Wicked as Sin (One-Mile & Brea, Part One) (Wicked Lovers: Soldiers For Hire Book 1) Kindle Edition
He’s her protector, her temptation, her undoing…
Pierce “One-Mile” Walker is a former Marine sniper turned ruthless security operative, a man with a dangerous edge and a darker reputation. Built to take lives, not save them, he has no business wanting sweet, virginal preacher’s daughter Brea Bell. But when she begs him to rescue his enemy, he sees his chance to claim the one thing he craves but could never have—her.
Brea has been a good girl her entire life. But nothing about Pierce is good—not his dark past, not his lethal skills, and certainly not the raw hunger in his stare. He’s forbidden, dangerous, and completely irresistible.
When her pleas for help force her into Pierce’s arms at the cost of her innocence, they ignite a passion she can’t deny. And as their fiery fling explodes into something deeper, deadly enemies surface, and dangerous secrets threaten to tear them apart.
Will Pierce sacrifice everything to protect her, or will the war inside him destroy them both?

About the author

Shayla Black is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than ninety contemporary, erotic, paranormal, and historical romances. Her books have sold millions of copies and been published in a dozen languages.
As an only child, Shayla occupied herself by daydreaming, much to the chagrin of her teachers. In college, she found her love for reading and started pursuing a publishing career. Though she graduated with a degree in Marketing/Advertising and embarked on a stint in corporate America, her heart was with her stories and characters, so she left her pantyhose and power suits behind.
Shayla currently lives in North Texas with her wonderfully supportive husband, her daughter, and two spoiled tabbies. In her “free” time, she enjoys reality TV, gaming, and listening to an eclectic blend of music.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2020FINAL DECISION: Loved this story. One-Mile ended up being much more of a marshmallow than I expected about Brea. The story felt really classic and was eminently enjoyable because of that. My only negative is that the book is only part 1 and I've been burned by these split stories before. But I can't wait to read the conclusion.
THE STORY: Brea Bell is warned to stay away from Pierce Walker (aka One-Mile). But the attraction between the virginal preacher's daughter and the dangerous sniper is hot and immediate. When Brea ends up coming to One-Mile for help, things explode with far reaching consequences.
OPINION: This was a story that I was highly anticipated. I really loved this couple together. The story was hot and yet there was a definite sweetness between this couple that I didn't expect. I got immediately engrossed in this book and read it quickly in one sitting.
Brea and Pierce are adorable. He's an alpha who can't imagine his feelings for the Brea and yet can't stay away from her. Brea is a woman of values but she doesn't judge or shame other people. I really liked that about her. I also liked that she recognizes her own faults. The heat and the passion between these two was obvious and I thought their connection worked really well.
The only negative for me is the cliffhanger. I wasn't angry or annoyed because it is clear from the cover of the book that this is a part 1 of the story. I think my trepidation is because I have over the recent years read some really fantastic beginnings of stories that I was deeply disappointed in the ending. None of those books were by Shayla Black, but I'm still wary. I hope that I will be pleasantly surprised in the end.
WORTH MENTIONING: This book is NOT the complete story of this couple. It is part one. There is a part two that will be the conclusion.
CONNECTED BOOKS: WICKED AS SIN is the first book in the Wicked & Devoted series. The Wicked & Devoted series is a spin-off of the Wicked Lovers series and the Devoted Lovers series. It is not necessary to have read any book in the prior series to read this one. I have not read the Wicked Lovers series at all and didn't have any problem understanding the various characters and conflicts.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.
NOTE: I received an eARC of this book via the author's Facebook group. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own. I also purchased a copy of this book once it became available to the public.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2024Opening book in paramilitary romance. The first part of a duet belonging to a series. It took a while to get pulled into the story. The civilian opening, as we get to know Brea, is slow and almost plodding. Also a wee bit heavy handed on the innocent-vs-sinful side of things. But once we get into the connection between Brea and One-Mile it takes off and we don't look back.
I hadn't checked before I started the book, but this is a duet, so we don't get our resolution at the end of this book. Not a cliffhanger per se but a lot left up in the air... and no HEA yet. Only slightly frustrating, as I wanted more story anyway.
I'm enjoying the story enough to grab more in this series from the author.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2024You can’t stop with book one! This is the first book I've read by this author. I thought I'd just dip in and see if I liked her style. But the characters grabbed me immediately. Then, the underlying danger sealed the deal. I hadn't even finished before searching for the finale and snapping it up.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2020THE GUIDE TO ROMANCE NOVELS PURCHASE REVIEW
Not my first read by the author and she actually was one of my firsts many years ago. I have always loved her books and writing style. I am always honest and even if that means a favorite author of mine wrote something I did not enjoy reading. I think I was more frustrated/annoyed during this book than anything.
*My blog contains the full review because of the words I have used in it, so I will abbreviate or try to summarize what I had said.
The heroine was not my style AT ALL, she was very mousy, indecisive and a huge push over. The hero was actually 50/50 okay until I realized that he is chasing after another man's woman even if that is not true, to the hero in the whole book that is what he believes. Now let's talk about Cutter whom I hate with passion, it was all sweet and nice at the beginning protecting the heroine and all but after a while he just became a bully, someone who kind of pushed the heroine around and that's where her being a push over comes. I just feel like we get a lot more of the heroine and Cutter (which btw is supposed to be the best friend/brother) than her and the hero. It just did now flow for me with the characters.
This contains mystery, suspense, angst, fake relationship and it is a cliff hanger. I sadly will not be reading the conclusion because I got to read chapter 1 at the end of this book and I just don't think I want to end up hate-reading the rest. But again, my opinion so someone else might enjoy this style a lot more. Not for me, sadly to say because I truly love Shayla's books!

2.0 out of 5 stars Weak woman
I usually love Ms Black's work, but in this case it's made me mad. If you like reading about a poor, silly girly, who is unable to communicate, is weak and delicate, worries about other's opinions and is happy to deceive the person who is is love/ lust with her, then this book is for you. Since I prefer to read about people who are strong, face life and is truthful, I felt like shaking her a little. And what does that man see in her? I did not like reading this. It's the first time I give Shayla Black less than 4 or 5 stars.

Wow shayla black has done it again! It had everything I look for in a good book! Even a love story between a preachers daughter & govt merc. ONE MILE & BREA are scorching 🔥🔥🔥. Not just in physical way...a deep connection. He is so scarred . Doesn’t believe he deserves love ..I was scared out of my mind at moments & my heart broke so many times ..I’m diving into book 2 “wicked ever after”

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!
I'm not a fan of the third person style, but this was an enjoyable read.
Brea's best friend is an irritating, judgemental, overprotective PITA, and one wishes he'd just butt out, but that's his role.
I hope in the next book, Pierce embraces his name and realises that just because it was his father's too, it doesn't mean he can't make the name his own, because the whole 'One-Mile' thing, is plain silly, especially when people assume it's pure arrogance that he opts for that moniker.
Looking forward to book 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughts on "Wicked as Sin"
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel - the characters were well thought through and the plot developed nicely from beginning to end! Sometimes Bree's character seems a little unrealistic but that is probably because if you haven't had dealings with an altruistic person ( I haven't) it becomes hard to imagine!
I will say that I'm quite sad that I won't be able to read the conclusion to their story as it's not covered by my kindle subscription and being a pensioner I can only just afford that!
But even saying that I would recommend this book!
