THESE VIOLENT ROOTS Kindle Edition
Grace Wolff spends her days fighting monsters, and her nights hiding from her own. As a public prosecutor in the sexual crimes unit, she knows more about rapists, pedophiles, and deviants than most people dare to consider.
Dr. Noah Wolff is as acquainted with monsters as his wife. While Grace dedicates her career to putting violent offenders away, Noah is more interested in rehabilitating them. A renowned psychiatrist specializing in sexual deviance, he counsels a burgeoning number of court-appointed patients wrestling with evil in its darkest form.
When Grace discovers a long line of pedophile suicides have been murders in disguise, she is duty-bound to aid in the investigation. But in her quest to track down the killer, Grace faces an ethical impasse. As a steward of the law, she has an obligation to seek justice for the murders. As a human being, she accepts that “innocent until proven guilty” is laden with loopholes criminals slip through too easily, and too often.
As she hunts the hunter, Grace is forced to acknowledge a complicated truth. To defeat the swell of monsters preying upon humanity’s most innocent, one must become a monster themselves.

About the author

I'm the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of close to three dozen books, ranging from Young Adult to Contemporary Romance.
Biographies are impossible for me to write without landing somewhere in the realm of lame. Which is ironic since I’m a writer attempting to, you know, do what I do and write. For whatever reason though, trying to sum up who I am is enough to make me rock myself into a psychiatric-something in a dark corner.
I could try explaining what I love: books, writing, adventures, the outdoors, animals, my family, my friends. I could list what I don’t love: hate, needles, narrow-mindedness, pantyhose, celery. I could go into my background and my sources of inspiration, sprinkling throughout witty bits of commentary and the expected author-fare of a few words that make a person scratch their head and reach for a dictionary. But the true biography of who I am is penned on the pages of my books, hidden between the words. Where I’ve been, who I am, where I’m going—it’s all there.
At the end of the day, I’m an open book.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseShe is a warn down mother, a desperate wife, and public prosecutor in her early forties striving for justice the best way she knows how by giving her clients a fair trial. He is a distant husband and father who spends more time away from home protecting his family. While away from home Noah can be found in an office or church working with the same pedophiles his wife puts away. When the system fails to keep these criminals behind bars Noah reforms and rehabilitates them back into society.
Grace Wolff prides herself on giving her clients a fair trial yet at home her daughter is doesn’t receive the same fair trial. Grace moved her from a public school to a private hoping the change would correct her behavior. At the age of twenty-two Grace had Andee. Andee was the result of an undergrad and graduate student drinking five too many drinks at a stupid frat party and decided getting it on in the back seat of Noah’s ’92 Camry. Noah’s a good guy by marrying Grace. The seventeen years of marriage hasn’t been easy, yet they’ve tried to do right by Andee providing a safe and loving environment unlike the one Grace grew up in. Her father a retired Honorable Judge noted Grace’s shortcomings as both a mother and prosecutor every time he saw her. Yet, when he needed favors he called upon her talents and skills as a steward of the law to assist in his task force. It’s the opportunity she’s been waiting for to prove to her father that she is a successful prosecutor. While she infused her life searching for a serial killer who was killing pedophiles it gave her life purpose in the most unlikely of ways. She found the person she always aspired herself to be.
I’ve been a long time fan of Nicole Williams work in the romance genre. Some of my favorites are Up in Flames and Collared. When I saw she ventured into my favorite reading category I knew I had to read her debut psychological thriller. I love Nicole’s writing style she has a way of engaging the reader.
Nicole gave her readers a cold case story about a vigilante pedophile killer. While the killings seem justifiable judge Silas Payne of the Seattle county won’t allow this individual to take the law in his own hands. I got to say Nicole wrote a compelling story. It’s by far the most original detective work I’ve read in awhile.
Nicole painted Silas Payne as this condescending man when speaking about his daughter. I got to hand it to Nicole her research on each one of these characters job responsibilities was noted. The way each character was characterized was crafted exceptionally well. Nicole knows how to write distinguishing personality traits unique to the behavior she’s striving for.
Nicole covered every tactical approach covering all bases between prison, death, and rehabilitation.
Nicole tackled a brilliant concept of a criminal taking out criminals. I enjoyed the way Nicole executed this concept delivering a dialogue driven story with an array of supporting characters. The side story’s between Grace and Andee helped establish the type of character Grace was a mother striving for success where the system failed once again with her daughter.
“Sometimes the line between right and wrong isn’t as clear and definitive as we like to believe”. This line from the book just illustrates what the reader is dealing with in Nicole’s chilling thriller where the answer between what is fair justice is blurred.
