A Practice Grammar of English Verbs is a practical grammar workbook published as a companion to the author's acclaimed concise reference grammar, A Descriptive Grammar of English, which came out in 2020.
*
Designed at the outset for students of English as a second or foreign language (EFL / ESL) at upper intermediate and advanced levels, this practice grammar is equally useful for native English speakers wanting to improve their writing skills and understand a bit more about English verbs.
*
Written in clear English and avoiding unnecessary linguistic jargon, the explanations aim to show how English grammar is an essentially simple system, not the complicated monster that it is sometimes made out to be.
*
With its clear and concise explanations of the grammar of English verbs – what verbs are, how they function, what tenses to use, and so on – this is a workbook that can be used as a standalone book, or in conjunction with the companion reference grammar which provides more detailed and extensive explanations of all the topics covered..

In this practice grammar, the nature and use of English verbs is presented point by point, following the order used in the reference grammar. Each section include a clear explanation, carefully chosen and appropriate examples, and as many exercises as are useful for the point in question. The type of exercises varies from point to point.

The answers to all the exercises are grouped together in the final section of this practice grammar, which also includes observations on potential difficulties and on cases where errors are most common.
