4.5 out of 5 stars 2,688 ratings

In this series debut from New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong, a modern-day homicide detective finds herself in Victorian Scotland—in an unfamiliar body—with a killer on the loose.

"A great read." —Charlaine Harris

MAY 20, 2019: Homicide detective Mallory Atkinson is in Edinburgh to be with her dying grandmother. While out on a jog one evening, Mallory hears a woman in distress. She’s drawn to an alley, where she is attacked and loses consciousness.

MAY 20, 1869: Housemaid Catriona Mitchell had been enjoying a half day off, only to be discovered that night strangled and left for dead . . . exactly one hundred and fifty years before Mallory is strangled in the same spot.

When Mallory wakes up in Catriona’s body in 1869, she must put aside her shock and adjust quickly to her new reality: life as a housemaid to an undertaker in Victorian Scotland. She soon discovers that her boss, Dr. Gray, also moonlights as a medical examiner and has just taken on an intriguing case, the strangulation of a young man, similar to the attack on herself. Her only hope is that catching the murderer can lead her back to her modern life . . . before it’s too late.

Kelley Armstrong believes experience is the best teacher, though she’s been told this shouldn’t apply to writing her murder scenes. To craft her books, she has studied aikido, archery and fencing. She sucks at all of them. She has also crawled through very shallow cave systems and climbed half a mountain before chickening out. She is however an expert coffee drinker and a true connoisseur of chocolate-chip cookies.

Kelly Armstrong's Amazing Debut Time Travel Will Leave You Breathless!
Kelly Armstrong did it again. She found a way to knock her readers completely for a loop, sending them on a ride of a lifetime, when they think it's just not possible for her to do it any more. I've read all of Ms. Armstrong's Other World series, Darkest Powers series for YA, - that takes place in the Other World setting - Cainsville, Casey Duncan, and Haven's Rock. I've been looking forward to reading A Rip Through Time, and this book is everything a fan of Ms. Armstrong has come to expect from her, and much more. A Rip Through Time takes the reader from modern day North America completely across the Atlantic Ocean to 19th Century Scotland, something Ms. Armstrong has not done before in any of her books, which in itself was a surprise. When she had the heroine help solve a murder, in that time period, surprise mingled with a thrill that she was willing to do what not many authors are - bend history to create a story that her readers will devour in the span of one sitting. If you're not familiar with Ms. Armstrong's work, check this book out, this book is a great way to be introduced, and if you are familiar with her work, this a great way to make new book friends!

Intriguing book right from the start! A step back in time in this mystery comparing the challenges of solving a murder back in the 1800's vs present day. A great read.

First time reading this author, and I'm impressed. Excellent storyline and characters, time and place description, and MST importantly the attention to details regarding the difficulties trying to fit in when suddenly awakening in a historically archaic setting are impressive indeed! Looking forward to the next in the series.

Plot moves slowly. I had no problem, setting this book down to go and do other things.
It’s not bad, but it had potential for so much more.
And also her less than subtle comments about Americans put me off more than just a little.
If her next book shows up on the listing for $1.99 I might read it but for now it’s a hard pass.

I’m 77, and been reading sci fi books since a youngster. This ranks near the top of all TT novels I’ve read. When I started reading it, I knew right away I liked it. But right around the halfway point, that changed: I love this novel! One particular chapter near that point was so enjoyable that, strangely enough, I decided to read it twice more!

Don’t miss this tale. Now, time to go get the sequel and discover more of the story!

I wonder if authors ever read these kinds of reviews, and if they do, to they realize that the phrase “A really good book!”, is in fact about the best review their work can receive? Anyway, I really enjoyed this one. It was very well paced and I loved the characters, especially Grey, but also Mallory and Isla. Several times I found myself thinking, “That’s not what I would do in that situation,” and sure enough Mallory would change her thoughts, actions, or something and it would line up much more with what I was thinking she would do. I realize we are talking about a time traveling detective, but I still like some semblance of reason and logic. I liked that this is not a victorian romance, but there is a promise of some relationship between her and Grey. Like I said before, a really good book.

I knew I would like this book. I pre-ordered it after I read the blurb on Kelly Armstrong's homepage.
Come on a time traveling, crime solving, thirty year old in the body of a nineteen year old, how is someone supposed to not read this book?
The crime and the story around it was very well written. I got totally sucked up in the book want the story to go on immediately 🙂. I like the main characters to be mature without constantly making silly choices and A Rip through Time absolutely delivered that. I could always understand why certain choices were made and I totally could identify myself with Mallory that's why I couldn't put this book down and finished it already.

While on a visit to Edinburgh to be with her dying grandmother, Canadian homicide detective Mallory Atkinson is attacked. She wakens in the body housemaid Catriona Mitchell, who was strangled 150 years earlier in the same spot.
She does finally trap her attacker, who has also traveled into the past, but though the mystery is satisfying, it is the challenges of adapting to Victorian Scotland which are most interesting. Without ready access to the internet for information, electric lighting for illumination, and various labour-saving conveniences, Mallory has to modify her behaviour constantly. And since she is in the body of a servant girl, she has duties to fulfil. Like washing out chamber pots. And the clothing is restrictive, attitudes towards women condescending at best, class distinctions rigid.
She is on a steep learning curve.
    Highly recommended.
