The Wall Street Point of View (Annotated) Paperback – June 26, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
The Wall Street Point of View (1900) is tycoon Henry Clews’s unique and controversial account of Nineteenth Century Wall Street's political ties. Clews was among the connected few who became fabulously wealthy and made decisions that shaped the United States.
Clews’s wide-ranging narrative gives context to key global events:
- How to Grow Great Wealth
- Civil War
- Spanish American War
- Currency wars
- Immigration
- Trade wars and Tariffs
- Booms and Busts
- Capitalism versus Communism
Written at the dawn of the Twentieth Century, Clews’s observations are as relevant today as they were when he wrote them.
“There is hardly any other publication with which this volume can be compared...There is not a dull line in the book; even the figures are eloquent.”
New York Times, November 10, 1900.
“The chapter on 'False Men and False Methods on the Street' is well worth the attention of all 'lambs' the country over.”
Evening Telegram, N. Y.
“Mr. Henry Clews has just published the most interesting, comprehensive, suggestive and valuable book on Wall Street we have ever seen.”
Wall Street Daily Investigator
“Colloquial, wise, witty, and full of anecdote. Few men will care to pass by the chapter on ‘Art of Making and Saving Money.’”
Louisville Courier Journal
“Full of instruction for those who are disposed to try their fortunes in the great center of speculation.”
New Haven Palladium
“In the matter of the practical working of a Protective Tariff in relation to prices of commodities, The Wall Street Point of View is also the common-sense point of view.”
American Economist
“Mr. Clews writes very interestingly of the Cleveland Administration...and may be taken as anticipating the verdict which history will pronounce.”
New Orleans Picayune
“A masterpiece of its kind, an attractive and taking discussion of what, in the hands of another, might have been made a very dry and uninteresting theme”
Worcester Spy
“Mr. Clews is the incarnation of the Wall Street spirit, and his forcible views are exceptionally quotable both to the friends and to the enemies of the ideas he champions.”
The Outlook, N.Y.
Henry Clews (1834-1923) was born in Staffordshire, England. As a young ambitious man, he moved to Manhattan, became a U.S. citizen, a leading Wall Street financier, and an influential international political operative. The value investor was the original “Sage of Wall Street.” More than a century later, his witticism was repeated and credited to Warren Buffett, the “Sage of Omaha.”
Clews was a prolific writer and historian. He died in his New York home at the age of 88, after accumulating one of the largest fortunes in the United States.
