Editorial Reviews
Review
"Beguilingly ungilded and notably enthralling, The Thirteenth Tower is a genuine gem of a read and a real credit to author Sara C. Snider. Undeniably deserving of a place on your bookshelf, it is recommended without reservation!" — Book Viral
"Snider creates a compelling and original world which will appeal to even the most fantasy-jaded readers. . . . It's one of those stories where you hold on tight and read on, hardly daring to breathe, as you follow her characters on their journey." — Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite

- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2014I did not read this book critically as some of the other reviewers did; I read it for pure enjoyment of the story. I love how the story develops carefully at first, then gains complexity and intensity as it progresses. You might think you know how it is going to end, but the creativity of the author will floor you. I highly recommend this book to anyone that appreciates books with complex characters, surprising twists, and a presentation of the battle between light and dark that is anything but black and white. Welcome to the mind of Sara C. Snider!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2014This cover, and then the first chapter, is what first sold me on this book.
What Snider really had going for her with this book was creativity and creatures. The adventure-style kind of plot, which I'm not always a fan of, was very enhanced by all the new encounters. Most of the creatures are new, at least, in my experience. As a reader, I really enjoyed going along for the ride. Cobbe was, hands down, my favorite person in this book! Her and her pig were an absolute delight, and a little gollum-esque, without the creep factor.
Another thing going for Snider was the world she created, and the way she used and categorized magic. It was a magical system that was new to me, and that kind of originality in fantasy is always refreshing to come across. I liked that the magic took physical concentration and mental strength from the wizards.
One of the main points of the plot was pretty apparent to me at the beginning (no spoilers here, don't worry) but then, when it came about at the end, still had a significant twist. So while I saw it coming, I also didn't see it coming, which almost acted as a double surprise. My suspicion is that Snider planned it that way all along, and probably knew that it would be obvious, so kind of leads the reader along an assumed path and surprises them with another one.
What I struggled with in this book is in regards to the Magi (or the wizards). It was about 50% of the way through the book before I really figured out the difference between the two of them. They both came off somewhat flat and bland, except Aldren, who eventually had some kind of personality, but it took awhile. They both came off as background features. As a result, I feel it slowed the plot somewhat, as I found myself wondering towards the end . . . 'ok, so when are they going to be important already?'
The only other issue I had with the book was the occasional passivity of the main character. I found myself spurring her on to greater action or motivation several times in the book. She didn't need to be an overwhelming presence, and there were times that she showed strength, but overall I wanted a bit more spunk from her. Regardless of this, Snider still made me sympathetic to her from the beginning, and I still rooted for her, and was curious to see what became of her.
I read this book in two days, looked forward to reading it, and plan to buy the next installment. Snider, as a writer, has strength in her words and positive world building skills.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2014OK, here we go with another epic fantasy/fairytale story...or not. I liked this book but it was slow going in quite a few places. It felt like the author had this really great story about this orphan girl (Emelyn) and her journey to find out about her family but then someone told her, hey add in some fantasy stuff, that's really big right now. If that makes sense-I just wish the story had stayed the super novel it could have been instead of the rather ...meh... fantasy it became. The magic parts were so convoluted and took so long to explain why it was magic that I didn't much care about how cool the magic parts actually were. So for the basic story, it was very well written and I liked the character of Emelyn as she develops throughout the book so I would say 3 stars and well worth reading; the fairytale parts were weak and have been done better elsewhere. I always say there is a reader for every book and I don't think I was a good match for this one. I received a copy of the book-the opinion is my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2015Emelyn was abandoned as a baby, raised by Miss Cook to be a servant until the festival came and set her on a journey to discover her family and the legacy that her mother had given her. Mistakes were made but that doesn't negate the tragedy of Iyen and how the magisters broke her mind trying to understand her power or how they broke her family.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2014The Thirteen Tower is a delightful must-read chalk full of magic and intrigue! It’s a story of self-discovery as the main character, Emelyn, goes from a humble servant to a confident young woman. The story is masterfully crafted and kept me guessing from chapter to chapter as I gobbled up the hints the author provided and kept me reading for more of the mystery to be revealed. The imagery and language the author used were major highlights for me: “…her dark hair trailing behind her like wild shadows” and “It was beautiful—a thing of ethereal splendor that made her want to weep.” I was won over by the culinary master named Cobbe making me wish I had a Cobbe of my own to prepare me all of the delicious meals described in the story! While the plot builds slowly as clues to the mystery of Emelyn’s past come to light, it all culminates in a whirlwind ending that answers all of the reader’s questions and sets up for an intriguing sequel that will bring to light more of Emelyn’s family heritage. I’m looking forward to reading the sequel as soon as it’s published but in the meantime, I want to read The Thirteen Tower over again now that I know who all of the mysterious characters really are. For a delightful read, I highly recommend this!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2023Emelyn is an orphan who was left on the doorstep of a house in a small village and raised by the cook, and although she doesn't have a horrible life, the monotony of her days has her wishing for some excitement. This book is a case study in being careful what you wish for. Emelyn gets her excitement, and much more.
I really enjoyed the world building here, as well as all the different creatures that Emelyn and her fellow travelers encountered along the way. They were very creatively written. The story itself was also very interesting and kept my attention all the way through. I look forward to reading book 2 to see where the story goes from here.
