A Walk Through Fire (Through Hell and Back Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,066 ratings

Years after running away from an abusive foster family, Asher Davis still struggles with the guilt of leaving his foster brothers behind. He’s climbed to unimaginable heights as a ruthless, high-powered attorney, creating a life of power and control and takes whatever and whomever he wants.

Blaming himself for the death of his parents, Dr. Drew Klein retreats into a shell of loneliness, merely going through the motions of life. After a disastrous, short-lived marriage, Drew leaves his lucrative medical practice to set up a clinic for abused young men and women. The decision has more repercussions than Drew could ever imagine when the dark and sensual Ash Davis volunteers to help.

Although Drew isn’t gay, Ash is inexplicably drawn to him. He vows to simply bed him and forget him like he's done with every other man. However, Drew's sweet and caring nature and unexpected passion both stun and frighten Ash, who questions his right to any happiness at all. And when Ash befriends an abused young man who unwittingly draws the clinic into danger, threatening Drew’s safety and that of his beloved grandmother, Ash discovers that there is nothing he won’t sacrifice to protect the love he never thought he’d find.
A Walk Through Fire is an Enemies to Lovers Gay Contemporary Romance with a Happily Ever After. If you love broken alpha males with a heart of gold, you'll love Ash and Drew's story.
This is a re-edited version of the original book published in 2014. Over 12,000 words of new content have been added

I have been waiting to read “A Walk Through Fire” since the moment I heard author Felice Stevens was writing another book. I really liked her first book, “Rescued” and wanted to see what she was going to do next.  After (FINALLY) getting to read it, I am very happy to report that it was well worth the wait. I was captivated from the start – didn’t stop reading until I reached the very last word.  The storyline is strong with multiple arcs that reel you in. The characters are well defined and written in a way that you just want to know everything about them. Their development is such that you care about even the supporting characters, who by the end of this book are like one big family.

Speaking of characters – I absolutely love a broody broken alpha with a mysterious past. If he’s an unapologetic slut on top of it, that makes him even more interesting. If a heart of gold lies beneath the hardened exterior, I’m a goner. So, no surprise, I fell hook line and sinker for Ash. Someone who is portrayed as callous and uncaring on the surface and at the same time puts himself on the line to help underprivileged kids just screams out “I CAN BE SAVED!!!”.

Drew is equally a mess, just in a different way. A nice ‘straight’ guy, with a tragic past of his own, he’s focused on the clinic he’s starting up, and the last thing he expects is his own curiosity to be piqued by all things Ash. He’s intrigued, no matter how much he’s warned off, and the more inappropriate Ash seems, the more Drew tries to pull back, the more he’s drawn in.

The connection between Drew and Ash is apparent, and their attraction is palpable.  Their friendship/relationship runs the gamut from amusing to heart-breaking, but is never boring. And the sex – talk about a walk through fire! HOT HOT HOT!!!  Love these two together. Love how though neither is truly innocent they are each other’s firsts in many ways. Love how they are at times sexy as hell, and at times just so sweet. And wow, there were definite fan-yourself-hot moments.

Beyond the main story of Ash and Drew is the other focus – the foster care storyline. Felice Stevens does not shy away from the issues with children in foster care. In fact she shines a bright light on them, from the kids that come to the clinic, to Asher, who is still very troubled by his past. Though a sub-plot, this is a very relevant arc and reaches far and wide. It affects everyone under its umbrella, family and friends alike.

This is by no means an easy read. There are graphic situations and circumstances that may gut you and/or break your heart. But there is also love and loyalty and redemption and the (guaranteed by the author herself) HEA that will mend you and leave you smiling through the tears.

If you like a sexy love story that draws you in, makes you laugh, breaks you down and then fixes you, grab that box of tissues – “A Walk Through Fire” is the one for you.

Hmmm... not sure how to rate this book. I bought it without reading the blurb/synopsis because it was a 'new rerelease' by an author I had read before.
This book had lots of angst (not a huge fan of angst) and the story is kind of deep. I had several issues with the story (not the writing, that was fabulous). Most of my issues involved secondary characters.

    **SPOILERS AHEAD**

-I didn't like Jordan's harsh feelings towards Ash.
-I didn't understand how Stevie's Foster parents didn't ask or wonder what was happening to him. I mean, if they were such great people, why didn't they wonder why he kept coming home with bruises?
-I was hoping that we would get the Luke & Brandon storyline but maybe that will be in another book?
-The event towards the end of the book made me very sad and while I understand that it leads in to book 2, I can't help but wish it had ended differently.
-I have also never been a fan of cutting and that really disturbed me.

    **END SPOILERS**

While I was interested in Drew & Ash's relationship, I was more interested in the secondary characters than I was in Drew or Ash as people (does that make sense?)
I didn't love this book as much as I loved Rescued but it was decent and I am interested in reading book 2 to find out what happens to Jordan

Asher is an accomplished lawyer professionally and a beautiful disaster personally. While his successes are great, he sees them only as external, something almost separate to himself. He regularly suffers from the demons in his mind, and is heartbreaking to behold. Drew is a physician who has been beaten down in the loss of his parents and now his wife, but with the support of friends and family, he has forged a path of stability and success.

These two men are absolutely volatile together! From the word go there is explosive chemistry readily apparent between the two men, despite Drew never having been attracted to another man before in his life. There is a strong plot that is interwoven with several subplots, but it never gets murky. The pacing got a little choppy in some sections, but again, not enough to warrant any substantial deduction in rating. Both of these characters grow exponentially from start to finish, and this book is full of great snark and witticisms, something I particularly enjoy. There are a multitude of peripheral characters that add to the ambiance as a whole and create a well-rounded world. If there were one thing I would want done differently, it would be Jordan. His over-the-top irrational hatred of Asher seems unwarranted, and if there is any specific reasoning behind it, it was never explained outside of the cursory backstory given. This is a solid 4.5 star book, and if you are wondering whether or not to give it a try, I highly suggest you do!

I love M/M romance, so when I read Felice Stevens's first book, Rescued, I was pleased to discover a great new author of this genre. Well, Felice has upped her game with this second novel. In her character Ash, she gives us a wonderful sexy but flawed hero with a harrowing backstory, which had me in tears a few times. When Ash meets Drew, a lonely doctor with a mission close to Ash's heart, their attraction is magnetic. But both have problems which threaten to stop their relationship before it ever gets started. This book tackles heartrending issues head on, yet with sensitivity. With a cast of well-drawn supporting characters and of course, some superb sexy love scenes, this book ticks all my boxes! I understand there will be a book 2 - can't wait!

I really enjoyed this series. While the storyline is not a new one it was written in a way that seemed it was. I fell in love with the main characters and the supporting characters. I would recommend this to anyone who loves gay romance...or romance in general. This would be a good starting book into the genre.
