☆ A Buzzfeed top 40 of 2019 Must Read Romance☆

Movie star 101: A smile hides all pain.

Quellcrist King has been playing a part his entire life. The more famous he becomes, the more he hides. The only person he ever let see the real him rose with him from nothing to the very top.

They were the king and queen of Hollywood— and then she wanted a divorce. The only way to survive his depression is to bury himself in work. If he can be a character, maybe he won’t have to remember himself. A gay role can’t be any different than playing a straight one, can it?

But instead of finding solace in the character, he finds it in his costar. Hale becomes his best friend, his lifeline, the light in his darkness. Quell is forced to examine everything he thought he knew about himself while filming intimate scenes with Hale that feel more real than anything ever has before.

He’s lived his entire life following the script. What would life be like unscripted?

Review

"I loved every word of this delicious slow-burn romance. Unscripted is unputdownable friends-to-lovers goodness, and the most fun I've had reading in ages." -- USA Today Bestselling Author Ella James

"
This book is pure beauty! I want to read it again." - Goodreads reviewer

I loved everything about this book.
Quell and Hale were amazing characters, complex and engaging. I really enjoyed seeing Quell and Hale's relationship grow and blossom from friendship to something so much more. A great combination of GFY, self-discovery, friendship, and love. -- Amazon review

I so loved this book and these characters.
The friendship and the respect these men had for each other was incredible. Hale was able to be there for Quell in ways no other could. He could sense when Quell needed him and was able to be there for him even if he was crushing on him. The way J.R. Gray tackled depression was so real. It gave life to a real issue. And hearing things from Quell really made me aware. Through this true friendship something had to forge, and Quell didn't shy away from something he didnt know about. He fell in love with Hale who just so happen to be a man. I couldn't get enough of them. At the end of the day love is love no matter what form it comes in. -- Amazon Review

Quellcrist King is an actor at the top of his game, but he’s been part of a couple for so long that his strong relationship with his actress wife is part of their brand—except that brand has broken beyond repair. Struggling with the anxiety and depression that’s always been part of him, he chooses a new project to take his mind off the fact that his wife of ten years wants a divorce...but not until her latest movie comes out. In her eyes, it’s all about the publicity, and a divorce right now wouldn’t look good—even though she’s the one who asked for it.

The project Quell chooses is a fantasy gay romance, with him playing one of the leads, even though he’s as straight as they come. Finding a costar that he can develop enough chemistry with to make the sex scenes work isn’t easy—until Hale shows up for a casting call. Hale is hoping for a bit part with a few speaking lines, but the tall, handsome actor somehow clicks perfectly with Quell. In their first interaction in character, Hale blows Quell away—he becomes the pirate, and beneath Hale’s perfect approach, Quell embraces his own character, well aware they’ve found their second lead.

He also finds himself questioning his own sexuality. His inner turmoil is powerful and feels so real for a man who has always loved his wife and identified entirely as a heterosexual male.

I could not set this book aside, which is difficult when you don’t have the time to sit and read it in one sitting, but the characters in this story are so strong, and for both of the men, their inner turmoil and often deeply personal confusion absolutely spot on, that even when I wasn’t reading, I was thinking about them. By the time I finished the story, Quell and Hale had gone well beyond characters and were more like intimate friends I was cheering for as the story raced to the end.

J.R. Gray is a “new to me” author (and as I’ve said before, a big reason why I love BookBub) but I have already purchased his next book in the series, REWRITTEN (Unscripted: Book 2) which releases June 4. I’m really glad it will be here next week—I don’t want to wait any longer than I have to. And yes, I highly recommend this first in the series. UNSCRIPTED by J.R. Gray is beautifully written and an absolutely perfect read.

I’m mad I didn’t read this sooner. Quell and Hale had such an effortless friendship and I loved watching it grow to more. Navigating the subject of depression was handled with such care and knowledge and I really appreciated that. It was fun to watch the characters film their series. As those characters’ relationship grew so did our two MCs. Very nice parallel.

I loathe Rachel. She was so well written. Looking forward to the next book.

I picked up JR's books with the Pretty series and I love his writing so much I'm going back to his older books. This was a story filled with so much beauty and emotion. Hale and Quell had immediate chemistry, but their love story develops slowly. Quell tries to keep up appearances placating his soon to be ex-wife, while hiding a debilitating battle with depression and anxiety. A beautiful love story unfolds with patient and supportive Hale by his side. You wish nothing more for the both of them to get their HEA, but Quell needs to face his depression head on or risk losing the love of his life.

