The Truth about the Lady: A Clean Regency Romance (Whispers of the Ton Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 113 ratings

She wrote the riddles—he took the glory. But who will win the final challenge?

Lady Hyacinth has always been ignored. Considered a wallflower given that she is much too quiet and lacks her sister’s beauty, she finds solitude in her writing. Coming up with riddles and word mysteries, she sends them to The London Chronicle and is delighted when the ton begins to speak of them! One gentleman, however, declares himself to be the riddle-writer, stealing her glory from her and Hyacinth, despite her shy nature, is determined to come up with her own revenge.

Samuel, the Marquess of Trentwood, has always prided himself on his intellect. Ignoring those who call him arrogant, he becomes a little irritated when he cannot answer the riddles written in The London Chronicle. When a friend asks him for an answer to one of the riddles, Samuel pretends that he himself is the riddle writer rather than reveal his lack of understanding, only for that news to spread through the ton at once! When strange things begin to happen to him and the riddles seem to become a little more personal, Samuel determines to find out who the real writer.

Can he find out the truth without revealing his lies? And what will happen when his heart begins to long for something entirely different?

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Rose has read her way through countless romances over the years, “borrowing” them from her older sisters, and hiding them from her mother (Mom didn't like the sexy book covers!)

She has a special love for Regency romances and when she began writing, the Regency period was a natural place to start. The ton, the wealthy families, the Season, the dilemmas, and yes, the marriages, have always fascinated her. She loves a happy ever after! Now she is happy to bring this passion to her stories and share it with her readers.

On a personal note, Rose lives in North Carolina, is married, and has a terrier that barks too much. She enjoys taking him for walks to tire him out!

    A fun series!
This story was well written with both the hero and heroine struggling with their own weaknesses. They both over looked their strengths. But each discovered them and were stronger for that.
I also liked how the author portrayed how a person can be viewed one way but the true character and nature may be totally different.
    A sweet read!

I have so enjoyed this series and hate to see it end but also can't wait to see what else this author writes next. I loved Hyacinth and.Lord Thorne's story. These two have a really strange beginning that causes them to spend time together. He doesn't think he wants marriage or love until it finds him. She doesn't enjoy society and is able to relax when he's there to help. A captivating read that I totally enjoyed.

Rose Pearson's sixth book in the Whispers of the Ton series introduces us to a captivating tale centered on Lady Hyacinth. In stark contrast to her outgoing and beautiful sister, Rose, Lady Hyacinth is a reserved and shy wallflower who prefers to stay in the background. Her solace lies in exchanging riddles and word mysteries with a trusted friend. Unexpectedly, her friend submits one of these riddles to the London Chronicles, where they become the talk of the ton.

The twist comes when Samuel, the Marquess of Trentwood—a handsome but egotistical man who takes pride in his intelligence—claims credit for being the anonymous riddle writer. His arrogance prevented him from admitting his inability to solve the riddle, leading him to embellish the truth. The exposure of his deceit sets off a cascade of events and growing frustrations.

Determined to seek retribution for Samuel's deception, Lady Hyacinth cleverly uses her riddles to convey messages to him. As the riddles take on a more personal tone, Samuel becomes determined to unmask the true author. Thus begins an intriguing battle of wits.

This engaging story explores themes of pride and arrogance through Samuel's journey towards self-awareness. His mistakes force him to reassess his decisions, while Hyacinth learns to assert herself, stepping out from her sister's shadow. Both characters undergo significant personal growth, which is richly detailed by Pearson writing. The plot is compelling, and the character development is skillfully executed, I was captivated from start to finish.

Rose Pearson masterfully intertwines wit, romance, and personal growth in 'Whispers of the Ton.' The journey of Lady Hyacinth and Samuel is a charming exploration of love overcoming pride, making it a delightful addition to the series.

Being considered a wallflower, Lady Hyacinth has been given an ultimatum by her mother that is she doesn’t find a gentleman to marry this season that she will be forced to marry her second cousin who is definitely unsuitable. She is a quiet person who would rather write than go to gatherings and has been writing with her friend sending riddles and word mysteries to her friend. As her friend Eve has just returned to town, she decided to send riddles to The London Chronicle. As the riddles become the talk of the town, Samuel, the Marquess of Trentwood, finds himself asks if he knows the answer to the riddles. As he is a very prideful man, he ends up saying he is the one who published them as he didn’t know the answer and didn’t want to admit it. Now he needs to tell the truth but doesn’t know how to go about it. Especially as he has developed feelings for Lady Hyacinth.

Lady Hyacinth is being forced to try to be what she is not. To help with the stress she starts to put riddles in the paper. The thrill of watching everyone talk about it is great until Lord Trentwood claims they are his. Can she confront him with the shyness she has? I love how Rose Pearson comes up with the most fun situations. Always a joy to read.

Samuel, Marquess of Thorne is a very prideful man who doesn’t like to be thought of as wanting in anything. Lady Hyacinth is a shy character who doesn’t enjoy pushing herself forward amongst the Ton. When Hyacinth’s mother puts some extreme expectations upon her, her friend sends one of Hyacinth’s riddles to the London Chronicle to cheer her up. This event certainly puts the cat amongst the pigeons. As they traverse the problems which arise, Samuel and Hyacinth grow closer together. I loved the various reveals. This story held my interest all the way through, and I found it hard to put down. I highly recommend this book and indeed the entire series to Regency lovers everywhere.
