Pulsing with tension, it’s a non-stop adrenaline rush from start to finish. High stakes action and relentless twists.’ — from multi-million copy bestselling author JOHN MARRS

Cassie will do anything to save her brother. But how far can she go before it kills her?

Cassie’s world is falling apart. Since their parents died, Cassie and Sam have had only each other. But now Sam is in deep trouble — He has one week to come up with nineteen thousand pounds or he won’t survive.

Cassie’s options are running out. The only way to make that kind of money fast? DareMe — a game where users complete dares for cash. It sounds insane, but it's her only shot.

The dares start easy but, soon, they escalate. The stakes grow higher. And the danger? More real than she ever could have imagined.

As the clock ticks down, Cassie discovers she’s not just playing for money — she’s playing for her life.

How much can she endure before the game breaks her — and the people she loves?

A heart-pounding, breathless thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, from the bestselling author of The Husband. Perfect for fans of John Marrs, Freida McFadden, and the film Nerve.

This was a book I stumbled on and am so glad I did. I love it. Hope there is a second on soon!

    Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It took me a little bit to get into this one, but once it clicked, I could not put it down.

As the oldest sister myself, I found Cassie so relatable. The way she felt responsible for her brother, even for his mistakes, really hit home. The slower start gives you the background you need to understand her choices, and from there it just takes off.

The whole idea of DareMe, a social app where people do increasingly risky dares for money, felt way too believable. I love speculative fiction that feels a little too close to real life, and this definitely delivered. The tension builds fast, and the multiple POVs added a lot to the story.

And finding out Darren O’Sullivan is friends with John Marrs? Makes total sense. If you love Marrs’ books, this will be right up your alley.

The ending didn’t totally match the flow of the rest of the book, which threw me off a little… but that final page? I NEED a book two!

Highly recommend if you’re into dark, fast-paced thrillers with a tech twist and morally messy characters.

Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

Win or Die by Darren O'Sullivan is a taut and gripping crime thriller that will have readers on the edge of their seats!

Cassie and her younger brother Sam have been by themselves since their mother died when Cassie was 19 and Sam was 10. Cassie has always tried her best to provide for Sam, often missing out on her own life so Sam was taken care of. Now ten years later Sam has found himself in trouble with some very bad people. When Cassie finds Sam bound and beaten, Sam finally tells her that he owes these men 19,000 pounds. With Sam in the hospital recovering from operations from the attack, Cassie knows it is up to her to pay her brother's debt. Cassie signs up on a social media game app called DareMe where players can earn money by accepting and completing dares and filming themselves doing them. After completing a couple of easy ones (kiss a stranger, swim across a river, run down the street in your underwear etc) but only making a couple hundred pounds, Cassie needs to start doing the higher paying dares. Unfortunately some of these dares are illegal or worse. With the clock ticking down on when she needs to pay the people Sam owes, another dare is set and this time Cassie might not survive.

This was such a fast-paced and enjoyable book! The plot is unique and interesting and I really enjoyed diving into the dark side of social media and what people will do for fame or money. The whole mob effect towards the end was very well written, I could feel myself growing more paranoid and tense as time progressed. The twists are definitely well placed and absolutely believable especially in the social media driven world we are in today. One of O'Sullivan's strongest attributes in this book is his masterful character development. Seeing Cassie's vulnerability and love for her brother is just heart-wrenching. And don't even get me started on that ending.. absolutely wild!

Thank you to NetGalley, Darren O'Sullivan, and Joffe Books for this ARC! Publication date is April 16th 2025.

Can someone tell me why this book hasn’t gone viral yet?!?!? Seriously this is probably the best thriller I’ve read this year. Yes, there were a couple of moments where I thought did it really just go there, but it really is that good. I did not want to put it down. From start to finish I was invested in the plot and in Cassie. There were moments that made me gasp out loud. How often can you say that? I have a pretty decent track record of not being shocked, because I usually guess everything and everyone. But there were things I did not see coming.

It’s a unique premise in a genre that seems a lot of the time to be recycling plotlines. Tinkering with them to try for something different. This is fresh and stands out in the genre of domestic plots. Ultimately it is about a family. A sister trying to protect her brother, but it focused on more than that.

