Actual rating is a 4.5 but rounding up to a 5.

I really enjoyed the stories that explored Icelandic mythology. There were a few stories that I didn’t enjoy quite as much, but they were all well written.

The author made note of some other anthologies they’ve been a part of and I look forward to look into those as well.

Really enjoyed the diverse stories in this collection. Some more tame than others, but all took turns I was not prepared for. Some of these were just lightly creepy, and some were outright gory... regardless of how you lean with your horror reading desires, this was an excellent collection of short stories, written well and fleshed out nicely.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was not familiar with Icelandic myths or folklore, and in this book, I found many new mythological beings and interesting stories. While sometimes the stories read like a Grimm Brothers' tale, there are other ones with a more modern touch, all featuring enough horror and blood to satisfy a fan of horror anthologies.

Standout stories: 'All You Can Drink Buffet,' 'The Yule Lads Are Coming,' and 'What Protects Our Heritage.'

Thank you to NetGalley and Brigids Gate Press for the ARC. My opinions are my own.

Do you like folk tales with a little horror on the side? Do you like Nordic themes and settings? Do you like unexplainable events and creatures? Then this might be for you.

I have sat on my thoughts for a while about this book, and I have come to the conclusion that it is an okay book with a few gold nuggets hidden between the cracks. The stories are usually fine, if a little bland sometimes. Sometimes we get satisfying endings, other times I was left disappointed. This is what you should expect of a collection.

I think the mosquito story and the first story with the little "devil child" were the best ones. They made me feel just a little more than the others.

Okay book, okay stories. Might not have been meant for me, but maybe it is for you. 3 stars.

What Protects Our Heritage and Other Aberrations by Villimey Mist is a twisted collection of Icelandic horror stories. From the opening story, The Girl with the Hooves which was a classic old school dark fairy tale, I was hooked. Even though I’ve loved horror all my life it wasn’t until recently that I began to branch out of what I’d consider mainstream horror and been wowed by a diversity I never knew existed. Over the last few years I’ve enjoyed Hispanic, Japanese, Native America, and now Icelandic horror. If you’re like me and have only been reading mainstream you really don’t know what you’ve been missing. There are so many incredible horror writers out there. I enjoyed the heck out these stories and can’t wait to check out more of Villimey’s work. I’d like to thank Brigids Gate Press, LLC and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an eARC of What Protects Our Heritage and Other Aberrations.

The fantastic cover is what really drew me to this book. When I saw many of the stories are based on Icelandic legends, I was all the way in. The stories not based on myth are excellent as well, with a couple posing questions I had never really thought about. This was my first experience with Villimey Mist, and I am highly impressed. I definitely plan on checking out her other books.

I loved this book and I'm now a massive fan of villimey mist. There wasn't a bad story in the whole book. I found all of the Icelandic creatures and lore to be fascinating. Very highly recommended and I'm looking forward to her next work.
