In Your Eyes Kindle Edition
She needs health insurance. He needs a wedding date.
Two problems, one solution: she’ll pretend to be his girlfriend in exchange for legally marrying her.
Rapidly approaching age twenty-six, chronically ill Hannah Reilly doesn’t have a lot of options. She’ll be forced off her parents’ insurance on her birthday, and having Lupus and Sjogren’s means she needs top tier healthcare. While her freelancing job offers flexibility and a creative outlet, it comes at a steep price: no benefits. She’s not sure she can afford an insurance plan that’s not tied to a job on top of the prices of medication, rent, and more.
All hope seems lost until Caleb O’Connor–her old high school friend and the boy next door–returns to town and comes up with a plan that’s so outrageous, it just might work. Having sworn off love and marriage, Caleb has no problem getting married in name only in order to add Hannah to his insurance plan, and he’s willing to do just about anything to get his family off his back about finding a partner–even pretending he has one.
Their convoluted deal ends up working out well…maybe a little too well. Lines are crossed. Edges are blurred. Being forced to act like a couple arouses actual feelings, but figuring out what’s real and what’s not is no simple task. Can Hannah and Caleb detangle the layers of lies and deception that threaten to hurt not only them, but their loved ones as well? Or will it turn out their love is as fake as the rest of their agreement?
This book contains strong language and sexual content. The following topics are mentioned in some capacity: chronic illnesses (specifically Sjogren’s and Lupus), cancer, SIDS, loss of a sibling, loss of a child, infidelity (in the past, not one of the main characters).

- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2023Format: KindleI was so pleasantly surprised by this book! I didn't really know what to expect going in and this was my first book with the main character dealing with a chronic illness. I loved that aspect of the book - I feel like I learned so much about the struggles to live with being chronically ill - and the caretaker aspect from the MMC.
This book is definitely a slow burn and features one of my favorite tropes - friends to lovers. Throw in the marriage of convenience and fake dating and it was a win for me. The slow burn payoff was worth it, especially since the fact that the two main characters were friends, so that helped with building on their already strong relationship.
I would highly recommend this book and look forward to more from this author in the future!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2024Format: Kindlethere is nothing I love more than a friends to lovers SECRET marriage of convenience but also they’re gonna do a little fake dating?! With each book Molly just gets better, and I loved Hannah and Caleb’s story so much! I read it in just a couple of hours. And I know this one is close to her heart, and she wrote both Hannah and Caleb’s individual stories with so much love and care.
Watching Caleb come home and really kind of restart the grief process was so hard. But this time he had someone on the outside to lean on, and I think that helped him so much. Hannah let him sit in it when he needed, offered helpful encouragements when he needed, stood by him literally and figuratively when he needed. She was exactly what he needed in the same way he was for her! She finally had someone to care for her when she needed it. While she was very used to taking care of herself and her entire family, and she liked it, it was what she did. it was nice to be actually cared for. And Caleb did a BEAUTIFUL job.
And the two of them together?! They were perfect. They were kind of a…medium burn?? The first part they were heavy on the friends, then it quickly became clear they had FEELINGS, but what they had going on was way more important! So then the flirting and the tension and the practicing started?! And then the ACTING on the FEELINGS! It was so good!!
I can’t wait for whatever Molly does next! This is exactly what I needed to read today!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2023Format: PaperbackLoved reading this book, it was very informative on Hannah’s chronic illness and how she deals with it and also Caleb dealing with his grief. It was a bit emotional but at the same time very uplifting and hopeful. It is a slow burn and it is worth the wait.
The writing was amazing and had great character development. I love when authors add in some fun facts about the city they set their story on. I did Google the cow paths mention and it is a rumor.

Caleb and Hannah have incredible chemistry and connection.
Molly did a perfect job portraying the reality and truths of chronic illness. I was truly fascinated and in awe of Hannah’s strength and resilience.
And oh man, Caleb’s sweetness with how he cares for her is…everything!
This book has so many amazing feels…it’s emotional, heartwarming, and so swoony!
100% a top-rec and must-read book!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2024Format: KindleI thoroughly enjoyed this book. As someone who has family members who struggle with Lupus, it was such a great representation. I LOVED the characters, the spice was amazing 🌶🌶🌶 and when I tell you, my jaw DROPPED a couple of different times. The characters were flawed in such real ways, and I am so in love with Caleb. He is the sweetest! It was overall a great read, I'm usually an action-packed fantasy/smut girlie, so I was worried I wouldn't finish this, but I'm so glad I did! It's worth the read! Thank you, Molly!

I also have a chronic illness and the rep in this book is on point!
Aside from that aspect, the romance was adorable and the little twists here and there were perfectly timed! Can't wait to read more from this author
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2023Format: PaperbackOur premise involves reunited childhood friends Hannah & Caleb marrying so she can get his health insurance, then fake dating for a family wedding, and then (as it always goes!) real dating.
💞 I love a book with a lot of caretaking, because maybe I am secretly an acts of service girlie, and In Your Eyes delivered! I appreciate that in addition to Caleb caring for Hannah in more obvious ways (like ordering food and cleaning her apartment), she also helps him feel loved and supported in the ways he needs.
💞 Chronic illness rep! The FMC has Lupus & Sjogren’s, and runs a blog about life with chronic illness for a living. I think Molly McCarthy did a great job giving us a lot of information about how these affect Hannah (and others) while still having a story that was fun & sweet & sexy.
💞 This romance hits a lot of tropes (childhood friends reunited! Marriage of convenience! Fake dating!), but never felt like too much was crammed in there. There’s also some cute little kid characters, which are always a hit for me.
Shoutout to the author for sharing this ARC!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2023Format: KindleI received this as a free arc and absolutely loved it! Her writing style is great and it really makes you feel like you are at the waffle shop with the characters :) The romance is amazing and very realistic but I loved how she touched on heavy topics but did so with levity!

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a great romance with incredible chronic illness rep!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI loved this book! I read quickly and get through a lot of books in a month, and this was my favorite. The fact that there are books like this where both the author and main character have chronic illnesses and similar experiences to my own makes me feel so seen. Own voices books are so important.
Part of me feels like the caretaking trope in a book with a disabled lead should feel condescending and depending on who wrote it, it could be BUT the way it is done here is perfect. If someone showed up to clean and cook for me when I'm in a flare up like Caleb does for Hannah, I'd cry. I did actually tear up thinking about it as I read that part. Molly showed such care and Hannah's experience of this interaction is very relatable.
So much of the story is relatable. I highlighted so many sentences or paragraphs and then stopped reading eight chapters in to message Molly and thank her for her story when Hannah thought something that I've said out loud many times.
This is definitely one I'll be reading again and will add to my shelf. I am also looking forward to the second book that's in the works about Hannah's best friend Rhia. She brought the best mix of care and chaos to Hannah's life and is a romance writer who doesn't date, so I'm here for it.

One oddly specific trope that I have always loved is friends entering in a marriage of convenience it’s a cherry on cake when it’s because the MMC wants to take care of the FMC 😩

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read marriage of convenience
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis was a beautiful, #ownvoices, dual POV, fake dating, marriage of convenience for health insurance romance that has EXCELLENT chronic disability rep in the form of Lupus and Sjogren's.
I loved Hannah and Reilly and it was so fun seeing them reconnect after years apart, become friends again and pretend to fight their mutual attraction in order to help Hannah with health care and appease Caleb's meddling sister.
Swoony with a side of family drama, this was my first book by Molly McCarthy and I can't wait to read more!!
