home to her parents, were censored and so don't think they could have revealed so much information. This is a compelling historical novel.

I love reading historical fiction, but have difficulty when the language and facts in the book do not align with the time period. I wanted to love this book but felt I was reading a book for middle schoolers. The sentence structure etc. was simplistic in nature. The language and phrases used were inaccurate for the times. The phrase "stay at home mothers" wasn't even in use until the 1980s and yet it was in the narrative. I cringed when one of the characters said "Hey, dude". The main character was likeable and as the reader, I became attached to her character. The letters she sent to and received from her boyfriend, showed the lack of understanding of the conditions of WWII. The letters contained information about where each character was located and other war information. The censors would never have allowed that during the war and those sentences would have been censored. Although Florence was spared from bombings, it is hard to believe that during the war one could just walk into a shop and buy new dolls, clothes and all of the other items that the main character just ran out and purchased when she wanted. Overall, the idea of the story was good, but I kept getting mad as I read the inaccuracies. So disappointing.

I really loved this story and think the author did a great job depicting that historical period of time. I like the good ending.

The Tuscan Orphan is an interesting story focused on helping one little orphan girl during the war, not knowing if her parents were alive or not, or what had happened to them. It provides a basis for a story of providing help to her during the horrors inflicted by war. It also focused on a developing romance during the process of helping the little girl.
I had a difficult time reading The Tuscan Orphan due to all the references to the various military groups - Allies, Germans, Italians, Yugoslavs, and partisans, and all their movements, battles, relocations, etc. I also found it difficult to relate to all the different geographic settings and detailed descriptions, which became almost meaningless because I couldn't relate to them. And finally, I did not care to read about the sexual occurrences that took place in the novel.
For someone familiar with Italy, or wanting to know more about the country, its geography, sites, and history, this novel would provide some information about the country.

It's the little things that make a good story. With Allied and partisan collaboration, an orphans life is spared. Now, that's love.

I liked this story very much. However, I question the assumption that a Jewish WWII orphan could be easily adopted by an Italian gentile couple. I think the Jewish organizations at the time would have forbidden it and found suitable related or non related Jewish parents for the child irregardless of sentiments to the contrary of the child and parents involved. Very sad but very true.

The Tuscan Orphan by Siobhan Daiko is a captivating historical fiction novel set during World War II. Through the eyes of Carrie, a dedicated American nurse, readers are taken on an emotional journey filled with love, heartbreak, and the enduring spirit of humanity.

The bonds that form between Carrie, Vito and Mimi are heartwarming and beautifully portrayed, showcasing the power of love and compassion even in the darkest of times. Daiko's storytelling prowess shines through in her ability to seamlessly weave historical events and details into the narrative. The vivid descriptions of the Italian landscape and the historical context of World War II add depth and authenticity to the story. I found myself fully immersed in the era, feeling the weight of the war and its impact on the characters' lives.

The Tuscan Orphan is a poignant and emotionally charged novel that explores the human spirit's resilience in the face of adversity and I was hooked from start to finish.
