Unmasking a Duke Kindle Edition
Andrew Stephens is happy with his life as the brother of the Duke of Elenford. He is responsible. Respectable. Nothing like his scandalous rake of a brother. When the duke finally goes too far and his life is put into danger, Andrew decides he has no choice but to make amends and determine who is threatening his brother’s life. He has a plan, and sees no impediments -- until he takes his brother's place at a masquerade ball and meets a woman who takes his breath away and haunts his dreams. As his feelings for her develop from attraction to passionate romance, he yearns for the day his own name leaves her lips; yet fears the truth will drive her away.
Arabella Marley's father has made a grave mistake, gambling away one of his family's most precious heirlooms to the notorious Duke of Elenford. His pride refuses to allow him to lose it forever -- even if it means using his daughter's charms to recover it.
Andrew and Arabella are both determined to resist their growing desire for the one they must eventually betray. Will they find love strong enough to handle the truth, or will their hidden secrets keep them apart forever?
This is a steamy Regency romance.

About the author

Ellie has always loved reading, writing, and history. For many years she has written short stories, non-fiction, and can hardly believe that she is now living out her dream writing historical romance.
In every era there is the chance for romance, and Ellie enjoys exploring many different time periods, cultures, and geographic locations. No matter when or where, love can always prevail. She has a particular soft spot for the bad boys of history, and can't help but write of strong, feisty heroines.
Ellie and her husband love nothing more than spending time at home with their two sons and Husky cross. Ellie can typically be found at the lake in the summer, pushing the stroller all year round, and, of course, with her computer in her lap or a book in hand.
Hearing from readers always makes her day!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2018Ms. St. Clair writes a very entertaining story about two people who have not so nice relative's. Andrew and Arrabella meet at a mask ball but they do not reveal their true identities. She thinks he is the Duke whom her father force's her to meet in order to get a family item back after losing it to the Duke in a poker game. Andrew is trying to find out who is sending threatening notes to the Duke for this ruining and disgracing his family so pretends he is the Duke to try and draw out the note writer. Arrabella and Andrew are instantly drawn to each other.
This is a great short story that will have you turning the pages til the end.

Arabella’s father put the family heirloom necklace on the card table, and lost it to the Duke of Elenford. So, he orders his marriage-age daughter to get it back by whatever means necessary, since the Duke is supposed to be a rake. Meanwhile the Duke of Elenford has been getting threatening letters by someone he apparently wronged, so the Duke of Elenford is sent away to Scotland, and his brother Andrew investigates and tries to make amends for all the wrong the Duke has done in hopes that one of the people he smooths over is the author of the threatening letters. Being the second born son, he has been overlooked all of his life, and decides to take up an invitation to a masked party and walk an evening in his brother’s shoes as the Duke. Arabella’s father takes her to the party and pushes her to entice the rakish Duke, and even though his brother Andrew is not a rake, he is drawn to Arabella and continues to woo her under the title of the Duke.
Unmasking the Duke is a sweet (not clean though) romance between two shy people. I liked both Andrew and Arabella even though they were a bit generic for their character types without anything all that special about them. He’s the typical overlooked handsome gentleman lord who typically is enchanted by the heroine at first sight. And the heroine is the typical beautiful shy wallflower who has to pluck up her courage. I liked the intrigue and suspense of what would happen when their lies come to light. And it irked me when Arabella stormed out when it came to light that he wasn’t the Duke. She didn’t storm out because of the lie about his station but because he lied about who he was. Still, that seemed a minor thing than her engaging in a relationship mainly to retrieve the family heirloom, without exchanging it for the money that it represents. It’s as good as stealing. And yet that didn’t seem to bother Andrew in the slightest, considering that her heart wasn’t in the relationship at the beginning, just nefarious purposes. I will say there was one scene in the garden (that went beyond just a kiss) that felt like it was added in later. Like someone told the author after the story had been written that the historical romance readers need more than just a kiss. So, it feels a bit out of step with the rest of the story which was entirely innocent (except for at the end). And it’s not even referenced later, just the kiss part, which felt tame to the rest of that scene. And the whole plot thread that the real Duke was sent away because he was being threatened felt largely forgotten through the story with only a mention or two about trying to smooth things over felt almost like an afterthought rather than the crux of the plot. The version I obtained ended at the 60% mark with the rest being a sample of another story.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2017A nice story that did not drag out with misunderstandings as some stories do. Young women with little or no options for standing up to abusers must have had a difficult life in Recency times.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2017Tragedy stuck a young man that changed his outlook on life and his appearance. Because of the change to his appearance he chose to hide himself away from the world. But a opportunity to marry thru deceptive means changed his life once again. This is a twist on the story of beauty and the beast. Love conquers all and gives meaning to a life that was hopeless. This is a love story that withstood the constraints of the era.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2017A young lady who has been kept from society is forced by her father an Earl, to go to a ball to meet a Duke who has won a family heirloom necklace from him. The Earl feels it was stolen by cheating and wants her to get it back. Instead without knowing it she meets his brother.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2020Well, the Duke is not really ‘the Duke’ but his brother, Andrew. The real Duke was incognito to Scotland since he stirred up so much scandal in London. But the fake duke fell in love with a baroness named Arabella, but couldn’t reveal himself due to him being the not real Duke. Iiieee! In any case, all this fuss was due to the baron, Arabella’s father, gambling away a family heirloom, therefore he was forcing her to ‘get to know’ the Duke thinking Andrew was the real Duke with the sordid reputation. Anyhooo, the great HEA at the end seems to find everything straightened out for the fake Duke, the real Duke and the daughter of the Baron (the Baron, ahaha, being the one to mistreat his daughter, Arabella) did not get his HEA yay! You must read this for yourself because you may be totally confused by my review. However, I’m not confused because I read the thing.
(P.S., if you want to read only the clean version then I would suggest to stop reading before the last section, otherwise you will get the explicit wedding night romp in full color.)
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2022A historical romance of great unlikelihood. A man masquerades as his brother the duke. An innocent is thrown to the mercy of said duke with an evil reputation by her dissolute father. The characters are likeable. The story is puffery but pleasant enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2022I will definitely recommend this book to my friends. Ms St. Clair has written a remarkable story full of intriguing twists and turns.