I liked the story, and the characters.
I liked the slow burn friendship and romance.
I liked that they had pretend sex for the show, and that make Quell realise he wanted real sex with Hale.

There was quite a bit that I liked about this story.

But..what I was not so keen on was the difficulty I had in the actual reading of the book.
Without going into massive amounts of detail, these are the issues I had:

    1) I struggled to remember whose POV I was in, and sometimes I think the author did too (there was some grey areas). I kept having to go back to the start of the chapter to figure out whose POV I was in because it wasn't always obvious. The author didn't really use their names much (it was always just "I" and "he"), which didn't help, and there was not enough of a clear line of division in terms of character traits to assist with identifying who was speaking or "thinking" at any given point.

    2) The way the conversations flowed (or didn't) between Quell and Hale contributed to my confusion with who was saying what. That made it really hard to sink into the story, when I was constantly trying to figure out who was who.

    3) I found some of the writing to be a little disjointed and hard to follow. It would take me a couple of sentences or paragraphs to realise where the author was going with it, or what she meant.

    4) My copy of the Kindle book (bought Nov 2019) also had other issues (missing punctuation, incorrect words/spelling etc). For example in location 3323 where Quell "bared down". while getting it on with Hale. I would think it would be "bear down" in terms of exerting downward pressure (and not "bare" in terms of being naked), and past tense would be "bore down" perhaps? I just got kinda stuck on that sentence, trying to figure out why it looked so odd, until I realised it was the wrong word for the situation.

Okay, so I did end up going into some detail, but if the author reads does read this review, I hope she takes it as the constructive criticism it is intended to be.

I'm giving the book 3 stars because I really did like the story and the supporting characters and everything else. I just found it really difficult to sink into the story and let it take me away, because of the issues I encountered.
If not for that, this would have been a 5 star book for sure!

Best. Book. Ever. Gray is a new author to me and I’ll be reading his other books right after I finish writing this review.

Quell and Hale, an established Hollywood star and a newbie respectively, are caught up in the chaos and stress of relentless paparazzi while their relationship grows and eventually deepens. There are the inevitable bumps along the way to their happily-ever-after. The situation is complicated by Quell’s dysfunctional and deteriorating relationship with his self-serving wife who is herself a Hollywood star. The dialogue between the two main characters is realistic. The reader feels the heartbreak and celebrates with them when Quell decides to publicly acknowledge his relationship with Hale. There are two significant supporting characters, Mel and Ella, who are so well written and who enhance the story.

Unscripted is a wonderful tale. Five stars. Read it.

I don't think I missed a single word throughout this book. After reading so many books where there is endless sex that you end up flicking pages to get back to the story. This book is refreshing. What a great story. I'm not even bothered it's a HFN ending. The characters are just so real and their chemistry is off the charts. The story is beautifully written and I didn't want the book to end. I'm definitely reading book 2. These guys are addictive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story
Reviewed in Canada on June 16, 2020
Good story. This version is edited and has no spelling mistakes so you can discount previous comments about that. This is anninteresting story about the MC that suffers from depression (long standing illness) and how he struggles through a break up from a very ling relationship to find love with a man. So you have the MC, depressed like usual, but now unstable following a bad breakup where he’s rejected by his ex because of his issues and now questioning his sexual orientation.
The author makes him look like he is either demi or pansexual because he needs to know the person to be attracted or fall in love. The story was interesting but it doesn’t pull you in, the reader doesn’t feel part of the story. You still want to know what happens in the story but you are not engaged, it’s like reading through a window.
It’s a good story, story line is ok, it’s a valid take on depression but it makes it look a bit like affection/love dependent and doesn’t really give more information on why and how the MC feels other than depressed, triggered... these words don’t mean anything for someone that hasn’t suffered depression.

More vocabulary to express the emotions of the main characters and explanation may have helped the story telling. The author specified that depression is individual and cannot be treated the same way for everyone, you have to have treatment personalised because everyone lives it differently. That is something I learnt and it makes sense that there is no “one fit all” because the author couldn’t explain the struggle plainly enough or make the reader relate and engaged/invested in the story.