It’s pulse pounding and adrenaline filled. While I never thought about it during the read, it does have a little bit of a message about social media and has great opportunities for book club discussions. How far would you go to protect a loved one and does social media bring out the best or the worst in us.

There were a few moments later in the book that reminded me a little of The Purge and a play on a short lived US TV series that focused on crowd sourcing crimes.

I really can’t recommend this book enough. I flipping loved it and wish I could read it for the first time again. And based on that ending, maybe I can? I’d be all in to see where it would head if there was a sequel.

Cassie and Sam only have each other after their parents die. They are just scraping by on Cassie's salary, but when she finds out Sam has gotten involved with some shady characters and owes them a boat ton of money. A lot more than she can raise even if she cashes out her savings.

Then she finds out about an online social media app called Dare Me, where players can accept dares for cash. Did I mention there are also time limits? Participants are anonymous, because they wear disguises and their details are supposedly protected by the app. But after a few successful dares, Cassie is taking on riskier and riskier dares, and becoming infamous on the app. And with fame, comes...stalkers.

What would you do for money, if it meant saving your kid brother?

This was a taut, suspenseful, race-against-the-clock book. If you like shows like Black Mirror or Squid Games, this book is a must-read!

When I started reading this book, I was open minded about the story. I thought the concept of daring members of the public to act in an irresponsible way for money could be over-the-top. But upon reflection, there have been TV shows in the past like ‘Married at first sight,’ Where strangers marry after being matched. The show produced very few happy marriages; the success rate was around 15%. And I can talk from experience about marrying a stranger, my wife and I met at work one afternoon and were engaged by going home time, marrying four months later. In spite of dire predictions from well-meaning people. We were successful because we done it for love, and not for TV show glitter and a cash incentive. There was a TV show called ‘I Wanna Marry Harry.’ A group of American ladies vying for the attention of an obviously fake Prince Harry, and making fools of themselves. Another TV show was ‘Naked Attraction.’ Where contestants bare-all in the pursuit of a date. So perhaps the stories plot is not so far fetched after all. In the story a young man is a courier for a gang boss and while smuggling a package through customs, has to dispose of it quickly as it became obvious, he was caught in a trap, and if caught with the package would blow the illegal operation sky-high. Is the gang boss grateful for the young man’s resourcefulness, saving the operation? Even though admitting that the courier done the right thing, he has the young man beaten up and demands a seriously amount of cash as recompense for the lost package. As a child in the 1930s, I saw a Popeye cartoon called “Leave Well Enough Alone.” Where a parrot advises Popeye not to meddle in things and Popeye quickly learns the wisdom of that advice. All my life that cartoon has stuck in my mind, I always leave well enough alone. The gang boss’s spiteful action has unforeseen reactions leading to mayhem, murder and escalates as things become out of control. I’m not saying any more about the story, except that I’m enjoying it. The cartoon I refer to, is available on line.

OK... I'm still stat here thinking... wow... where do I even start with Win Or Die?

The story follows Cassie and her brother Sam and what happens when £19,000 is owed to some very dodgy people by Sam.

So how can Cassie collect £19k inside a week to save her brother? Well, by joining in the new social media craze DareMe. Things get dark and twisty very fast...

This book has some serious 'Nerve' vibes (2016 movie) but is incredibly realistic in its approach. I also love that film so it was a given I'd love this book too.

Cassie and Sam are great characters and I loved how Darren portrayed Cassie. I immediately empathised with her!

The whole concept of this book is exploring the depravity of social media and of course, just how low will someone go for cash...

I started reading this and didn't quite know what to expect as it initially starts off as a calm before the storm kind of thriller but when the adrenaline kicks in, boy does it kick in and I became hooked until I finished!

And... I DIDN'T GUESS THE BAD GUYS! This (to me) is the sign of an outstanding crime thriller as normally I can work out a bag guy really on in the book!

This is the first time I've read Darren but based on this book alone, I will definitely read Darren's work again as this was incredible!
