Weep, Woman, Weep: A Gothic Fairytale about Ancestral Hauntings Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 179 ratings

A compelling gothic fairytale by bruja and award-winning writer Maria DeBlassie.

The women of Sueño, New Mexico don’t know how to live a life without sorrows. That’s La Llorona’s doing. She roams the waterways looking for the next generation of girls to baptize, filling them with more tears than any woman should have to hold. And there’s not much they can do about the Weeping Woman except to avoid walking along the riverbank at night and to try to keep their sadness in check. That’s what attracts her to them: the pain and heartache that gets passed down from one generation of women to the next.

Mercy knows this, probably better than anyone. She lost her best friend to La Llorona and almost found a watery grave herself. But she survived. Only she didn’t come back quite right and she knows La Llorona won’t be satisfied until she drags the one soul that got away back to the bottom of the river.

In a battle for her life, Mercy fights to break the chains of generational trauma and reclaim her soul free from ancestral hauntings by turning to the only things that she knows can save her: plant medicine, pulp books, and the promise of a love so strong not even La Llorona can stop it from happening. What unfolds is a stunning tale of one woman’s journey into magic, healing, and rebirth.

Weep, Woman, Weep by Maria DeBlassie is a gothic fairytale novella with a nice twist to the Mexican folklore, LA Llorona. When La Llorona gets a hold of a woman she basically causes more sorrow and sadness that follows women through generations. Mercy is the one who got away but she lives her life fighting to heal through the generational trauma. This story was written so well. It was beautiful but also heartbreaking. My favorite part about it is that it almost felt like I was reading Mercy's diary. It was her daily experiences with trying to live while also staying away from moments that opens the door for La Llorona. Check content warnings

I loved this book SO much! It's sad, so sad in the beginning. If you have a heart you're going to weep too. But then it gets better. And then it gets GOOD. You are rooting for Mercy to save herself, to not let La Llorona win and turn her into a sad, judgy, miserable, church lady like so many others in the town who just can't let go of their generational pain and have to inflict it on everyone else in a never-ending cycle. Mercy is determined to break that cycle, and she doesn't care if she has to become an outcast to do it.

Maria DeBlassie's wry prose is just a treasure. I highlighted A LOT of lines that were brilliant, and I want to go back and savor them again. She writes about magic how I imagine it actually exists. A feeling. An intuition. Something you see out the corner of your eye. Setting your intentions and watching things manifest in unexpected ways. And of course, growing things just plain IS good magic, and I loved all the farming in this tale.

Oh, and Santos, the sweet, totally hot, techie/herbalist soap maker/farmer who moves in next door? ::swoon::

I would give this book ten stars if I could!

This was an amazing story. Short, but so well written that you do even notice. I loved seeing Mercy come to her own and build her life even with all of the sorrows. I love how its on the edge of is this true or just stories Mercy uses to keep her life together. This is a bittersweet story, but does leave you with hope.

I couldn't put this book down. The cultural differences that society can't understand, a d yet many cultures if not most can understand. The lessons - at least in my opinion- are so needed for all in sensitive situations everywhere. I cannot wait to read more from you. I'm not from your culture but Kerry's life was so reflective of mine. I sometimes feel like at 73 I can I am seeing my own gradual awakening. Many thanks dear!