Nicole Williams set out to prove the short comings of law enforcement and the justice system with this award winning psychological thriller that will rock your world and blow your mind. She wrote one convincing story. I’m certain she can turn a saint into a sinner with her masterful words. She played every side of the law with pure talent. She was the greatest advocate from all sides of the law.
It’s a rarity for me to find books where I say, “I want more.” I found myself wishing for more of Grace’s and Noah’s story. I’m so happy to see a new book release scheduled for 2021 called Dawn of Plagues. Nicole is working towards a new level of fame in the psychological thriller category.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have been a fan of Nicole's for a very long time and I am beyond grateful that I am a part of her team and get to read her work early. She never ceases to amaze me with what she writes and the characters she brings us.
These Violent Roots was nothing like I had anticipated. I knew from the start, the answer to some of the suspense, but that's not the point of this story. It was the journey on getting there and the aftermath that followed. I was not ready for any of that.
"The huntsman was spurred from guilt, manifested with fear, and sustained by duty."
This book did take a bit to get into but as things got more interesting and more intense, the beginning portions started to make more sense and come together a bit more. But what kept me glue was the unexpected turns that Nicole delivered in this story.
" 'I'm the gleaner of the slack. The necessary evil. The monster no one wants to acknowledge, but everyone sleeps better at night knowing is out there.' "
These Violent Roots is not the typical book we get from Nicole. This is definitely outside her "norm" but she's done that before and wow'd readers with that book (Collared). I love that Nicole steps outside of her normal repertoire because it showcases her talent and her abilities to deliver gripping and jaw dropping stories.
"The rules work for those who follow them, but you know more than most that the worst of our society are also least likely to adhere to the law."
Another great read from Nicole Williams. I love that she is back to writing again and I cannot wait to see what she brings us next this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent character driven psychological suspense that was very thought provoking
Format: Kindle"Sometimes the line between right and wrong isn't as clear and definitive as we like to believe."
These Violent Roots by Nicole Williams is so very different from her previously published books. Regardless if you've read her or not, this book is amazing and hit on so many grey areas when it comes to the way we can see and perceive the law and 'right' and 'wrong'. I think this book is going to really affect people on a whole new level. It's a psychological thriller, but it really makes you think. Makes you think beyond what you're given. When I read the blurb, it totally sounded like something that I would read. So I dove in head first.
This is a story of 2 different people who happen to be married but are working almost on two different sides of the law. One to put the pedophiles away for good and one to rehabilitate them and put them out in public. How do you think that would effect ones relationship? Grace and Noah Wolff work long hours dedicating their lives to their jobs. Long hours equals not a healthy relationship. Throw a teenager into the mix and this story is heavy on the characters and their relationships just as much as the evil that is lurking between the pages.
"I am not the thoughts in my head, or the words from my mouth, or the yearnings in my heart. I am the sum total of my actions. It's a simple equation we don't need to muddy up with figures that don't really matter."
I found myself so deeply involved in the book questioning many aspects on how I felt about each and every character. Their nuances is what drew me in. Then we have someone that was being touted as The Huntsman. While I do enjoy my twists and turns of a thriller, sometimes figuring something out rather early on helps me relax and really pay attention to the character development, their interactions and their relationships to all the supporting characters.
If you're willing to dive in to a well written psychological thriller that is 100% character driven, give These Violent Roots a chance. You won't be disappointed. The content is a bit dark and disturbing, but the plot and pacing along with the characters makes this a book to put on your watch list.
"All the good intentions in the world won't stop or deter the monsters among us. Security is society's lullaby, meant to lure us to sleep when darkness encroaches. Safety is a lie packaged under the pretense of a guarantee. Good people follow the rules. The evil ones make their own."

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThese Violent Roots is a suspenseful thriller that was unexpected and a totally pleasant surprise. So different from Nicole Williams work that I have read in the past. It has been a long time since I have read her work, and even though it is different, it was still a fantastic read.
The main characters provide a plethora of difficult situations, sensitive subjects, and some amazing content that kept me enthralled, intrigued and blown away.
These Violent Roots was a real head messing story that I could not be dragged away from. A very well written psychological saga that will shock and satisfy, all at once. 5 stars.
