What Lies Inside Kindle Edition
Malcolm Todd seems like an average older man – he lives a quiet life in an ordinary bungalow on a suburban street.
But Malcolm is hungry – he’s looking for love.
There was that young woman at work with the lovely hair. That didn't work out.
And the one who worked at a delicatessen. That ended quite badly.
But now someone very special has come to stay, right here in his own home. Josie is young, beautiful, spirited. And it’s clear to Malcolm that he and she have a very strong connection. A connection that could lead to a truly delicious future.
Josie might not immediately understand how happy they could be together. But Malcolm is sure he can find ways to persuade her…
What Lies Inside – the chilling psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Frieda McFadden, John Marrs, Kiersten Modglin.
Previously published as Mr. Todd’s Reckoning.

About the author

Hello,
Well, here I am with a new novel, The Surrogate from Inkubator Books, out 13 April and available to pre-order from 4 April.
Here's what my friend and fellow novelist Barbara Nadel has to say:
'Chilling ... Emotional ... Terrifying' Barbara Nadel
That sums it up really well.
This is the sixth and final psych of mine published by my friends at Inkubator Books following The Girl Downstairs and The Perfect Husband and The Soulmate and The New Son and What Lies Inside. Please do check them out too.
I signed with a fab book to screen agent, Hannah Weatherill at Watson Little, a month or so ago, and am currently writing three screen ready psychs -The Real Father (just finished), The Mother-In-Law (now writing to end July) and The Man Upstairs (to end of November). I expect these to come out through 2026.
Meantime, I do hope you enjoy The Surrogate.
Thank you.
Iain

- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2024The imagery in this book is fantastic. I could feel the heat and smell the odors. It was actually a bit nauseating at times. But I had to find out how it ended.
It doesn’t take long to realize that Malcolm and Adrian have some deep psychological issues. I felt sorry for Adrian because he really needed help and Malcolm was not a good father to him. I can’t go into details without giving something away.
As soon as the story begins I knew Malcolm had done something bad but it was shocking just the same to find out what it was. Pay attention to what is in the garage. That just adds to the creepiness. See if you can figure out how some of the items are going to be used. Very suspenseful.
It might make you look at your neighbors a little closer.
The ending is vengeful and satisfying.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2024I almost stopped reading after the first few pages. I thought the storyline was depressing. Page by page I got into it. I became interested in the diary. The twisted thinking was fascinating.
I will read more by Ian Maitland.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2024This book wasn't really anything like the synopsis. What was mentioned in the back didn't even come forward until well over 55% of the book. And even then, it still wasn't like what was described. Why the incidents with the coworkers was even mentioned in the back is beyond me, because we had several other incidents mentioned later on in the book that absolutely needed more explaining. And, what in the heck was that ending? Nothing explained or expanded on....Just abruptly ended. It felt like the author had a deadline to meet, therefore just put together some rushed and half baked idea of an ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2024I’ve read all of Iain Maitland’s newest releases and have enjoyed them all. This novel I finished in 2 sittings. Story is wickedly macabre with main character’s dark humor sprinkled in. My type of story!

I don't know how I feel about this one. It definitely gets you inside the mind of someone who positively believes what he's doing, his odd behaviors, his weird quips, his beliefs are normal and acceptable, when in reality he is deranged to the point of being completely detached from reality.
Malcolm lives in a small bungalow with his unemployed adult son whose OCD and laziness is getting on Malcolm's last nerve. He knows his son can be trouble and he's worried because the usually reclusive son has started going out, not telling him where he is going. His son has been in trouble before. He's odd and he does odd things....odd things that often end up with the police inolved. Now Malcolm has to worry, is his son back to his old ways?
Malcolm's wife is gone. It wasn't his fault, but she's gone. Malcolm, a gentle older man who would just like to find someone who would love him. He had a failed relationship with a young lady at his work which ended his career. It wasn't his fault, but his career ended just the same. His son has now brought home a beautiful woman named Josie. She is too much woman for his deadbeat son and Malcolm knows she might be the perfect woman for him instead. It's not his fault, it's just how it is.
Told from Malcolm's point-of-view, this novel gets into the head of a sociopath (?) who believes his actions are completely justified. It's horrifying to know these people walk among us.
The ending left me wanting more (no spoiler), but I can see why it ended the way it did.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2024I do not like writing mixed reviews, but this was a very weird book. All written in the narrators post of view as if he is writing a diary. I kept reading because it had many 5 star reviews so I was hoping it would get better. It never did.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2024Too much uninteresting detail, half the time I didn't know who he was talking about. Would not recommend this book to anyone..

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and (very) disturbing!
A quiet and diligent tax inspector has a dark secret. To his colleagues he is a bit of a joke and they either ignore or bully him. His wife is bored with their marriage and is having an affair. His son suffers from learning difficulties and appears to have an unhealthy interest in young children. However, this middle class, pillar of the community is not as innocent as he would have the outside world believe. Inside his head are some very dark and disturbing thoughts and fantasies. Surely that's all they are, the fantasies of a frustrated middle aged man. He would never act on them, would he? I found this psychological thriller a compulsive read although certain aspects of the story will haunt me for a long time.
